The author of this book is a nice lady with whom I shared a book signing table several months ago. But as much as I wanted to like it, I just didn't. The writing was good, but the driving plot was too erotic for me. I prefer my romance with more finesses than I found in this book.

Bella won't be forced to be Volan's mate. He might be the pack's alpha male but she's chosen the male worthy of her love and loyalty. The trouble is that she believes Volan will kill Devlyn if the beta chooses to fight for her. Fleeing the pack of grays that took her in when her pack of red wolves was killed she lives a solo life in Oregon now. When she left them she was still very much a child in the werewolf world but one hundred and fifty years later she has come into her maturity and longs f...more

This book: 1 star
There are two kinds of paranormal romance books. You have Kim Harrison, Ilona Andrews, Faith Hunter and Kelley Armstrong that make up my favorite group: action packed with strong female characters that drive the series. They may have a romantic element but are more "action" than "romance."

Then you have the second group: fluffy, borderline book porn that have strong male leads and wishy-washy females that follow them. The second group has an obstacle to overcome...more

The only reason I gave this 2 stars instead of 1 is because I read book 5 of this series not knowing it was book 5 and really liked it. I thought since it was so good I should start with the first in the series. To all readers thinking the same: save yourself the time and Don't read this book. You won't miss anything by skipping the first book. If you insist on knowing what happened, I will summarize. Stupid girl werewolf likes a boy werewolf but the leader of the pack wants her. She is afraid d...more

I absolutely loved this book. I couldn't put it down from the time I started it to the end.
The story is about Bella. She is a female red wolf whose family died in a fire. She was saved by a gray wolf Devlyn. Bella is adopted into the gray wolves family and society.

Develyn is a beta gray wolf who saves Bella when she was a child. They grow up together playing and watching over each other as they grow up. Develyn feelings turn towards love as they grow older.

Bella has always loved Devlyn. But she...more

What worked for me:
*Lone wolf being forced back into the pack, and being too stubborn/alpha to come back like a good little puppy.
*The whole bittersweet "I love you but we can't be together" thing that lasted over 100 years.

What didn't work for me:
*Too much sex. Yes, you heard me. Too much sex. It seemed like once they got in bed that first time, that's ALL THEY DID for like 8 chapters or something. It was obnoxious.

*The neighbor was obnoxious, Henry or Harry or whateverhisname is was TOTALLY u...more

Yadkny’s Review

Bella is a red wolf shifter and a rare one at that. After a fire destroyed her home and killed her family, her saving grace came in the form of a gray wolf shifter by the name of Devlyn. They became instant friends and she was subsequently welcomed into the family the current Alpha, but her adoption into the gray wolf pack did not come without it's challenges. Repeated attempted rapes, the stepping down of the old Alpha leader, her best friend backing away from her, and now attemp...more

Mostly solving a mystery which dragged too much. Some unanswered questions at the end. I enjoyed the wolf fight scenes.

STORY BRIEF:
Bella is a red wolf in Colorado who was adopted into a pack of gray wolves after her pack was killed in a fire. The alpha male Volan wanted her as his mate and repeatedly tried to rape her. She loved beta male Devlin, but Volan would kill Devlin if Volan knew. So Bella ran away to avoid Volan and save Devlin. She has been living alone in Oregon until Henry captures h...more

When this first came out I wasn't much into werewolves. Or any other kind of Shifter either. Part of it was lack of caring about them and the other part was the irrational dislike I have taken towards canines of any breed. Maybe because I'm so horrifically allergic to them. At any rate I ignored this book in favor of other paranormals even though I was rather interested in it.

As my tastes have changed I've begun to reach out and look at books and authors I overlooked. Patricia Briggs for instanc...more

First my recap of the synopsis. Bella, a red wolf raised within a pack of grays caught the eye of the brutal Alpha who has decreed she will become his mate. Bella realizes she must leave the pack to save the life of the gray, Devlyn that once rescued her and she has grown to love. The re-united couple must overcome several obstacles before they can rejoin their pack. Each as dangerous as the last, including battling through the red wolf territory whose Alpha has also decided Bella is his mate; s...more

I've been wanting to try Terry Spear's series for a while now and I'm glad I finally did. I really liked Devlyn and Bella. They were so made for each other. The chemistry between them was sizzling. I also loved a few of the supporting characters like Argos, Chrissy and Henry! I didn't like the red's they met or Volan, Volan more so then the reds cause of what he tried to do to Bella when she was only a child still.
I did want to slap Bella a few times for not believing in Develyn like she should...more

Oh, guys. I don't like giving bad reviews. I feel that when I find a book that I don't connect with that the fault lies with me somehow. Especially when it's book about werewolves, which I have a particular fondness for. After finishing this book and jumping online to read some reviews, I really do think I'm in the minority here because there are plenty of good reviews out there for it. Unfortunately the book never grabbed me and I actually thought I wasn't going to be able to finish it at sever...more

My Thoughts...

Bella is on the run from the pack that took her in as a child, why? Volan, the grey wolf alpha, has his sights set on Bella to be his mate. Bella, a lone rare red wolf, didn’t appreciate the claim and escaped the pack, leaving her heart behind with another grey wolf, Devlyn.

This was decades ago, too many to count, werewolves age one year for every thirty. Now Bella is living in Washington State, working from home and carving out a very different life for herself as a lone wolf.

Didn't Quite Win My Heart

Orphaned as a child when her red lupus garou pack was slaughtered by hunters, Bella was rescued by young gray wolf Devlyn and taken in by his pack. She should have been safe, grown up cared for and treated well. For a while she was, until male alpha Volan took over as pack leader and started making her life hell. He wanted Bella as his mate, intended to make her his, even if he has to force their mating....by raping her when she's still a child.

I adored Bella and Devlyn. There were parts of this book I loved and parts that I wish had some work. The wolves were great and I loved that both of our leads were born werewolves, it was a nice change from the more common roles. I also enjoyed the fact that Bella and Devlyn had a long history. On the negative side I think the book could use some editing. There are a couple of times the characters will mention things as if for the first time when they already had a conversation about it prior. A...more

Since I've read these books out of order and book nine in the installment of this series was the first one I read, well let's say if I read this one first, I may of given it a higher vote for stars.

This book was okay in the sense that it has everything you want in a werewolf book, it's just not enough action. I found it kind of boring and nodding off while trying to read it. Book nine kepts me on my toes a lot more.

The plot in this book is pretty damn simplistic, the book is only made a wee bi...more

The characters were interesting but could use a little more development. The plot was okay, though I found it difficult to really connect with the storyline or the characters. I also find myself skimming and skipping quickly thru some of the sex scenes. . . and there were a lot of those.. .too much sex and not enuf story for my taste. This is the first book of this type (werewolf, shifter) that I have read and I just couldn't really get into it. This may not be a bad read to someone enjoying shi...more

Bad Bella! Yes, this whole story has gone to the dogs! I couldn't take another page of this book, so I ended up skimming the rest of the book. I have to say it really didn't get any better. Even the sex was boring with chapters and chapters of it to wade through to get to the story. I can easily overlook things that are unbelievable. I can read time travel, fairies, werewolves and vampires and enjoy all of them. Save yourself some time and move on to another book. Some say that her other books a...more

I gave up! I could not get through another page, I tried. I guess I could best summarize the book as amateurish and boring.

Main chick - I've already forgotten her name couldnt make up her damn mind, one minute she wants her true mate the next she wants a human. then she wants her mate again, but isnt willing to let him to fight for her. I mean come on chick. Your over a 100 years old and you are acting like a 13 year girl. I wanted to smack her every time she started whining. No thanks

I didn't have a problem with the plot. It was good enough, not brilliant or anything but it carried itself. It was everything else that was a little off. The characters, Bella and Devlyn, annoyed me. They were both so stubborn that it bordered on stupidity. And then there was the sexual undertone that never left - most of the time it was SO much more than just an undertone. It disturbed the entire book and made everything else seem secondary. The relationship between Bella and Devlyn also suffer...more

Torn between It Was OK and I Liked It, so I rounded up. It was a fairly fun read. Yes, it was predictable, and yes, half the drama was people sharing feelings but in their own head had good reasons not to admit them, which drives me insane, but it was well written and pretty steamy, so all in all not a bad book. If you make it past the frustration, hidden feelings, and I am touching you but we can't be together, then there is some pay off. I will read number 2 but I expect a little more than thi...more

I liked this book... It was a good intro to a series I think has the potential to be really great. I really liked Bella's character and the fact that she did what she had to do to get away from Volan. And although they're the wolf rules or whatever I didn't like the fact that the red wolves "Claimed" her all because she was in their territory. I really loved Devlyn's character. There was just something about him, probably that he was willing to fight for her, that I loved. All in all it was a re...more

"Heart of the Wolf" by Terry Spear. Book 1 in the Werewolf series.

It took me about 4-5 chapters to really start enjoying this book. I was a little confused at first, and I don't really even know why. At first, I didn't like the main heroine Bella. After a bit, she was OK. The hero, Devlyn (being a werewolf) is very alpha. His character was easier to like. Although I really enjoyed the chemestry between the two characters. They complement each other very nicely.

Overall, I enjoyed book. I will be...more
