But working together so closely is starting to breakdown the wall of animosity betwen the pair and it's making Kierland rethink his strategy with Morgan - instead of fighting the attraction, Kierland's considering indulging it so that he can work Morgan out of his system once and for all - you can imagine how well that's going to work for him.

I was hesitant to continue this series because of the over the top yuckiness of the sadistic villains in the past books. But I love the Watchmen and I was dying to know what the deal was between Kierland and Morgan. So I bought Touch of Surrender and planned on skipping the chapters with the Casus, fortunately I didn't have to - no Casus on screen in this one, which made it so much easier to deal the aftermath of Kraven and Casus brutality - instead of the play by play in the moment sadism of the previous books.

If you are like me and have read all five books you are likely to find the first third of the book slow, but new readers will probably appreciate the info dump rehash of what has gone before in the series. I actually set the book down for a bit at this point, since I was also a bit irked at Kierland when I found out what he considered Morgan's BIG betrayal, just didn't seem so much a betrayal to me in light of his actions.

But I did pick it back up and Wow, Kierland and Morgan come together explosively - it's very very steamy. And the intense sensual connection pretty much continues that way for the rest of the book with brief interludes to look through all of the characters' baggage and to introduce more supporting players who just 'have to' get their own books - I definitely want to see more of Morgan's vampire 'ex' Ashe (and I want to Ashe find the woman who will make him 'burn') and the vamp Juliana as well as Ashe's absent brother both have potential - maybe Byrd will do a vamp trilogy next after Kellen's story which is up next.

Overall Touch of Surrender ended up light on story and heavy on the steamy stuff, but every once in a while I am perfectly happy to check out my brain and indulge - since if I was using my brain I'd have had to have been mad at Kierland for being such a major-jerk to Morgan for all those years and mad at Morgan as well for still loving Kierland after he treated her so shabbily - instead I just went with the flow. Comparing Touch of Surrender to the rest of the series, Kierland and Morgan win hands down for sensual intensity and the toning down of the villain material was a welcome relief. But heroine Olivia in Touch of Seduction beats out Morgan in the self-esteem department.

What are we looking for in a Paranormal Romance Novel? I contend that, if we are female, we are looking for a heroine with whom we can identify to some degree, and a hero a bit rough around the edges from baggage and/or secrets. When we add in the Paranormal, or in this case in equal parts Urban Fantasy, we are also looking for a way to suspend disbelief in what we don't tend to believe of our everyday world. Romance novels in general strive to take us away to a fantasy land we devise in concert with the author.

I found the world Rhiannon constructs in this series to be tightly constructed with enough reality mixed into the mix in the form of trains, actual European cities and car accidents. The fantasy and paranormal elements slip seamlessly into our world. This book was also tightly edited which, considering it was an uncorrected galley completely amazing these days. She is able to provide back story as necessary and naturally. It stands alone but would be even better read in series order.

Her characters are just what we want, Morgan is a strong, yet soft "Watchman;" with a stunted shifter nature and abilities due to generations of shifter species cross mating. She has some senses which are very keen, like hearing and an ability to track through the ingestion of blood. The blood ingestion in shifter species was new to me, but consistent throughout the book in its function and purpose. Kierland is a were wolf who was in love with Morgan but believed she allowed the Watchmen organization to order her to use sex to gain the cooperation of a potential source among some of the other, not so nice species in this world. Basically, he thinks she whored her self out for the organization.

Kierland was also her instructor as she trained to become a Watchman, so they got to know each other very well and because of the formal relationship nothing could happen and by the time it could his baggage and those bad feelings made it hard for them to even be in the same room. Then they are thrown in to a crucible ina mission and the danger makes a lot of things come out (a lot of things come off too).. So, a decade of unrequited love on her part and self-loathing lust on her part. Add that to his family baggage and, you got it, she is going to save him. Actually, this is a plot with which we are all familiar: it's about redemption through love.

The love-making scenes were hot and I marveled that Ms. Byrd could span such steamy sex over several pages. I do believe my Kindle was glowing red. These are seriously sizzling scenes of sex and seduction. Supporting characters include a villain holding people in nasty cells in a frosty castle, and a Vampire who was once Morgan's lover. He's the one Kierland thinks she had sex with on order from her superiors. And, guess what the mission they must go on includes this vampire! Talk about uncomfortable! More baggage, more misunderstandings, danger, and damage make every page of the book hum with anticipation. The book ends in a way that will make the next in the series mandatory.

Touch of Surrender gives you what you want from a romance novel and more! Recommended.

Ten years later there is a war waging and Morgan and Kierland must work together to got after Kierland's brother and rescue him from their enemy. Kier comes up with the idea that if they sexually ease their needs he can get her out of his system and focus on his brother but after he realizes it was like adding oil to the fire. He craves her more than ever and as each day passes by his true feelings come to a head but he may reveal them too late.

Morgan is a awesome female. She is strong, a great fighter, a trustworthy friend and won't back down when things get rough. I can't stand reading about whiny females but I thought she was right when it came to Keir. He was unfairly mean to her and formed his own negative views of her just to try and convince himself he wasn't still in love with her. I was actually frustrated with him. He is a deadly fighter, worthy leader, and and good friend and brother but a difficult person to love. Morgan and Kierland are enemies for two reasons. One, neither will just come out and spell exactly how they feel and two, Keirland fears that he will become the monster his father was towards Morgan. They both have wounds that only each other can heal but they are both two stubborn to be vulnerable. Reading about their relationship was frustrating, exciting, steamy, and really tugs at your emotions.

There is a war waging against evil straight out of hell and that will stop and nothing to conquer and rule all but to me the main focus of this book was the relationship between Morgan and Kierland. This is the 5th book in the Primal Instincts series and the first I've read so I know that the war is a bigger deal than what I may think it is, but I still enjoyed the book and the love story in it. Rhyannon Byrd's characters have a lot of depth with strong emotions that make you fall for them instantly, even the hard headed extremely sexy Lycans. I will definitely go back and read the first books in the series as well as future installments.

As danger gets closer, and as truths are revealed, Morgan and Keirland realize what they truly mean to each other. But will that discovery come too late or will it be just in time to keep them alive?

Morgan is a strong heroine who puts her life on the line to protect humanity. She stands her ground and fights to save those she loves. She's smart and extremely likable and when she and Keirland fight together they're the perfect team. When she verbally spars with Keirland sparks fly and you can't help but admire her.

Keirland oozes sex appeal and he truly loves Morgan, but fears he will hurt her. It takes time to work through that fear, but once he realizes certain truths, he quickly makes up for lost time. The romantic scenes between these two are hot and get progressively more intense as the danger escalates.

There are many great secondary characters that I look forward to seeing more of. Some sort of mystery surrounds the sexy vampire Ashe and his brother Gideon. Kellan, who's the carefree brother, becomes very intense in this story and the book's cliffhanger leaves him trapped and the reader wondering what will happen to him in the next book. This is a great book for fans of the paranormal genre and is easy to follow for those new to this series. This is one reader who's counting down the days until the next installment.(less)

This was my first Rhyannon Byrd novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The storyline was very easily picked up, and although this is part of a series, it can stand alone. I didn't feel like I missed anything in the series, considering this is the first book of the series I read. Morgan and Kierland were very strong characters and worked perfectly together not only in the bed, but in their battles to save Kierland's brother from evil. The first book I finished in 2012. =)
I was determined to finish "Touch of Surrender" by the 1st of the year and I'm glad I did because I have a stack of books that I need to read in the next month.
This was not my favorite book in the series at all and I think I'm being a little nice by giving this book 3 stars. The only thing I enjoyed about this book was Morgan, the Heroine in the story and Ashe. The Hero, Kierland, was pissing me off. He sounded like whiny B**** instead of a Man. Grrr!!!
I also felt like the story was dragging and didn't really have much action to it. It was mostly going back and forth to Morgan and Kierland's point of view. Morgan would complain about Kierland's mean attentions and Kierland would say how difficult it was to work with and be with Morgan.
There was a few times, I wanted to throw the book across the room. The only thing that got me interested was when Morgan's ex-lover, and close friend, Ashe came into the book. It was about time someone knocked some sense into Kierland and even Morgan.
I was upset the book didn't have much of a storyline to it also. It was focusing on Kellan's character, Kierland's brother and getting him back. I do love Kellan though and I'm looking forward to his book...but Kierland didn't even many fight scenes like the previous books did. He had more of a emotional drama instead of a physical one. He just didn't know what he wanted until he almost lost Morgan and even then, he was being a big pain in the ass...not seeing the BIG Picture. Gr!
I plan on reading the next book in the series and hopefully it will get me back to loving the series...but as of now...the only thing that saved this book was a Vampire who I wish I knew more about. I was even hoping Morgan would hook back up with him instead of Kierland.
I recommend this book who loves the series...and who actually adores Kierland in previous books...but for me...Kierland didn't live up to his potential like I thought he was. (less)

Kierland has been disturbed by his possessive feelings for Morgan for ten years. He wants her badly but he won't ever let himself have her. His is a long line of possessive and fiercely jealous males and what he fears the most is his already abundant and long standing jealously where Morgan is concerned. Afraid that he'd manage to fatally harm her, Kierland has instead built and maintained an image of Morgan as a biddable whore, one who'll do whatever the Consortium, the governing body that controls the Watchmen, says for her to do even if that means seducing and sleeping with the mark. By doing this, Kierland has managed to mentally keep Morgan at a distance, but that doesn't stop his seething emotions from boiling over when she's near. Deciding that he's going to rid Morgan of his system once and for all, he persuades her to a momentary arrangement of pleasure where he has sole sexual rights over her during their mission. Once the mission is over, so is the arrangement but it soon becomes fearsomely obvious to Kierland that a few days slaking his lust with Morgan won't even come close to scratching the surface of his need.

For ten years, Morgan has incurred the wrath of Kierland without knowing any of his reasons. Left with no choice, she's rationalized that it's the weakness of her heritage that makes him despise her like so many other shifters. With the tainted blood of many different species of shifters, Morgan is essentially a mutt as well as weak without the preternatural strength of pure blooded shifters like Kierland. Whatever the source of Kierland's hatred, its managed to break her heart, damaging her for any other man because in truth, no matter how obvious his dislike of her may be, Morgan has continued to love Kierland from the first moment she saw him at eighteen years of age. Now Kierland dangles his gorgeously ripped body before her and because Morgan has been dying for a taste for ten years, she gives in fast to his lustful demands knowing full well that her heart is destined to break all over again with the conclusion of their mission.

Despite Kierland's claiming of Morgan's body and her reassurances that it's him she wants, having her former lover, Ashe Granger, in the mix has Kierland riding the edge of destruction. With his thoughts poisoned by his own misconceptions of Morgan's fidelity, Kierland doesn't trust her claims feeling that the moment she gets the chance, she'll run into Ashe's arms like she did all those years ago. But as the Wastelands prove their reputation for danger, Kierland will have to make a decision whether or not to believe Morgan's love or lose her forever.

My Thoughts:

TOUCH OF SURRENDER is quite the emotional rollercoaster but I had a blast hopin' in and hanging on to what ultimately proved to be one hell of a steamy ride. Kierland is lust in the flesh and Rhyannon Byrd never lets you forget it. These males are just what the series title describes them as being - primal, all the way down to their sinful cores.

Morgan is one rockin' heroine. Confident, loyal and protective, she's a woman that makes fierce bonds with others easily but also never takes that ease for granted. She's very complex with her warrior exterior shielding a deep vulnerability that she shares with few others and it actually takes the length of the book to uncover all her secrets.

While Kierland's intense sexuality had me squirming, his self-imposed delusions where Morgan was concerned incurred it bit of my dislike. Burning hot then cold, he pulled my heroine through the emotional ringer on many occasions and while I wanted her to go toe to toe to with him in the those irritating instances, Morgan proved smarter than me. She knew how to handle Kierland even if at times she felt unsure. Her quiet dignity and determination forced Kierland into one heaping ball of uncertainty as he begins to question all his ill-conceived notions. And when he finally reaches the lowest of lows, he grovels his way back into both our hearts on hands and knees.

Finally, a little delightful warning, TOUCH OF SURRENDER is one piping hot romance that practically boarders on erotica. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself squirming from the heat as I settled in to read a deeply satisfying erotic and emotional journey. I highly recommend this author and series to paranormal romance lovers that crave their reads on the steamy side. Enjoy!(less)

I hope I don't miss anything.

I am a big fan of the Primal Instincts series, and right from the start I have noticed each subsequent book getting better, the world being more developed. This one is no exception. In Touch of Surrender, we get the story of Kierland Scott, the de-facto leader of the watchmen group. A Lycan, he has few weaknesses...except for one particular fellow watchman and shifter, Morgan. Being in close confines with her for the last month (as shown in the previous books) has pushed both man and beast to the edge of their control. Both wanting Morgan and hating her at the same time has taken its toll, and when rescuing his brother means he must depend on the one woman he wants to avoid, Kierland's control is tested.

Morgan knows that Keirland can barely tolerate being around her...what she doesn't know is why. Years before, when she was a training watchman and Keirland her instructor, she fell completely in love with him. More than just a passing crush, his seeming aloofness hurt more than she would ever admit. Even now, after a decade, it still does. But even though she cannot understand his contempt, she cannot stay away. He still attracts her like no other, and even through all of his anger she can sense he wants her too. But when a vampire from their past is the only one who can help save a captured Kellan, old wounds are reopened, and old feelings of betrayal come back to haunt them.

This one had a different feel to it that the previous four books in the series...but I can't quite put my finger on what it was. Perhaps it was that there was less of the all-evil Cassus doing their rape and murder thing (can't say that I missed them). Maybe it was that this book felt firmly like a continuation of the previous one (which is also a bonus), or that there was less of a team presence here. Whatever it was, it put a bit of a different spin on the story, and I liked it.

Kierland does not shine for a good part of this book. He is at times judgemental, demeaning, demanding and insulting to Morgan. But what redeems his is that we, the reader, know his pain and longing for a woman he feels he can never have. The Lycans don't share, and the beastly portion of Kierland sees Morgan as theirs. So her "betrayal" with another male cuts deep. The problem is Morgan knows none of this. All she understands is that the man she has loved for years holds her in nothing but contempt. Her confusion and hurt is real...but she still wants him in spite of herself. When they do finally come together, they are one fiery, passionate couple...determined to work their way through the attraction neither of them want but both of them are prisoner to. Even as they come to realize that there will be no ending to their craving for each other, the secrets from their past are still driving them apart.

I very much enjoyed this book...definitely another winner from Rhyannon Byrd. And, to me, this was a pivotal book in the series as well. The set up for Kellan's story is strong, and with the addition of the very interesting Vamps things are only going to get better. I loved Ashe. He caught my attention and stole every scene he was in. This new branch of the series is indeed promising. This one definitely left me wanting more, and now just a few months to wait for Kellan.

What can I say other than this book was a roller coaster. I had mixed feelings right from the start. I liked the characters, I hated the characters. Kierland Scott made me want to rip his head off. Alpha jerk that he was in the beginning it took me awhile to warm up to his sorry ass.
Morgan Cantrell was one of those women that makes you want to shake them. She loves until she self destructs. Wow is that really happening, yeah.
And then there is her sexy best friend ex-lover. That you wish she was...more

I've had this ARC for a while and never got around to reading it. Don't worry, I am kicking myself because this book should have been at the top of my TBR pile. It's hot, steamy, and has my favorite type of shifter in it, the oh so hot lycan.

After starting to read Touch of Surrender, I realize that I didn't know who the heck all the characters were or why everyone was so angry with each other.

I liked the story a lot. I was drawn to the characters. Keir was kind of a dumbass. When is it ok for someone else to decide someone else's future? Who did he think he was to do that? It never works out - evah! The tension and passion was hot between these two and I loved it.

After this edition, I kind of want to see if the Grangers will have stories and Raine...maybe she'd hookup with Ashe...and Spark amybe she'd hookup with Gideon? I'm looking forward to Chloe and Kell 's story.

Kierland and Morgan are both watchman and warriors. They share a past but Kierland will not admit that he has feelings for Morgan. He generally treats her bad trying to keep her away. He believes that Morgan is really in love with someone else. Then Morgan has to help Kierland search for his lost brother, Kellan. This throws them together and Kierland has to face the truth of his feelings for Morgan.

RB took a heroine who was very strong in other books and made her a bit weak in this one, IMO. The hero wasn't as heroic as he was in other books, either. Oh well, I guess you have to give your H/h flaws for their story or there wouldn't be anything for them to overcome. I enjoyed their journey anyway and was glad they got their HEA. This book, like the rest of the Primal Instinct series, was hot to scorching.

I am enjoying this series and I enjoyed this story too. I couldn't give it 4 stars b/c the hero Kierland was just too mean to the heroine throughout most of the book. It had fantastic sex scenes; these two were combustible together. It had a nice HEA ending. But, frankly, I found Ashe Granger a much more compelling character than Kierland. The vampire stole the show. I am not a big fan of the I-hate-you--------oh-now-that-I-know-I-misunderstood-you-I-finally-love-you-too story line. Still, folks...more

I just LOVED this book! He was stubborn, but so was she! It was so powerful finding out all she went through for him. Her friendship with Ashe was so heart-warming! The ending was intense and so passionate. Just a great book!
