Calliope Reapers Jones has another problem. After facing the betrayal of her older sister in the series first book, Calliope finds herself in a race against time to find the lost soul of an ancient Egyptian man. At stake: her freedom and soul - not to mention the lives of her younger sister and her father's assistant! But Callie is Death's daughter, and with that comes some responsibility, even if all she wants is a new pair of shoes...

I'm gonna say up front this was not my favorite book of the series so far. I thought it was a bit slow moving and that a lot of plot twists were used instead of character development. Calliope is still whining and not wanting to face what it means to be Death's daughter and caught up in the supernatural world. (Whining and denial are also a favorite of Anita Blake, which was one reason I disliked the last three or four books of that series. Well, and I'm not into furries.)

The fact that this book got published is an insult to all authors and readers who have come before. The tone is snide, selfish, snobbish, and rude. The complete and total massacre of the English language should shame the writer and the editor. This book was so bad that I threw it away instead of selling it to a used bookstore as no one else should be traumatized by it.

Started reading this on the plane on the way to (and from) The Florida Film Festival, where I saw Amber's new movie Drones and met her. She is AWESOME.

So, the writing did get a smidge better from the first book, and now that some of the characters are world are defined, it was easier to get into, but I'm still not very fond of it. It still reads like a teen book. Maybe it's supposed to. Benson writes that immortals age up until around 18-20, and then stop right around there. Regardless of how many more years Calliope's got on her, she certainly still acts like a teenager. Worse, actually, than most of the teens I know but about on par with wha

All of my complaints about Death's Daughter still stand, for the most part. I seriously wanted to throw the book across the room during the first few chapters, but once the plot kicked in, I began to enjoy it more. Although I began to notice new things I disliked, like the fact that all pop culture references are awkward and overexplained and I liked anyone who wasn't Calliope more than Calliope, just on principle. She's really not a compelling protagonist or a particularly strong one, and she e

Before buying this, read the first two pages. If phrases like "some weird supernatural version of Al-Anon" and "major, hard-core suckage" appeal to you, then by all means continue reading. If you are like me, and want to claw your eyes out after reading such nonsense, then please don't read this. It's mostly "ugh my life sucks, feel sorry for me, ooo look at that hawt guy over there, omg I want that purse." Disgusting. I've never seen so many italicized words in the

Cat's Claw is the second book in Amber Benson's Calliope Reaper-Jones series, and it was as good as the first book in the series. The book picks up with Callie finds herself having two unexpected visitors that end up leading her to her next adventure. Callie finds herself thrust into situations that continue to test her courage and loyalty to those she loves, and Benson does a great job at showing the growth of Callie from wanting to forget her family's supernatural place even going as far to

Calliope thought everything was squared away after rescuing her father and restoring the balance in the Afterlife. However, she still owes Cerberus a debt for borrowing his daughter and finds herself on a wild goose chase for an Egyptian architect who has somehow escaped death. Calliope discovers that she has bitten off more than she can chew and encounters unexpected enemies along the way.

Calliope “Calli” Reaper-Jones is trying to live a normal life in New York City, that includes a boring cubby job and hunting for the next sale at Barney’s, all of which Calli is perfectly content with. But Calli also happens to be daughter of the president at Death, Inc., who is also known as the Grim Reaper, and she’s next in line for the job.

Calliope Reaper-Jones is the Grim Reaper's daughter and she's having a bad weekend. She works at House and Yard as the Executive Assistant to the Vice President of Sales. Her boss, Hyacinth Stewart, is still pissed over Calliope's forced absence to save her dad, Death-Ceo and President of Death, INC., after he was kidnapped a month ago. Hy's so upset in fact, she's introduced Callie to the term "over-worked" making Calliope extremely tired, but she's not at all surprised by the punishm

This book was much better than the first one. I liked everything about it. The main character didn't go on as much or as annoyingly about designer clothes and shoes. I guess I just don't like that because I'm not a girly-girl. I mean I like Sex and the City when they do it but I like my supernatural stuff a little more supernaturall-ie. I can't wait to find out more about Callie and Daniel. I hope she puts in the next book when Callie introduces Jarvis to her boss. I think that'd be hilarious. I

I wanted to like this, not least because I accidentally bought it twice. I'm a big fan of Amber Benson's work in TV & independent movies, & I really enjoyed the Ghosts of Albion books she co-wrote with Christopher Golden. But I can't remember the last time I forced myself to keep reading something I hated for so long.

I gave this book 3.5 stars. I like the plot and the twists/turns were interesting, but Calliope's whining just grated on me. She comes from a very wealthy family, has some supernatural abilities, is immortal, has a family who loves her, a job (although it doesn't pay well) and all she does is complain. She goes into why if you walked in her shoes, you wouldn't think her life was so great, but it fell flat to me.

When I read the first book to this series, Death's Daughter, I will admit that I was fairly disappointed. Although the overall concept was decent enough, it never felt to me that the author was really comfortable writing as those characters. Being a fan of Amber Benson, I decided to give Cat's Claw a chance anyways. And I'm glad I did! Ms. Benson seems much more at home with the characters this time around, which leads to a much better flow in the overall story. It felt much more like Calli

The second book about Calliope Reaper-Jones is much like the first. Callie still tries to distant herself from her supernatural heritage but she gets pulled in none the less.
A friend called the writing in the books immature but I have to disagree, it is Callie herself who is immature and since the book is told in first person the writing gets that tone as well. I didn't mind it much in this and the last book but if there is a third one I do hope Callie grows up a bit.

Calliope goes through more dangerous adventures with her friends. She journeys to Purgatory, which takes them too many a frightening place. I enjoyed reading this book as it smoothly follows on from 'Death's Daughter'. There's some sexual content and innuendo, but is in keeping with Calliope's growth as a character.
The story has the ingredients of myths, religions and a time paradox. Which I loved.

I gave the first book of the serious a pretty heavy "meh." I'm going to go ahead and lighten up that meh an octave or so, but still retain the fleshy meh-ness of my response.
This book is not amazing. It is neither wildly entertaining nor emotionally engaging. But if you are ever really really bored on a rainy day and you like mythology, go for it. Egypt in particular is featured here, but there be no dragons.

Synopsis: Calliope Reaper-Jones is Death's Daughter. Calliope Reaper-Jones is back . . . sort of. Actually, she just wants her life to get back to normal, to do her stressful, fast-paced job, and live in the normal world, but of course that’s not going to happen. In Death’s Daughter, Calliope ended up owing the three-headed guardian of Hell, Cerberus, a favor, and now he wants to collect on that. After being forcefully summoned to stand before Cerberus, she is offered a deal: to find a an ancient Egyptian architect who has gone missing. She on

The second Death's Daughter book is out and Callie is back!
Calliope Reaper-Jones is the eponymous Death's Daughter in Amber Benson's second book of the series, Cat's Claw. Like the first one, Callie is tossed into another adventure. Starting with returning the adorable little hell hound Runt (Griselda) to Hell, or rather the North Gate where Runt's father, Cerberus, needs Callie More...

Amber Benson's series gets better and better with each book! In Cat's Claw, Callie Reaper-Jones has a debt she incurred in the previous book called in, which of course leads to another adventure through earth, hell, and ancient Egypt. We once again meet up with some previous characters from Death's Daughter including Jarvis, Clio, Daniel, and Kali, as well as her hellhound puppy Runt. Needless to say, there's a LOT going on in the book, and it's best read in one sitting so that one can be thorou

What is so special with Cal, is that she tries so hard to be like normal humans and what you don't realize is that her attitude is what makes her that way, so very human. I love her nonchalant way of dealing with her immortality and the life she must deal with in that realm. She's so down to earth that you got to love her and how this series is going. I can't wait to see what more trouble she can get herself into, not that she's even trying.

I love this series. The main character, Calliope, is so well written. She's strong, she's smart-but-not-too-smart, she's flawed but she knows it, she'd do anything to protect the folk she loves. She screws up hugely, but she always fixes it. I think she's a fabulous, realistic character. Plot-wise, I didn't love this book quite as much as the first one, Death's Daughter. I still loved it, though, and I am really hoping there is a 3rd book in the series.

The second book in the Death Daughter series. Loved it just as much as the first. Watching Callie progress from not wanting anything to do with her family to I'm going to protect my family with all I got is an amazing development between the first two books. Amber's quick wit shines through. The timing of events makes this book a fun read. You don't know what to expect next.

A little more paranormal romance and less urban fantasy than I remember the first book being, but still amusing and enjoyable. That the author is Amber Benson also means I'm willing to cut them a lot of slack and keep reading past where I would with other authors though.
