Hercule Poirot's Christmas (Hercule Poirot #20)
I just finished reading Hercule Poirot's Christmas as a festive group buddy read. What a ride it was!! I love Agatha Christie , and this was my first time reading this work.
Think of a victim who wasn't a "nice" person, liked to control people, and had any number of people with reason to want him dead....
A family reunion with the victim gathering all of the guests (his family) for the first time in years to hear him discuss changing his will...

Guess Who's Coming For Christmas?
The family's all been invited to Gorston Hall for Christmas and the devilish and domineering "old coot" Simeon Lee has a trick up his sleeve plus two surprise guests to cause havoc and add to the fun until the big crash and then......the scream from the souls of hell......and then......
"Blood......so much blood......blood everywhere......fresh, wet, gleaming blood"......
Oh, this is a good one. Superintendent Sugden has his work cut out for him, but with...more
A monstrous life has been taken. And to sympathise for the departed, for the life lost, is nearly to ask too much of one. Yet justice would be of no actual value if not served equally. And perhaps the evil of the murderer surpasses only the evil of the victim.
This remains one of the most captivating stories that Agatha Christie has, in her career had to offer. The omnious begining and the unpredicta ...more
I read a lot of my mother’s Agatha Christie novels when I was a teenager. They’re what got me into reading crime fiction. However, my interest in Christie didn’t survive into adulthood and it’s been years since I’ve picked up a Hercule Poirot or a Miss Marple novel.
This particular work, the December 2012 read for the English Mysteries Club group, was probably not the best novel for me to choose as a way of going back to Agatha Christie. She must have written much, much better books. I don’t rem ...more
Elderly, wealthy Simon Lee has gathered his family around him for a Christmas reunion. Hardly a joyous celebration when the guests hear furniture being overturned, an inhuman scream and find Simon murdered in his locked room. Visiting a friend in the area, Hercule Poirot offers to assist in solving this case where everyone had reason to wish the old man dead.
Reading Christie is always a delight. Ther ...more

In another writer’s work – say, for example, Raymond Chandler’s – a scant description, a thin characterisation or a stretch of dialogue which bears virtually no resemblance to any conversation ever had between human beings, would immediately strike a duff ...more
Alternate title: Hercule Poirot's Christmas
English Mysteries Club Group Read
Not as good as some of the other Christie's I've read, but to the plus side it was a quick read and kept my interest. I guessed whodunnit 3/4 of the way through (which I rarely ever do). It seemed as though Christie slapped me in the face to make it obvious who it was, so much so that I second guessed myself that it could be that person. However, I didn't guess Howdunnit until the reveal.
What an absolute surprise though. A wonderful Christmas indeed!
So I love this novel because I was partially able to match the thought processes of the great Hercule Poirot.
Al final teni ...more

When multimillionaire Simeon Lee decides to invite his family to celebrate Christmas at his home, suspicions are aroused because Simeon is not the doting family man. Harry, the black sheep of the family, and Pilar, his granddaughter, whom none of them have met are also invited, which only heightens the suspicions of the other family members. It seems that Simeon is playing a deadly, sadistic game with his family members. An unexpected guest arrives, Stephen Farr, who is the son of Simeon Lee's p ...more
Christie as usual has made my week a confusion, as now all I will be thinking about is that murder and how Simeon Lee got killed by the most unexpected person. I mean, how does she even do this? She is defi ...more
#2 in my 2014 Christmas mystery reading, prompted quite unexpectedly by my reading of The Man With a Load of Mischief.
