Like a pagan god, Rolfe the Relentless rode into Castle Aelfgar to claim it as his prize--and Lady Alice as his bride. Lauded for his bravery in France, in England he was the hated enemy. Once ensconced in his new domain, Rolfe became determined to tame the Saxon beauty Ceidre, Alice's illegitimate sister, whose spirit and sensuality make him risk treason to have her--not ...more

So I read it.
People told me how I am either not going to like it or I am going to love it.
But the thing is...they told me if I do not like it it will be because of the adultery.
It's not that.
It's just that the book was...shallow.
But then again...this is a work done by Brenda Joyce.
She is something of a sado/maso thing for me.
I hate all of her books.
I hate her themes.
I hate her stupid villains that have no point what so ever and act as sane as a schizophrenic.
But I always go back to her.
(See this review with pictures here.)
O hai! Meet Ceidre. She is a witch, and in the next 420 pages, there are no end of people on hand to tell you so. It's Ceidre's misfortune to have a knack with herbal remedies and also a wandering eye, which twists the superstitious knickers of those around her. Her eye is conveniently referred to whenever she needs to be an object of distrust or have her self-esteem crushed. There is nothing about her finding it a bit hard to focus on things or losing her ba

There are times when one comes across a book that has received many a bad review, and while one perfectly understands the case most of them make against it, nevertheless, one cannot help but find it a compulsive read. Once in a while, along comes a historical romance that one loves, even despite oneself, while recognising its failures. 'The Conqueror' is one such book for me (perhaps the only one).

Part of the pleasure I derive, from my many re-reads of it is due to the fact that this book could

Whewwwwww! This one is quite intense (to put it lightly)! I am ashamed that I enjoyed is as much as I did. It is a book that for all intents and purposes should've been thrown out.....It's going on my KEEPER shelf instead:)

Both the hero and heroine are married to other people. The hero attempts to rape the heroine the first time they meet, and then finally suceeds at this violent act on her wedding night....(to another man). There is plenty of rough language, violent battles, an evil step-siste

CNF @ pg 265 or 63 %.

I try not to leave rating for a book I don't finish, but I'm so disgusted with what I think is my very first TSTL hero in a historical romance.

He was William the Bastard's most able and trusted military commander and helped Will of Normandy conquer England (in this book, at any rate, if not for real).

Willie was a badass. I'd don't think it at all far-fetched to expect Wills' top guy to NOT be a whipped, pathetic, wussy sap for first 60% of the book when he doesn't even d
I lingered between 4 & 5 stars because it's not that I don't have issues with this book. However, most of those issues are more cultural in nature than anything. You really have to try hard to put yourself into a world with an almost completely different set of moral standards and beliefs. And remember that RL, at the time, would have likely been even harsher than what Joyce shows us. Bottom line is, this is a page turner and I felt the love between Rolfe and Ciedre. A five* it will have to ...more

This book is definitely one of the best romances I've ever picked up and I truly couldn't put it down!

Ceidre is the heroine of the story and Brenda Joyce quickly has the reader feeling incredibly sorry for the beautiful, young (in modern day terms at least but it seems 22 is practically ANCIENT in medieval speak) woman, who has endured a living hell for the whole of her life because she has an apparent 'evil eye' which makes almost everyone she encounters believe her to be a witch, especially he

ETA: I am downgrading this review to 3 stars. I realized the issues i had with the book bothered me some more upon second skim-through. I also compared it to other medievals that I liked a lot more....and four stars didn't seem right. still a good read though. The original review is below.

Reading a bodice ripper - a medieval bodice ripper, no less - requires some mental preparation on my part. I have to be willing to suspend copious amounts of disbelief, and keep in mind that people (especially
This was a reread for me, I had read it years ago but really couldn't remember anything about it. I'm torn about the 4*, for the most part it was a 5* read for me there is only two things that I can think of that would have made me mark it down.

Ceidre (h) hasn't had an easy life, though she was the bastered daughter of the Lord of Aelfgar and he had always treated her well , she was born with a lazy eye and the people of Aelfgar had felt she was a witch. She has two older half brothers, Edwin a

After reading all the controversy about this book and other Historical Romance written in the late 1980's and early 90's I recently re-read this novel. This is a great read and gives the reader a glimpse of the harsh and sometimes cruel life, lived by most people of that time period. This novel takes place right after the Norman conquest of England in the 11th Century. The story gives the reader the feeling of chaos and danger in a time of great upheaval. Men and women both had to be tough to s

I am at the end of page 263 and I am stopping. Wow, I am completely disgusted. Pages like 263 have no place in a romance novel. I have to give Brenda Joyce credit for not following the same cookie cutter pattern because I was surprised around every turn (See spoilers), but this book has made me feel extremely icky throughout. I hate Rolfe and I would feel sorry for Ceidre if she weren't so pitifully stupid. I started this series on book 12 and loved it but this is an awful start to the series. I ...more

If you can get past the neanderthal bully with Flash-like super-speed who is always 'thickening' and look upon the man as a strong, powerful knight of the realm, then you'd be OK with this book. Unfortunately, I wasn't. When he wasn't trying to rape Ceidre, bad enough, he was constantly bullying her into being close to him, forcing her to do stuff she doesn't want and generally making his predator-like behavior disgusting. I was waiting, or rather hoping, she'd grab his sword and chop his willie ...more

Fairly decent 90's style historical romance bordering on being a bodice ripper.

Star rating lowered after discussion in The Historical Book Club after some very valid points brought up about the characterisation in this novel re weak hero.

The book felt real. I would guess back then humans very a brutal race. It is not exactly a romance book . It has rape, cheating . It also has intense feeling . It's a roller-coaster of emotions and not all of them good .

4 and 1/2 Stars - Rugged and Raw but a Medieval That Keeps You Turning Pages

This is book 1 of the two medieval stories in the de Warenne Dynasty series (The Promise of the Rose is the second)

It’s 1069 and William I has conquered England and is handing out land to his knights while still fighting the Danes and the Saxon rebels. Rolfe the Relentless claims Castle Aelfgar and weds the Lady Alice, a bitter woman who comes with the land, but the woman he wants is her illegitimate sister, Ceidre, who

Very entertaining fast paced bodice ripper style romance. The storyline is tight without any big holes and lot's of tension beginning to end. The characters were all pretty flat with straightforward motivations and not much complexity. Although I found the couple a good match and entertaining on page it is hard to connect with either of them (or any of the characters) in my opinion. I enjoyed it overall but my one big gripe is just that the ending is just too perfect. The author tried to take ca ...more
I'm sorry but my idea of reading a romance is to fall in love. I read only the 1st 17 pages, and I hate the supposed "hero" already. I then checked out others reviews, and saw exactly what I expected, people like me hatng this book because the hero is such an asshole. Bastards all over the place, cheating etc... ok this may have been the norm back then but I truly don't find reading about these things enjoyable. I am not a prude, and I do not care about violence or rape etc... what I do care abo ...more
i hate this story.. the heroine always cried n weep in almost every page.. yet she always being stubborn n also doesn't has the backbone as well,,
is she truly stupid? if she hate him, she hated with every single cells she had, but when she love, she just love blindly.. never think logically or question it..

n the hero.. i don't know if he always act as a stud? his passion roar every time he looked her.. it really amused me.. *roll*

well, i really think hard between one or two star.. but bcoz of th

Devlin sevmeyenler ...more

I know this book has received very good reviews but this book has a lot of cheating which was a big turn off. The plot and all the side drama was interesting hence the 2 star otherwise just for the romance this is a 1.5 star.
