Author, historian, and educator William J. Bennett examines America's last two decades.

Twenty years ago, John McCain was serving his second year in the Senate, and Colin Powell had just been promoted to chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. There was no Fox News Channel, no "American Idol." Saddam Hussein and the Ayatollah Ruholla Khomeni ruled Iraq and Iran, r

A Century Turns is a great survey of the key historical events in the twenty years between the election of George H.W. Bush and the election of Barack Obama. Dr. Bennett touches on every major event and adds his personal experiences with the key players of the last twenty years in the footnotes. It is unbelievable to see how far this country has come from the successes of ending the reign of the Soviet Union and the Gulf War to the current problems facing the world as of 2008 that have yet to be...more

Bennett states that he didn't intend to write another book on history just yet, but the demand by teachers lead him to realize that it was needed since so many teachers and schools are using these books as their American History curriculum. This the third volume that Bennett writes about American history, trying to keep it as current and up-to-date as possible.

Bennett's book, A Book of Virtues, sits on my bookshelf. We used it ...more

With the wrath of right-wing media commentators clogging the airwaves – often times shouting rash talking points or firing up constituencies that form the basis of ad hoc groups like the Tea Party, it is refreshing to hear the thoughts and words of a mature, level-headed conservative like Bill Bennett.

Unlike many of his over-exhuberant counterparts (Hannity, Coulter, Palin, Limbaugh, etc.) CNN commentator and former Education Secretary Bennett approaches his output from a reasoned, m...more

William J. Bennett is an inspired human being in giving each of us the unbiased point of view in today's environment. Serviced under two Presidents Reagan and Bush administrations and has a wide view of domestic affairs. His views are reviewed by television, radio and newspapers across the globe.

A Century Turns takes us back to the course of history of The Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush presidency in America. A great book for every level of reader giving them a precise amount o...more

First things first. I absolutely loved America : The Last Best Hope. I recommend those books to anyone that wants to know the true "story of us." I appreciated that he ended volume 2 where he did, at Reagan's farewell. His reasoning was solid, which was that other events were to close to being current and not fairly viewed in an historical context. That being said, I am kind of neutral on this book.

I think my expectations were way too high for this book. The stories wer...more

I just recently finished reading William J. Bennett's book "A Century Turns, New Hopes, New Fears." Inside the pages of this boom the reader is afforded a very interesting and largely unbiased look at the past 20 years of American history from the eyes of a man who was intimately involved in that history. Beginning with the end of Ronald Reagan's presidency Bennett guides the reader through the policies, scandals, triumphs, and failures that shaped American history from 1988 to 2008. F...more

This is William Bennett's summary of the last twenty years and reading it was like seeing the nightly news pass before your eyes in only the amount of time it takes to finish the book. Much of it will be news you've heard before, but there were some stories only Bennett could tell.

I especially liked the "fly on the wall" accounts. How interesting to live a life where you talk politics while out on a run with the president of the United States! After finishing a run with Pr...more

I recently joined Booksneeze and this is the first book I chose to review. I am always interested to learn about the history and politics of other countries, so this was a perfect pick for me.

A Century Turns: New Hopes, New Fears deals with the last twenty years of American history. In this book, William J. Bennett writes about the events that shaped America as well as the rest of the world. From presidential elections, the fall of communism, the wars that America was involved in, th...more

I eagerly picked up A Century Turns to review all that has happened in the past two decades - nearly all of my adult life. Looking back twenty years - beginning when many of today's major figures were largely unknown, before the explosion in internet technologies, before the effects of terrorism on domestic soil - Bennett traces the chronology of major events and people that shaped who we are today. Written as the third in a trilogy of U.S. history books for high school students, Bennett necessa...more

A fast paced political history of the first decade of the 21st Century, written by an insider conservative Republican. A very fair history. It was interesting to re-live the amazingly challenging first decade of this new century. I can't believe we're already ten years past the turn of the century. I would recommend this book as an approachable political historical review of the last 10 years.
