It's not always easy being a female warrior with a nickname like Annwyl the Bloody. Men tend to either cower in fear-a lot-or else salute. It's true that Annwyl has a knack for decapitating legions of her ruthless brother's soldiers without pausing for breath. But just once it would be nice to be able to really talk to a man, the way she can talk to Fearghus the Destroyer....more

Recommends it for: Anyone who wants a pet dragon to ride - literally and figuratively. ;D
It's so embarrassingly delightful when a book I've mentally marked as nothing but porn manages to completely stun and amaze me.

Make no mistake, Dragon Actually is mostly fictional porn. But it's also a sweet, funny, and lovable story about a grumpy alpha dragon and his vicious yet vulnerable mate. And since it's been ages since I've made a list-review, allow me to make one now.

Dragon Actually managed to catch me off-guard by:

1. Making me laugh-out-loud (for real) after every other scene, whic...more

GA Aiken is a big name in paranormal romances, both under this cognomen and also as Shelly Laurenston. This was my first time reading her, and I had a positive experience.

What I liked right away about this story was the nice flow of the narrative. I was in a big reading slump where it seemed like it was harder to read books and get sucked in, and I liked how easy it was to fall into the world of this book. Aiken has some very good humor, and not afraid to make it involve some physical interactio...more

This rating and review is based solely on the first story in the book, Dragon Actually and will be updated when I read the second story, Chains & Flames.

Dragon Actually, the first book in the Dragon Kin series, is my first G.A. Aiken/Shelly Laurenston read and so I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from this author. To be honest, I thought the first half of the story was OK. There was a lot of humor, but not much depth to the plot or characters at all and, truth be told, I don’t think th...more

Clearly I am a fool for waiting so long to start this series. The first book in the series is actually two stories in one. So here are my thoughts on each:

DRAGON ACTUALLY – 5 stars

Annwyl the Bloody is a warrior chick who simply does as she pleases. Though a mere human, she is a force, igniting passion and determination in her battalion as she leads them into possible death. Her greatest enemy is her own brother, Lorcan. A sadistic brother who gets off on suffering, Annwyl must do everything in h...more

Ohhh eeee! Grab a glass of water and sit down with "Dragon Actually" by GA Aiken (AKA Shelly Laurenston) and you'll laugh out loud when you're not fanning yourself. This book actually contains two related stories. I'm tagging this as erotica because of the frank descriptions and plethora of sex in the book. And boy is it good!

Annwyl the Bloody isn't really sure she likes her nickname. All she really wants to do is kill her brother the wacko, blood-thirsty king and get back to living without look...more

If I were to write a review in Annwyl's words, it would be this: Oi! This book is bloody brilliant!

Wow this book is a definite fave! Love Fearghus and Annwyll and their magical world of dragons and fierce battles. Not to mention the secondary characters are great too and I look forward to getting to know them better in the following books.

I haven't had a good laugh in a while and this book, had me giggling like an idiot! Superb!

I am soo disappointed with this book. It really is 2 short stories, or 1 almost-novel length story, and 1 short story.

I read the first, and refused to read anymore, so it's on the DNF shelf.

A warrior named Annwyl has spent the past 2 years trying to defeat her cruel evil brother, gaining her the nickname Annwyl the Bloody. She is almost killed in front of a dragon's lair...Fearghus the Destroyer, but he is fascinated by her, and as she heals, she falls for him. By day, a knight comes to her to...more

OK.. now I'm kicking myself for not reading this series earlier!

I really enjoy Shelley Laurenston aka G.A. Aiken's writing. This book did not disappoint.
I loved the 'time' or 'era' that this story takes place in. I like that Annwyl (The Bloody) is very 'crass' and has no etiquette whatsoever. She has been raised by men, had to fight like a man to survive, and has to kill her only brother in order to restore justice to her kingdom.
Fearghus (the Dragon) The Destroyer is also just as crass, and st...more

I saw this book in the bookstore and picked it up on a whim. I am so glad that I did. This book was hilarious! As I started reading it I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to get into it. Annwyl's personality kind of rubbed me the wrong way at first. She grew on me eventually though.

I thought Fearghus was pretty adorable. He tried so hard to be cranky and antisocial but couldn't get past the urge to hang out with Annwyl. I thought it was funny when he ended up being jealous of himself. He end...more

This is actually two stories. The first is about Fearghus and Annwyl. I had read the back-of-book summary and it sounded like a good story. Well, it could have been better.

Fearghus is a shape-shifting dragon who likes his solitude. Annwyl is an insane warrior chick who leads an army against her evil brother. They meet when the dragon saves the amazon from a group of her brother's soldiers. Normally he would eat her, but she'd shown herself to be very brave and he was intrigued.

I can't really sa...more

At first I wasn’t sure what to make of this book. The first few chapters felt like an assignment in a writing group but after I managed to work those out I enjoyed the rest of it.
But still I couldn’t put my finger on what was bothering me so. Only at the end of the first story (yes there are two. Read the description) I’ve realized what it is; I’m reading a romance! Now I know it sounds obvious, not an earth shuddering realization, but it was a shock to me.
I kept expecting the book to be what...more

I read this in the reissue Dragon Actually by G.A. Aiken.

Why did it take me sooo long to pick up this series? I know G.A. Aiken is Shelly Laurenston. And I LOVE HER! I think in a way it was the fact that I've never been big on dragons as the lead character in a paranormal romance. But whether it's the fact that I was wrong about dragons, or the fact that this series has a really interesting and fun storyline. Or that it was written by Ms. "Aiken". All I can say is that this book was excellent!

So after reading Dragon Bound a couple of months ago, I felt a bit lost. It had been ages since I had read a book as good as Dragon Bound and I felt that I had read most of the good established series that were out there. I decided to stick with dragons and I stumbled across Dragon Actually (the first in the Dragon Kin series) on Amazon and thought I would give it a go despite the tacky cover (you guys in the US really do get some tru...more

Dragon shape-shifters you say??? Not really my thing you think??? I was of the same opinion. You can't really cuddle up to a gigantic, scaly dragon, but I was completely surprised by how much I LOVED this story.

I am a big fan of G.A Aiken (aka Shelly Laurenston)'s writing style, seriously funny sarcastic humour, straight to the point and no time wasted on coma inducing descriptive garbage. The whole story is based on the characters and although you get the scope of what the scenery and...more

This series, this series...

I love Annwyl! Just LOVE her. She is so crazy, stubborn, snarky and fearless. She has no brain-to-mouth filter, something that I find very attractie to my heroines. She is such a badass and she keeps getting crazier as the books progress.

Fearghus is good as well. All hot and powerful but Annwyl steals the show IMO.

So far, this has been my favorite book of 2014. It's still January, but still. It was that good.

This book is actually two stories, the first about Annwyl the Bloody and Fearghus the Destroyer and the second about Fearghus' parent, Rhiannon the Queen, and Bercelak the Great. Both books are set in a different world, where dragons are alive and well, and are able to shift into humans.

I see from the other reviews that this seems to be a Love It or Hate It kind of book. I'm firmly in the Love It camp. I guess it depends on what you were expecting from the novel? I was personally hoping for nothing more than brain candy, and I certainly wasn't the least bit disappointed in that regard. I thought Dragon Actually was humorous and entertaining, and the bonus story Chains and Flames a wonderful add-on to the overall experience.

As a recent fan of Shelly Laurenston, I felt compelled to pick up the first of the Dragon Kin series written by G.A. Aiken, aka Laurenston. I'm so glad I did! Dragon Actually is the story of Annwyl the Bloody (but she hates when they call her that) and Fearghus the Destroyer (he's actually sort of fond of that). Annwyl's on a quest to kill the tyrannical leader of her people. He just happens to be her half-brother. And she's really good at fighting...just not quite good enough. Fearghus the drag...more

I have started this book over a dozen times. FINALLY the day has arrived that I am INTO it. Dragons, meh. Warrior women of ol', meh. But, this is kind of charming once you get 3 chapters into it. I am about 1/2 way through and in love.... with a scaly dragon more than his buff alter ego. Go figure!

Update: finished it and the story that followed. Yes. This is 2 stories. The first is a full length novel. I expected it to be a novella. The second one is a novella maybe a short story...

So I love dragons, I love romance, and I love feisty strong heroines. Throw in lots of hot sex, and I'm set. Mixing them all together however, apparently doesn't work. Certainly not with 'Dragon Actually'.

The book starts out well. Annwyl the Bloody is badly wounded and cornered by her enemies. She continues to fight fiercely, but is struck down. Just when she is about to be killed, she is rescued by a dragon. He nurses her back to health and the story goes downhill from there.

The writing isn't g...more

A very good read.

Fearghus the Destroyer is a grumpy, dominant, yet loveable dragon. Although his relationship with Annwyl can't be qualified as easy, he tricks her into falling for him and that was my favourite part. I wasn't so mad on the whole "everybody wants to kill his own family" but I guess it fits with the story. I'll be reading Book 2.

This edition was two books in one. The first is the actual story, of Fearghus the Destroyer and Annwyl the Bloody whereas the second one tells the story of Fearghus' parents. Since there are two stories in this book, I'll give my ratings separately for each.

I really did not think I would fall in love with this book. It caught me by suprise how much fun dragons can be. I am not a big fan of shifters, any kind but these dragons are fresh and they have a dynamic energry. They jump off the page. The dialog was snappy and bold. I wanted to mark so many quotes but I could not **asterick** them enough to post them. Orbitz gum could not clean up those dirty mouths. They also have very healthy sex drives that G A Aiken is not shy about detailing, detailing,...more

Re-read for Dragon Actually and Chains&Flames. Will add review for A Tale of Two Dragons

Not so crazy like Pride series by Shelly Laurenston. But still good nonetheless. I think for the first, this book is set on medieval era or maybe our era. But turn that its fantasy romance. With dragon. And bloodthirsty heroine! Wooohooo,a wet dream for fantasy geek like me!! (har, har!)

There were 2 stories in this book. The 2nd, "Chains & Flames", was actually a prequel about the Fearghus's parents. The author, G.A. Aiken also writes as Shelly Laurenston. I've read several of her shifter stories written under that name and I really liked them. I started reading this one and since it was written under a pseudonym that was new to me, I didn't know quite what to expect. I knew there were dragon shifters, but I wasn't quite prepared for the extent of the dragon society or the...more
