Advent can be a good time to get into the habit of daily prayer, or a time to try something new to enrich it. This book is helpful for either goal. It is an easy to read book of daily devotionals for the Advent and Christmas season. Each day's section is divided into four sections: a reading from one of the writings of Henri Nouwen, a reading from the Bible, a prayer, and an "Advent Action", which is, as the name implies, a concrete action to accomplish that day, which relates to the theme of th ...more

This book was definitely a disappointment, but not because of Nouwen. Last year, Amy got my a book in the same series, but from Chesterton. That one was arranged very well and the selections from Chesterton were always related to the advent/christmas/epiphany season. This book rarely had selections that related to the season at all. They also did not seem to be related to the particular scripture for the day. The actions for the day also seemed extremely arbitrary. Most of the Nouwen quotes were ...more
The excerpts from Nouwen's writings are enhanced by the addition of prayers and "Advent actions" which are perfectly in keeping with Nouwen's style.
I underlined several passages to refer to again but, overall, this wasn't the best of Henri Nouwen. I think it may be because it was a compilation of his thoughts, edited by someone else, rather than a book he organized and wrote himself. Still, he offers insight into living a spiritual life in our every day world. I liked the shortness of the thoughts and quotes for each day of Advent.
Not what I expected. Didn't find it at all special for Advent. Just excerpts from Nouwen's works with a Bible passage, a prayer and an "advent action" which definitely was geared toward people of the Catholic faith. Glad I also did Max Lucado's Advent meditation which although they were short they were much more meaningful.

A clip of Nouwen mixed with a Redemptorist written prayer and idea for action - a simple way to engage the heart, priming the inner person toward the depths of Advent's meaning.

I read this sparingly this hear, a little now and then. It was the ideas for action that captivated me most this time around.

Great short devotional for the advent season. Will be reading it again next year. Includes a simple action to do every day.
Great book. I love Nouwen. I wish I had made time to read it more, but will definitely resurrect it next Advent.
This was hit or miss. I'm glad I did it, and I'm glad it's done.
