This is an astonishing novel. There is almost no plot - a man meets a tangential friend from childhood and goes out to her apartment in the suburbs of Paris for the afternoon - and yet every page is dazzling and riveting. Almost nothing of "import" happens (their conversations are relatively banal and baggy), but everything that happens, every detail, is made palpable and real through the intensity of its specificity.
