Yippee! Something new in the paranormal genre to read about--by yet another author who’s making the jump from small-press to mainstream publishing. Rhyannon Byrd’s first HQN Paranormal release is “Edge of Hunger” and after reading it, I’m just hungry for more.

So as a long time paranormal reader I'm pretty sure I've seen all the cliches, loved them and hated them. I've seen some really great original ideas, too. Usually the later fall in the category of preferred reading for me. I thought this book was sounded unique, but in fact it was disappointingly familiar and predictable.
The premise is interesting enough. A women with psychic ability, Molly, hears the voice of Ian's dead mother telling her to warn Ian that his loved ones are in danger. Ian has a...more

The idea that the book was based on was interesting and definitely unique, but there were a bunch of other problems in this book that made me give it a lower rating.
First of all, the characters were annoying. Ian was such an asshole. Literally I don't think that there were any redeeming qualities in him. He was rude, mean, stubborn, constantly angry, a bully, a user... again nothing good about him. Molly was a strange mix of being stubborn and weak-willed. She'd go from being persistent to want...more

Molly Stratton is psychic and she doesn’t want anyone to know, because when people found out they are reacting strange around her and treat her differently. But Elaine Buchanan is deceased and persisted that Molly listens to her. Elaine wants Molly to contact her son Ian and tell him about his destiny. Molly cannot ignore Elaine and pack her things and is going to pay a visit to this Ian Buchanan.

A generous 3 stars, more like 2.5- 2.75, but the concept was different, and I liked that. But my GOD, Ian? UGH. Seriously what a prick. If I were Molly, I would have slapped his face and said "dude, fine you don't wanna hear what I have to say, screw you, do what you want" and turned tail and left in a storm of dust, but alas, then we would have had no story to read. So, let's talk about Molly. Molly at first seemed to have spine, then she was a jelly fish, then turned back to spine, then flound...more
A mio parere: orrido. Bah. Dialoghi piatti, trama ridicola, approfondimento psicologico "questo sconosciuto".

Good universe, hot sex and I'm definitely reading book 2. I'm giving this 3 stars but with reservations.
Now it totally helped that I read Edge of Craving (prequel) before starting this one. If you can do it I'd definitely recommend it. Just treat the prequel as a very long prologue.
Why only 3 stars? Mostly because of the hero and the heroine. I didn't like them as individuals and I definitely did not like them as a couple. In fact, if I was friends with either, I would say run, far away or we ar...more

This month’s TBR Challenge read gave me a choice between romantic suspense and paranormal romance. I read a fair amount of suspense (romantic and otherwise) anyway, so I decided to dig into my little stack of romances with random creatures. I came up with Edge of Hunger by Rhyannon Byrd, a 2009 HQN release. This book is first in the ongoing Primal Instinct series. I found it an engaging but rather strange read. I enjoyed the steamy romance and the paranormal worldbuilding is a bit of a twist on...more
Usually, when I pick up a book, I commit myself to finishing it....no matter how godawful it is. However, there are a few times when that just simply is not possible. This book had to join the garbage along with the last installation of the Anita Blake novels. It is truly, truly terrible. This book had the feel that is was written by a premenstrual promiscuous teenager. The plot was the typical and could have been developed to a satisfactory extent by a decent author. If you like to read eight m...more
I was anxious to read something written by this author ... I've had one of her books on my wish list for a long time, though not a paranormal like this one.
The good news is, Byrd is a good writer, very descriptive and creative (no vampires and werewolves here but something ... other).
What ruined this book for me though, as far as it being an outstanding story, is the male lead. I did NOT like him, had a LOT of trouble finding any redeeming factors at all, until very near the end of the book wher...more

I was excited to see a 'mainstream' novel by Ms. Byrd because I am a big fan of her ebook romantica novels. Her books are always hot, but also interesting character-wise. She makes you care about the characters, and that is the main reason why I love some stories or tv shows or movies more than others. Because I fall in love with characters.
This book was pretty faced paced and hot from the get go. I was a little impatient to know more about both characters, but I see that more as the fact that I...more

I really enjoy this series and I like that is isn't quite the same as all the others. My only hesitation on this series is that is can be a little "dark" for some and doesn't have much in the humor dept to help relive the seriousness or heaviness of hte story. It is very well written and the characters are likeable (for the most part). The plot line is good and there is alot of room for the story to grow. I would recommend it but with a caution that if you don't like your paranormal romance (and...more
Okay Ladies and Gents,
This one was really good. I love Ian, even though he has the ability to jump off the page and make me feel as though he just slapped me instead of Molly! I read the 4th book in this installment first. It was awesome as well, which was why I decided to read the 1st three.
I saw a few reviews saying it's best to read the 1st 3 books first. I disagree, although the 4th had plenty going on, you still are able to follow the story whether you read them in order or not. That being...more

From the opening scene of Ian and Molly's verbal sparring I knew their subsequent encounters would give and get with just as much fire, and more!
Ian's personality is shaped by years of being told by his Mother that his familial history 'the darkness' will become him. He needs to be prepared, to know. Ian's family is fractured one day and as he is leaving he asks his siblings, Saige and Riley, are they coming with him.
Molly doesn't care if Ian thinks she's a bit whacked. S...more

I originally picked up this book thinking that it was another series about vampires. To be honest, even after reading the book, I still don't know what kind of creature the series is about. There seems to be some information lacking in the first book, which hopefully will be elaborated on in the second.
The second problem I have is the lack of character development in the book. While Molly, the heroine is fully developed, the male characters, especially Ian lack depth. All you see is Ian acting l...more

Gah, I hate writing bad reviews so I'll try and start of with something I like: The plot. It was different had so much that could be done with it...and yet it failed. This was mainly down to completely unlikable characters. Molly had no spine, basically allowing Ian to boss her around. Ian was an ass, that I could not appreciate at all.
Sure, it was hot but to be honest, many scenes could have been omitted as they were just not needed.

Hmmm....So this is my 4th book I have read by Rhyannon Byrd and I have enjoyed them all. She knows how to write an Alpha Male that you seriously want to yell at. You want to throttle Ian at times for what he does. Yet at the same time you can't help but like her alpha's either. Ian is no exception. He makes you upset with him while at the same time you want him. He is stubborn, withdrawn, and refuses to let anyone in. At the same time he just wants to keep our leading lady safe. He wants her but...more
Good grief, how much can one guy rasp? Every time he opened his friggin irritating mouth he rasped. Which sorta killed the book for me right along with whats-her-name, oh, Molly, constantly being described as soft and all her whispering. Between the rasping and the whispering I wanted to scream. How did I make it through to the end I'll never know, but I can speculate. I'm thinking it may have been the plot which was actually fairly decent. I have the next two but I may only read them if I have...more
Right then I picked this up during my weekly trudge around Asda (Walmart)but only because I vaguely remembered the authors name from GRs, and seemed to recall she got good reviews. However this is a Nocturne and altho I'd never read one before I had the impression this was going to be a PNR version of a Blaze, not much story , intimate scenes thrown in to spice to things and that's your lot. So how surprised was I to find this story was not like that at all, and infact you get a whole lot more,...more

Sheer and utter crap. This author is obviously an erotica writer trying to cross over. In te first third of the book, I was thinking, there is no way this belongs on a Walmart shelf. My problem, however, isn't necessarily with erotica. The first third was composed of basically two strangers either having sex, thinking about sex, or well, thinking about sex. Ok. But, there was no real plot. There was the promise of a plot, hint of a plot, but it never got into a plot. Molly was there to give a wa...more

Edge of Hunger is one of those books that I'm glad I read once for something new, but I probably won't read again or remember much about after I put it away.
The concept is different, introducing two new kinds of supernatural creatures in the epic struggle for good and evil, but it's not enough to make this book stand out. I never connected with the characters and often wondered why I should care about what's at stake for them. The only interesting character for me was Quinn, and he's not even in...more

Ian Buchanan is haunted by the darkness threatening to break through his formidable control. Nightmares plague him where fangs spring from his gums and blood cascades down his throat from the willing neck of a brunette gypsy. Terrified and soaked with sweat, Ian fears the dreams where he ceases to be human. But one little brown-eyed woman is about to make him face the darkness, whether he wants to or not.

This is a hard book to categorise. It's a 1st-in-series book so has to cater to world building, which it does fairly well. It introduces a new type of shifter/demons which it does fairly well. It has to introduce our Hero/Heroine and supporting characters which it does OK.
A very well written book but I really didn't like the Hero, Ian for much of the book. His whole life is one of running from his problems, don't get me wrong the problems are big, but his first thought is to run away.

If you like graphic, sometimes violent, sex scenes strung together with what is seemingly a secondary storyline then you'll like this book.
Don't get me wrong, this is a decent book but the numerous sex scenes overwhelm what could have been an promising and interesting story.
There are two other books in this series in which hopefully the story receives equal attention to the sex.
I'm all for a good sex scene but sometimes there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.

I enjoyed this book, but lord save me from stubborn ass men. This is the story of Ian and Molly, with Molly trying to convince Ian that he really does need her and that he needs to believe her when she tells him his dead mother is sending him messages thru her. But this is a thick headed male who wants Molly but doesn't believe he deserves her, so she has to fight for the both of them.
It was a good paced book and kept me interested thru to the end. Now on to the next book in the series.
