Re-read 7/18/10 -- Man... I think I even liked this audiobook better the second time around. Pirrrrrrrratical fun. ;)
4.5/5 stars. This was my first novel by Johanna Lindsey, though I read a short-story of hers in an anthology before reading this book. As I listened to the audiobook, I was trying to determine why I was enjoying the book so much, despite numerous bodice-ripper type of clichés. I made myself a list to justify both my enjoyment and distaste.

Strong willed Georgina Anderson is determined to find the fiancé she lost four years earlier when he had been impressed into service by the British during the war of 1812. Doing so meant leaving the five older brothers who raised her, as well as her home in America, but she’ll be damned if she’d let a little thing like war, time, and distance get in between her and her plans for the future.
And find him she does. However her ‘fiancé’ is married and settled down- to someone else!- and he is baffle...more

One of the best romance novels ever.
I've read a number of books by J. Lindsey and my two favorites are this book and "A Loving Scoundrel." Both of them have a girl dressed as and pretending to be a boy. I loved the characters. Good plot. Good writing. Great fun.
CAUTION SPOILERS: Georgina was dressed as a boy and thought the captain (James) believed she was a boy. James knew she was really a girl but pretended he didn't know. It was great fun to watch James try to seduce the "boy". It didn't work...more

read James and Georgie's story for a 2nd time 3/31/2010
Read again November 2010
James is the the toughest of the Malory's. He was a gentleman pirate for about 10 years, during that time he wanted to spend time with his niece, Regina, so he nabbed her and took her on his ship. After returning her his brothers were angry and he didn't see them for some time afterwards.
Revisiting a tavern, he found he had a son, Jeremy. The kicker is that Jeremy looks just like his brother Anthony, he has their gyps...more

I really enjoyed Gentle Rogue. The image of Georgie disguised as a scrawny twelve year old cabin boy with a temper was so funny. She thought that Captain James Malory didn’t know who she was but James knew all right. She was the ‘wench’ disguised as a boy he’d been looking for since the day she kicked him in the shins and ran off after he carried her out of a Tavern. She’s been on his mind for days and it was just his luck that Georgie happened to step onto his ship.

I give Gentle Rogue a solid three stars.
I enjoyed the book and found the dialogue humorous and entertaining, but the plot was predicable and at time felt tedious. Just think “old school” romance and that pretty much sums up this book.
I highly advise reading this series in order. This was the third book in the "Malory Family" series. Because I did not read the previous two books, I was left feeling frustrated and confused during some of the conversations that were obviously past plot related.

This wasn't bad, and I liked it pretty much, but this series is not thrilling me as much as I thought it would. Plus, alas, it's another pirate romance - not my favorite... I swore I'd give this series another chance with Gentle Rogue, (which is my favorite of the series so far), but I found the whole Georgie as cabin boy and her succumbing to James' charms so easily (and fast) too contrived. Then, the whole dumb misunderstanding between James and Georgie later on was tedious and the plot became...more

About the Series:
This is your typical HR series. Wealthy & powerful English nobility at its finest; but this is not your typical family. Meet the Malorys. A beautiful, strong, determined, humorous & overall very enjoyable family. Beautiful people finding beautiful soul-mates sometimes quite begrudgingly. This family is full of stubborn & driven people that are lovely & hilarious. The men are sexy, strong, rake type alpha males; who are fun, carefree, witty & quite determined...more
Gentle Rogue has it all—pirates, American buccaneers, and a saucy cabin boy who is soon seduced by the sensuous James. Oh wait, perhaps I should mention that the saucy cabin boy is actually an American girl in disguise. Georgina Anderson sets sail on James’ boat, trying to get back to America before her family finds her missing. Of course James catches onto her ruse from the get-go. And the scenes of the virile captain flirting with his cabin boy are priceless. Eventually the reformed pirate sed...more
Alas, here is another occasion where I seem to be in the minority when it comes to ratings. I thought this was an "okay" read. There was nothing that particularly grabbed me about the story of Georgina and James. I did not root for them to become a couple. In fact, towards the end of the book I really didn't care. I found Georgina to be a confusing character -- a cross between a strong-will, strong-minded and determined woman and a naive woman, who didn't understand the basic of intimacy, even a...more

I have two issues with this book. First, how could a heroine raised on the shipping business whose father and five brothers were all ship captains even consider being snippy to her own captain when she's trying to pass for a (male) cabin boy? Second, there were too many repetive phrases. Only a quarter of the way through I felt if I heard one more "double damn" or "devil take it" I was going to smack somebody, specifically the rather awful narrator of the audio book. In addition, the author's ma...more
I loved this story of James Malory and Georgina Anderson, it was a lot of fun. This is Book 4 of a 9 part series on the Malory’s.
Georgina went to England to look for her fiancé who she had not seen in 6 years, she finds him married so decides to go back to America as soon as possible so her friend Mac chose a ship that was leaving in a couple of days and as they had no money he had signed them on a crew. Sigh...Is there no story plot out there that can actually surprise a reader? Insipid. Long. Repetitive. I didn't even have to finish it to guess the ending..Why is it always a matter of two lovers who WILL end up together anyway but who have to learn to accept each other throughout the whole story and bore us to death with their frivolous issues? And excuse me, is Georgie an absolute idiot or is it just me? She doesn't know what a physical attraction is? That's as primitive as a human feeling ca...more
It depicts the love-relationship between James Malory- a rake and a viscount and an American girl Georgina (shortened to Georgie). Georgina has been waiting for the past six years for her fiance who went to the British-American war (it might have another name but this is what I gathered) and never returned. With great difficulty, she manages to trace his location and attempts to go to England alone with her trusted servant Mac (I am not sure he is a servant). While searching for her fiance, she...more
I struggled with the heavy-handed exposition in this book, one of a series that I haven't read (The Malorys, I think). I appreciate having the information on who is who, but the delivery mechanism was clumsy and the exposition tended to bog down whole chapters.
I was not a fan of the heroine, Georgie, who was blindly willful, argumentative, proud and selfish. I did not understand either her constant self-pronouncements that she was easy-going like her brother Thomas, nor did I understand her brot...more

So many great reviews of this book makes me think that it's just me. Something was off and I never did connect with or believe in the love between James and Georgina.
It was ok but I didn't think it was nearly as good as the first two books. The first 9 chapters are pretty much a recap of the previous book and include a huge amount of cut and paste.
There was also just little things here and there that I didn't like. He's 36 but the way he refers to everyone you would think he was 76. The terms...more

James Malory and Georgina's story was much better than the last book with Roslyn/Anthony. The heroine was much more likeable. Did not like that the first 9 chapters rehashed the previous book. Seemed unbelievable that that Georgina could disguise her self as a boy; and that the captain would spend hours with him/her in that Cabin. At best she must have looked very feminine, and the book didn't describe her lowering her voice or making attempt to be man like....Oh well..literary license we are su...more
This was completely terrible, the writing was absurd, the characters were ridiculous, every cliche you can imagine was repeated twenty times over. He arches his eyebrow, she flushes crimson, he grins devilishly & etc., but I think that's kinda standard to this genre. Which is sad. It's like having a craving for something sweet - maybe a nice flaky bear-claw, but all that's available to you is a plastic-wrapped sticky sugarized-lard-filled Twinkie.
