One of Ms. Lindsey's better reads. I can't really put my finger on why I loved it. I just did. It has the alpha, protective hero and the "helpless" heroine. Not that helpless is good. It's not, really, but she was a city girl out of her element so I forgive her.

Since she’s too stubborn to take his advice- ie go home and get that fool idea out of her head- he agrees. Along the way she moves from being his burden (someone has to take care of the headstrong greenhorn), to his tormentor (the skin tight pants she inadvertently buys), his lover, to his greatest weakness. Meanwhile he must stay on the bloody path he had set for himself- avenge the slaughter of his mother and half sister.

She hated living with her selfish step mother, so when it seemed her father was not dead, Courtney Harte jumped at the only chance she had to getting there- riding along with the enigmatic Chandos- a man she just met. Even though he tries to frighten her off her mission, she still trusts him beyond all reason. Besides, he was beautiful, and she couldn’t keep her eyes off him. Then, despite looking the opposite the entire time, she discovers he’s not as uninterested as he appears. When he finally releases the full force of his passion, it frightens her but his confession that he wanted her undoes her. With much of her timid nature behind her, they give into the wild heat between them, but a wild heart is not easily tamed and Chandos knows more than anyone that loving means loss.

When they reach their destination, he leaves intending to never come back. In despair, Courtney tries to move on, as does he, only to find that is all but impossible. Especially when the ties forged on the trail refuse to let go- of either of them.

I love the old western romances that have the hero and heroine riding the open trail across the west, with only each other to survive and A Heart So Wild is probably my most favorite. I re-read it often and every time it’s just as passionate, just as engaging. For some reason, I’m always amazed at the delicious feeling in the pit of my stomach I get when Chandos gets all possessively protective of her. I’m amazed not because it happens, but because it happens with a story I know like the back of my hand- and one I’ve been reading over and over since my teenage years. That’s how much a woman likes to feel protected- even one who knows she can pretty much survive anything after all she's been through. Well, this woman anyway. Written in the 80's, trust me when I tell ya, it still has the magic.

Now that I think on it, perhaps A Heart So Wild is my favorite romance novel, period. If you know my reading habits, that’s saying something.

A Heart So Wild tells the tale of Courtney Harte, the only child of Dr. Edward Harte, who grows up insecure of the love of her father since the death of her mother at the tender age of six. When her father remarries for practical purposes to a woman who changes her colors overnight, Courtney withdraws more into herself than ever before, learning to hide how she feels deep inside. When Courtney survives an attack by the Indians, her life takes a turn for the worse with the disappearance of her father, leaving her solely dependent on her stepmother until she can make it out on her own.

Chandos is a man who is hellbent on getting revenge on those who had violated and killed the people closest to him. The past 4 years has all been about chasing leads and finding each and every single one of the men who had abused their power in the worst way possible and to make them pay for what they had done.

When Courtney finds evidence that her father might be alive, she doesn't hesitate in trying to acquire the services of the strong and silent gunslinger who makes her feel all funny on the insides, something that has never happened to Courtney before. Chandos would rather cut of his arm and feed it to the bears than let Courtney tag along on a journey that is ridden with hardship and danger, not to mention the number she does on his libido and other emotions just by existing. Chandos hides a secret that binds them together from 4 years back, a secret that could turn the adoration in the eyes of the woman who means more to him than he can admit into hatred and anger.

As both Chandos and Courtney travel the rough and tough journey towards their individual destinations, the desire that simmers between them escalates until it obliterates everything else and demands nothing less but their complete surrender. But Chandos is not a man who would give up his quest for revenge lightly and he would rather not subject Courtney to the wanderlust nature his life had taken form of for the last couple of years. Laced with humor, witty bantering and enough bad guys to keep the action going, A Heart So Wild is a romance that hits all the right spots and delivers quite well on all fronts.

I loved Courtney as a heroine whose sense of humor makes even the most tension wrought moments in the book seem less so. Chandos is indeed a swoon worthy hero whose way of calling Courtney "Cateyes" and "Kitten" certainly had me going totally weak at my knees. And I absolutely loved the way Courtney continued to give as good as she got from Chandos, though she loves him to the point of distraction, never letting Chandos walk all over her and her feelings for him. All in all, a quite well rounded tale that had me clamoring for more of Chandos and the brand of magic that only he and Courtney together seems to be able to make.

As ashamed as I am to admit this, I stopped reading, really reading, about two years ago. I read for work and I read for school, but I haven't engaged in pleasure reading in so long, I felt like a hypocrite any time I told one of my students to read, and read often. A Heart So Wild came as a recommendation from my fiancée two years ago and I finished it now in 2012. Now that I'm no longer teaching and in between jobs, I'm a reader again. I'm glad this was my first book back into the fold.

I like genre fiction, but my genre is usually sci-fi or horror. Romance was never my preferred genre, but my fiancée loves the genre and write romance books as well. A Heart So Wild, the story of Courtney Harte and her journey into the American West in the 1860s, is well written because it does something that all good genre fiction does. It both embraces the conventions of its genre while simultaneously pushing the boundaries, giving us glimpses into interesting characters and the world they inhabit.

This story is not just about Courtney, a girl orphaned by an Indian attack and left to be raised by a stepmother who didn't want her in the first place. It isn't even about her finding love with Chandos, a mysterious gunslinger with a past that is revealed to us in a very well-paced but organic way. It's a bildungsroman that shows how as Courtney goes from childhood to adulthood, her attitudes change so she becomes more independent. Her physical transition from civilization to the frontier parallels her growth as a character from a "polite" girl to a woman who can get things done. All the while, she never becomes cold or unfeeling in order to become "tough."

I like Johanna Lindsey's prose, but I loved the plotting of the story and the characters most of all. What is revealed about each character helps to move the story along and keeps things surprising and interesting. The main quest of the story, Courtney trying to find out if her father was alive and well by traveling through the frontier from Kansas to Texas, becomes secondary to Courtney's journey to become a woman and sort out her feelings for Chandos.

I recommend this book. You could probably finish it in a week. The writing is good, the pace is good, but you'll fall in love with the characters. Courtney grows up before your eyes and it's an awesome experience.

This was definitely a page-turner, I finished it in a day, and yet, even though, I had a few problems with it. I felt like Courtney went from a stuttering, crying, vomiting scaredy cat to having balls of steel way too quickly. I also couldn't figure out why she would fall in love with a man that showed her nothing almost but indifference and who she believed had genuinely used her. There wasn't too much to like about her unfortunately.

I have read this book many times over the years. I never used to be a big fan of the western romance but I enjoyed this much more than I used to.

Courtney is still a bit of a sap but I appreciate more now her personality and her inexperience in the west. She recognizes her limitations and doesn't stray into TSTL territory (I used to think she was just inept and annoying and a pushover). I love how she got into Chandos' heart without really knowing she was doing it.

I am coming to the realization that I really like JL's western romances. This series (pair of books, really), I read out of order, but it didn't really matter. It was highly satisfying.

The story takes place from Kansas to Texas (which made it even more enjoyable since I live in Texas and pass by Waco all the time). The beginning is tragic as we witness the rape and murder of a peaceful Comanche tribe. My heart was bleeding at this point. When our hero and the other men return to the camp to see...more I am coming to the realization that I really like JL's western romances. This series (pair of books, really), I read out of order, but it didn't really matter. It was highly satisfying.

The story takes place from Kansas to Texas (which made it even more enjoyable since I live in Texas and pass by Waco all the time). The beginning is tragic as we witness the rape and murder of a peaceful Comanche tribe. My heart was bleeding at this point. When our hero and the other men return to the camp to see the remains, they vow to avenge their loved ones, by killing the 15 men involved in the raid. Timid Courtney and her family had the misfortune to witness a violent Indian raid, but were sparred for their obvious involvement in the afforementioned raid. The connection between Chandos and Courtney begins here, but the real story happens 4 years later, when Courtney grows up to be a beautiful young woman and Chandos is a ruthless gunslinger. Separated from her father during the Indian raid 4 years ago, Courtney finds news that he is alive and well in Waco, Texas. She hires Chandos to be her escort and guide. What she doesn't expect is the bubbling attraction between them or the dark past that they somewhat share, that has shaped Chandos to who he is.

I must first say that Courtney is a very interesting heroine. Unlike most JL heroines, she is more than a little timid and started off as an ugly duckling. But later she grows into a superb heroine who is in control and has not lost her femininity. On the contrary, Chandos is a true wild man. He is untamed and usually very unfriendly (or antisocial), which even the heroine acknowledges and bemoans. But, we understand and sympathize him for the revenge plot because of the tragic history. Is he what people call, a gamma hero, because he personifies danger. I loved them both and they make a really good pair.

Additionally, I like the random bounty hunters and the ex-mistress that added to a lot of character building on Courtney's part. The plot appears to be really simple, but the interactions are not only compelling but they literally take me back to the time period.

I highly recommend this book, but I must warn everyone that is more intense than an usual JL book. The tragic beginning is very painful and Chandos isn't really a warm character. He's hawt, but very scary as a man. There are some love scenes that were borderline consensual rape, yet I was able to forgive that. The man is that compelling, a force of nature, really. (less)

Well, well, dua hari berturut-turut aku membaca karya JL, kok ga dapat feel-nya semua ya? Selalu ada yang kurang*sigh*

Di awal cerita aku pikir akan menemukan cerita yang setragis Comanche Moon, namun ternyata perkembangannya berbeda. Pertemuan pertama Chandos dan Courtney setelah kasus di masa lalu kurang greget. Saat membaca perjalanan keduanya mencari ayah Courtney pun rasanya ingin ku lompat saja ke akhir cerita. Boring :(

She decided that "God Sakes" (always double capitalized) was a good Western/Ladylike curse and that's what Courtney says. A LOT. rolls eyes. Until near the end she decides she can let slip an occasional "goddam"

Every once in a while (read: a lot), I get a hankering for plain old uncomplicated fluff. I'm not much for westerns, but a very good friend recommended this, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

And, meh. It's okay, but the heroine plays the damsel in distress just way too many times for me to enjoy it. Also, the word Chandos kept reminding of Nandos crossed with a churro, so. I dunno.

Fantastic! This is a really good book. It's about a girl that has to deal with her evil stepmom, and her dad is claimed to be "dead" untill she shes his picture in a news paper, and wants to travle across the plains to be with him. But of course it's to dangerous and this guy goes with her, and under the stars their love becomes inflamed! Oh it's a great book to read!

Johanna Lindsey is one of my "go-to" authors for a guaranteed good read, so I was excited for her back list to go digital. Despite having read most of her books, over the course of hmm . . . 20 years . . . her characters, plot, and writing stands the test of time.

Although A Heart So Wild isn't my favorite of her books, it was still a good read!

There are several books with the same plot such as this one. JL spins a very good tale though and has her own brand of magic that satisfies you after reading. A good book!

I really liked the book. Loved Chandos. My only disappointment in the book is that Chandos used the "GD" word too much. Other than that, this book is a favorite and a keeper
