As you can tell by my 3/5 star review, I am in the middle on this book. It was a short read, but it felt more like I was reading a list and that does not appeal to me. There was some sensuality and that was pretty good; Barbara Fifield might look into a romance writing career. The concept of the story threw me a bit, but its easy to understand how Tyrell instituted himself so easily, people are gullible and want to believe what they want to believe. I did not like the fact that this book made Re More...

When I accepted this book for review, the summary provided sounded very exciting and engaging… but this book was strange. That’s really the only word I have for it. Weird and strange. Here’s why:

One—I felt out of place while I read this. I felt like I had been dumped into the middle of a book on the first page. There was no introduction to the characters, there were no descriptions, there was no explanation. And it didn’t work. Sometimes in a book, that’s ok, because it works with th More...

How would you react if Lucifer came to earth in the guise of a religious cult leader? Would you recognize him as such? Would you be drawn to him? Would you see through his glossy finish to the evil underneath? That's the dilemna that confronts Elsa Eldridge when Tyrell, a local new age spiritual leader comes to town.

I didn't see Lucifer Rising as much as a thriller as a suspense book mixed with a little bit of romance. The book certainly made me think about how easy it would be More...

A quick read, "Lucifer Rising" addresses the issue of cults and reincarnation. While at times hard to follow (especially in regards to reincarnation), I enjoyed the premise of the plot. I liked the idea of a hard hitting reporter beginning a story to expose (or at least research) a religious cult and then getting sucked into it.

I liked how fast this novel progressed, because it was kind of a "heavy" read it worked. Although sometimes it was such a quick read More...

Lucifer Rising by Barbara Fifield is a slim novella about the dangers and allures of cults. I received it in late 2009 for review and like so many books, the review slipped through the cracks. Although I read the book in April, I am only getting to the review more than a year after receiving the book.

The book begins in media res with Elsa having decided to join the cult run by the enigmatic but devilishly charming Tyrell. They quickly become lovers and nearly forgets her goal to infi More...

Though at times using sensitive topics, I rather enjoyed this book. I think we all can connect somehow to the characters in the story, whether personally or someone we know. In the end, I am feeling good that I read it. The only downside for me, was its length. It was not very long at all, and I think the story could have gone on. I hope the next tale Barbara brings is a little longer.
An entertaining book for the most part, and making it onto my recommendation list.
