My mother asked me to read this book before our family trip to Ukraine; at first I wasn't keen to read it and it felt more like something I had to read than was reading out of choice, but I'm really glad I have done so and enjoyed it much more than expected. This is an autobiography of a poor but educated east Ukrainian girl who experiences the famine induced by the Communist regime before being taken from her family during World War II to Germany.
