Re-read 7/18/10 -- Man... I think I even liked this audiobook better the second time around. Pirrrrrrrratical fun. ;)

4.5/5 stars. This was my first novel by Johanna Lindsey, though I read a short-story of hers in an anthology before reading this book. As I listened to the audiobook, I was trying to determine why I was enjoying the book so much, despite numerous bodice-ripper type of clichés. I made myself a list to justify both my enjoyment and distaste.

To keep the game afoot he must pretend to all that she is what she says she is. But the game of seduction he plans backfires, and he finds himself just as trapped into their respective roles as she is. Passion explodes and all is revealed rather quickly- because this temperamental woman fascinates him to no end- but he’s got an even bigger stumbling block looming unaware ahead of him… Her brothers.

Written back in the days of big hair and Fabio covers, Johanna Lindsey defined the historical romance genre. Why have I clung to the romance genre all these years? Because of this book…and ones like it. Yes the plot is cheesy as all get out- but the characters and dialogue are as fresh today as they ever were.

Unfortunately Johanna Lindsey’s newer releases are decidedly lacking. Still, if you want to know why Lindsey’s name became legendary or why her books sold-and are still being sold- in the millions all over the world, read Gentle Rogue.

One of the best romance novels ever.

I've read a number of books by J. Lindsey and my two favorites are this book and "A Loving Scoundrel." Both of them have a girl dressed as and pretending to be a boy. I loved the characters. Good plot. Good writing. Great fun.

CAUTION SPOILERS: Georgina was dressed as a boy and thought the captain (James) believed she was a boy. James knew she was really a girl but pretended he didn't know. It was great fun to watch James try to seduce the "boy". It didn't work...more

James is the the toughest of the Malory's. He was a gentleman pirate for about 10 years, during that time he wanted to spend time with his niece, Regina, so he nabbed her and took her on his ship. After returning her his brothers were angry and he didn't see them for some time afterwards.

I really enjoyed Gentle Rogue. The image of Georgie disguised as a scrawny twelve year old cabin boy with a temper was so funny. She thought that Captain James Malory didn’t know who she was but James knew all right. She was the ‘wench’ disguised as a boy he’d been looking for since the day she kicked him in the shins and ran off after he carried her out of a Tavern. She’s been on his mind for days and it was just his luck that Georgie happened to step onto his ship.

James decides to play along with her charade until Georgie admits who she really is. Georgie gets so hot and nauseous having to be near James all day and all night. She was no idea that these are feelings of arousal so when James kisses her she let’s everything go. The truth is out and they spend the rest of their journey together in passion, nothing more. James has vowed he will never marry and Georgie knows that their time together will end as soon as they dock. Too bad Georgie’s already fallen in love!

When Georgie’s brothers come into the story it gets really exciting! Five strong captains who are very overprotective of their little sister! They are so angry when they find out Georgie traveled all the way to England, worked disguised as a cabin boy, shared a cabin with James, realize she’s been compromised and that she’s pregnant! They force James and Georgie to marry but they give James a hard time, get him beaten up in the process and even try to get him hanged. Though they forced the marriage they had no plans on letting them be together. James had such a hard time admitting he loved Georgie. He was such a Rogue, and he never had anything nice or sweet to say. He would always yell “Georgie is not leaving me” rather then tell her how he really felt. It wasn’t until he finally admitted that she couldn’t leave because he LOVED her that Georgie’s brothers finally let them be!

I loved the bantering between the brothers. They were just like Anthony and James. They were so funny! Also I was busting up that nobody in the Malory family believed that James actually married. Even when Georgie was right in front of them they thought that she must be his mistress… Very good book!

I give Gentle Rogue a solid three stars.

I enjoyed the book and found the dialogue humorous and entertaining, but the plot was predicable and at time felt tedious. Just think “old school” romance and that pretty much sums up this book.

I highly advise reading this series in order. This was the third book in the "Malory Family" series. Because I did not read the previous two books, I was left feeling frustrated and confused during some of the conversations that were obviously past plot related.

This wasn't bad, and I liked it pretty much, but this series is not thrilling me as much as I thought it would. Plus, alas, it's another pirate romance - not my favorite... I swore I'd give this series another chance with Gentle Rogue, (which is my favorite of the series so far), but I found the whole Georgie as cabin boy and her succumbing to James' charms so easily (and fast) too contrived. A fun, easy read with a "classic historical romance" feel. Loved the banter between Georgie and James. I wanted George to smack him several times throughout the story - that's my kind of romantic hero. Not a fan of the cover art, however.

First, how could a heroine raised on the shipping business whose father and five brothers were all ship captains even consider being snippy to her own captain when she's trying to pass for a (male) cabin boy? But unfortunately, the captain turns out to be James Malory whom she met at the tavern. She is afraid that he might recognize her and he does, but he pretends not to remember her. So begins their romance.......

Gentle Rogue is a typical pirate/historical romance. It is much like the stuff written by other historical romance writers. The heroine is a typical impulsive/adventurous heroine and the hero is very typical too. What makes this book even a little bit different is that at least Johanna Lindsey has drifted away from the typical high social position hero and weak heroine towards something less generic. A sea romance might be refreshing to those who are bored of generic modern/historical romances.

Pros- Interesting plot and characters
Well-written

Cons- The end really drags and teh beginning is too slow
Repetition of how blasted English aristocrats are (Even though I am not British, I found that excessive)

I struggled with the heavy-handed exposition in this book, one of a series that I haven't read (The Malorys, I think). I appreciate having the information on who is who, but the delivery mechanism was clumsy and the exposition tended to bog down whole chapters.

I was not a fan of the heroine, Georgie, who was blindly willful, argumentative, proud and selfish. I did not understand either her constant self-pronouncements that she was easy-going like her brother Thomas, nor did I understand her brothers' observation that she had changed, become willful and more determined because she was a determined, willful snot well before she met James. These were examples of the author telling us one thing but showing another, but this was not an Unreliable Narrator PoV technique.

What worked? Well, I loved the hero, James Malory. When Lindsey showed scenes of James, the story vibrated with passion. His possessiveness, black moods, repressed tender emotions and raw sexual energy jump out o the page. I loved the scenes of his rash reactions when his guard would temporarily slip and his true emotions could be seen. Favorite examples- knocking his chair over when George was on Drew's ship and when he intruded into the Anderson's party and basically handed them every reason to string him up.

I liked both extended families, too, which I don't always do. I surprised myself by not being put off by not one, but two sets of squabbling siblings--all boys at that. I dunno; I just liked them.

I enjoyed the set-up and the roadtrip aspect of the plot.

In other hands, this novel would have had more heartache infused into the story-- I would have really welcomed that because its absence was noticeable. After all, the heroine has reason(s) to believe that her husband did not love her, when she herself was so in love that she contemplated living the rest of her life alone and (spoiler stuff you'll not learn from me).

I would have liked the heroine to have had a couple alterations from the character as drawn. Also, this romance did not show the reason why these two ever got together (and stayed together) except for sex. I just did not see any relationship develop outside of the bed.

Overall, an enjoyable read with elements such as a hero it will be hard to forget which could have been great.(less)

I had not even realized it until I got quite far into the book this time, since the first time I read it, I had skipped over the beginning to get to the good parts. I did quite like it both times, although there were certain things I didn't care for as much.

Only thing is she and her companion Mac, who’s like a father to her, was robbed the first day in England, and have no money to get home. Deciding to take work on the first ship they can find, Georgie disguises herself as a young boy to work for the captain of the ship as the cabin boy. Unfortunately, it’s the ship of James Mallory, one of the English lords she and Mac had a run in with while looking for her fiancé. Hoping her disguise works, she pretends to be a 12-year old boy, not knowing the whole time James knows who she is from the start, but decides to have a little fun. It doesn’t last more than a week, before her secret gets out, thanks to her feeling of ‘sickness’ when she’s around him. For a month they keep the ruse up on the ship in view of everyone, but alone they are hot and passionate for each other. James, having never been married, has made it obvious he never wants to be, but wants to keep Georgie around, and decides he will ask her to be his mistress, something he’s not done in ages. Before he gets the chance, while they are docked in Jamaica, Georgie hops on her brother’s ship just as his is taking off and leaves without a goodbye. Convinced James would never want her on a permanent basis, and being in love with him, makes Georgie sad, but determined to raise their baby by herself, figuring she’ll never see James again. However, James is angry she never said goodbye and follows her back to Connecticut, where he walks into a ball her family is holding in honor of all five of her brothers being home at the same time, and thoroughly makes an ass of himself, and ruins Georgie’s reputation. After lots of fighting, passing out and cursing, Georgie’s brothers realize James is the infamous gentleman pirate ‘Hawk,’ and use that against him to force him to marry Georgie. Shortly after, her brothers lock him in the cellar, take control of his crew and ship and plan to have him tried and possibly hung for his crimes of piracy. Georgie devises a plan to break him out, only to be kidnapped back to England when he is released. So angry, she refuses to talk to him the whole way back, save for a conversation in which she tells him she is pregnant. He never mentions it again, and she’s convinced he’s not heard her, and is angry with herself for ever loving him. James takes every opportunity to let her know of his dislike of being leg-shackled and is often quite obtuse and limiting with his plans, or anything to do with himself, which drives Georgie into her anger even more. Ultimately Georgie’s brothers come to England to rescue her, but she insists she wants to stay with James, who will fight quite literally to get her back and finally lets her know that he loves her, making her the happiest girl in the world.

I have to confess, I didn’t really like James in the last book, he just rubbed me the wrong way, and I really was expecting to hate this book because I didn’t think I could handle his constant grating and teasing. But in this book I think it really worked, especially with Georgie and the plot line of her pretending to be a boy, the teasing worked well with trying to get her to slip up in her ruse. At first, it didn’t seem like there was much emotion to James, but as the book went on it became clear he is the sort to not display his feelings and in fact, hide them behind his constant ribbing of others. I like that by the time he confessed his love to George, as he called her, I totally believed it and was a relief to know he really felt that way.

I also came to love Georgie, almost from the beginning, I felt like she could walk right out of the book and into real life, so was so great. She’s fearless and holds her own, even against five brothers, James, his whole crew, and eventually the Mallory clan. She doesn’t need rescuing, and she doesn’t come across bitchy, the way I felt Rosalynn does, nor does she drown in the sea of men. The fact that she wasn’t afraid to confront her former fiancé, and held her head up high, that she was willing to work for her passage back home, that even though she was angry at James, she didn’t want to punish him unfairly, all things I love about Georgie!

So why only 4 stars? Well, a few things that bug me about this series, and in this book as well. I know some authors are accused of using formulas and key ideas they think every romance reader has to have in their book, and I don’t want to throw accusations around, but I think Lindsey may be one of those authors that could be lumped into that category. First off, I’ve only read 3 books of her so far, but I can already see some patterns, and ones that annoy me. The constant use of miscommunication or no communication between the hero and heroine, I realize it’s a popular theme in Regency-era romances, simply because it works, people weren’t suppose to air their dirty laundry. However, constantly using it as a plot device gets old, and annoying to me, I don’t like to see characters arguing simply because neither one of them wants to open their big mouths. Enough is enough already. Also, again I realize this was key of the time, and having lots of sex without birth control is bound to get the girl pregnant, but a baby in every story and the fact that all three of the books I’ve read so far, all the women hid the fact at first, or wish to keep it hidden, it’s a little old as well. Bad enough no one can admit they love each other until the end, and cause enough drama that way, let’s throw in a baby we can’t admit to either. If there’s a baby no one wants to let on to in the next Mallory book, I just might scream. Another thing, I get nicknames and common phrases, and that some people use the same phrases or nicknames over and over and over, but in a book where you get to edit it, and make it sound different and original and non-boring in conversations, this should not be overused, unless to stress a point. It seems every character has certain phrases they use over and over again, and with the limited conversation in books going on, please give me something original. With Reggie it’s ‘Famous!’ James calls every man he meets ‘pup.’ Rosalynn’s favorite curse is ‘Hell’s teeth,’ which is super annoying. Anthony calls James ‘old man’ all the damn time, you see where this is going? It’s just damn tiresome and annoying, or did I mention annoying already? And the last thing that has been bugging me about this series and Lindsey so far, everyone has to argue all the time. No one has a civilized conversation, or even just quiet brooding! Anthony and James’ constant ribbing is getting old, especially. I think it’s kind of lazy to keep using this as a way of communication between characters, just my opinion.

All being said, this is by far the best of the Mallory series so far, I hope it keeps getting better and better!

sungguh mengasyikkan bacanya.
awal baca ternyata ada part2 dari buku sebelumnya yaitu buku kedua,Tender Rebel, yang dijabarkan oleh si penulis dengan sudut pandang tokoh utama pada Gentle Rogue ini.

gak mau byk spoi ,tapi yg jelas, keluarga Malory,YOU ARE ROCK guyss..

So many great reviews of this book makes me think that it's just me. Something was off and I never did connect with or believe in the love between James and Georgina.

It was ok but I didn't think it was nearly as good as the first two books. The first 9 chapters are pretty much a recap of the previous book and include a huge amount of cut and paste.

There was also just little things here and there that I didn't like. He's 36 but the way he refers to everyone you would think he was 76. The terms...more

James Malory and Georgina's story was much better than the last book with Roslyn/Anthony. The heroine was much more likeable. Did not like that the first 9 chapters rehashed the previous book. Seemed unbelievable that that Georgina could disguise her self as a boy; and that the captain would spend hours with him/her in that Cabin. This was completely terrible, the writing was absurd, the characters were ridiculous, every cliche you can imagine was repeated twenty times over. He arches his eyebrow, she flushes crimson, he grins devilishly & etc., but I think that's kinda standard to this genre. Which is sad. It's like having a craving for something sweet - maybe a nice flaky bear-claw, but all that's available to you is a plastic-wrapped sticky sugarized-lard-filled Twinkie.

Georgina Anderson, Georgie, bungsu cantik dari enam bersaudara Anderson yg tidak menyukai hal hal yg berbau Inggris, berlayar dari Amerika ke Inggris hanya untuk menemui tunangannya. Georgina mengalami kekecewaan dan kemarahan ketika menemukan "Cameron" sang tunangan yg selama 6 tahun ini ditunggu dan dicari oleh Georgina dan telah melupakan Georgina dan bahkan sudah menikah dan memiliki 2 anak. Dalam kemarahan dan ketidaksabarannya Georgina meminta pendampingnya Mac untuk mengusahakan agar mereka berdua dapat kembali ke Amerika secepatnya dengan cara apapun. Dan jadilah Georgina dan Mac mendaftar di kapal Kapten James sebagai awak kapal dan pelayan kabin menuju Jamaika yg nantinya akan berusaha menemukan kapal salah satu milik Anderson untuk pulang ke Amerika.

Interaksi antara James dan George (panggilan dari James untuk Georgina) selalu bikin ketawa dan mendamba karena Georgina yg tidak suka dengan orang Inggris teutama para bangsawannya (padahal James ini seorang bangsawan yg punya embel embel gelar Viscount Ryding) dan keusilan James yg pura pura belum mengetahui penyamaran Georgina. Georgina yg tak sabaran dan ceplas ceplos tanpa sadar mengakui kalau dia "sakit" jika berdekatan dengan James (polos dan naif sekali) dan dijawab James kalau James tahu cara mengobatinya (nah... loh). James yg akhirnya tak tahan lagi akhirnya membongkar penyamaran dan merayu Georgina. Tentu saja Georgina tidak menolak karena Georgina suka perlakuan manis James.

James yg merasakan sesuatu yg berbeda pada Georgina berniat menjadikan Georgina sebagai wanita simpanan di setiba mereka di Jamaika. Menurut James itu suatu berkah bagi Georgina karena biasanya James tidak pernah mau terikat walau pun dengan wanita simpanan. Namun James dibuat terkejut dan marah saat tahu Georgina pindah kekapal lain (sebenarnya itu kapal saudara Georgina) yg menuju Amerika. Tak terima hal tersebut dengan alasan kalau Georgina belum berpamitan dengan dirinya, James mengejar sampai kerumah Georgina dan membuat keributan di pesta keluarga Anderson.

Di pesta, James mempermalukan Georgina didepan banyak orang dengan menyatakan kalo Georgina adalah pelayan kabinnya dan mereka berdua telah berbagi kamar yg sama. Seluruh kakak Georgina marah dan gerah dibuat James. Belum lagi ketahuan kalo james itu adalah Kapten Hawke yg pernah beberapa kali merompak armada kapal perusahaan Anderson. Jadilah James dan Georgina dinikahkan paksa. Dan James yg akan menerima hukuman sebagai pirate melarikan diri dengan membawa Georgina (dengan bantuan Georgina dan 2 Anderson muda) dengan paksa kembali ke Inggris.

Sekembalinya mereka ke Inggris terjadi kembali pertentangan antara James dan Anderson bersaudara terutama Warren yg cukup antipati terhadap James. James melarang Georgina berhubungan dengan kakak kakaknya. Namun akhirnya Georgina sadar kalau James yg selalu perperangai keras dan kasar terutama pada para Anderson bersaudara hanyalah kedok untuk mendapatkan dirinya (ternyata James ini memiliki harga diri yg tinggi dan lumayan takut kalau diejek oleh saudaranya Tony) dengan cara paksa. James juga akhirnya mengakui tindakannya yg memprovokasi para Anderson bersaudara agar memaksa James menikahi Georgina karena satu alasan yaitu James mencintai Georgina. Dan James rela melakukan gencatan senjata dengan Warren.(less)
