Shane was introduced in Giving Chase, where he pretty much acted like a jerk and failed to endear himself to me, but I knew he would have to change in this book if Ms. Dane had any intention of making him a likable hero. What I didn't expect to see was how abrupt his change was, so it was hard to believe it at first. Right from the start of this book, previously callous and relationship-shy Shane was turned into a gentle and caring man who never hesitated to pursue a serious relationship with Cassie. Huh? Where was the guy who was so afraid of being cheated again that he avoided getting emotionally involved with any woman who might endanger his heart? I know that romantic heroes are supposed to reform when they meet "the one", but there's usually some degree of inner struggle before they take the fall. This didn't happen with Shane, and I was disappointed because I had been wondering how the mighty would fall since I finished Giving Chase. Anyway, once I decided to "accept" Shane's new demeanor without trying to understand it, it was easy to fall in love with him and wish him the best luck in his pursuit of Cassie's love.

Cassie was a difficult heroine to me. I really liked her at first and I completely understood where she was coming from, but she grated on my nerves with her OTT attitude when it came to refusing any help, which she saw as "managing", in her life. Come on, Shane was not only her boyfriend but he was also a cop, and only a stupid woman would refuse his help! She also annoyed me with the way she kept comparing Shane's actions with her ex's. Yes, she did that all the time, and no matter how many times she said she wasn't doing it, her actions said otherwise. Okay, Shane had issues too and dumped them on her now and then, so their relationship was bound to have some bumps along the way. But why was he the one who always made the effort to patch it up? He took the blame for everything, and I didn't think that was right.

As for the plot, the romance was slow paced - as it should be, considering Cassie's history - and sweet, but there were some jarring "holes" in Cassie's plan to build herself a completely new identity and escape her ex-husband's pursuit. Her being in constant contact with her brother was an extremely easy way for her ex to track her down, and I was actually surprised to see how long it took until her crazy ex finally caught up with her. Maybe I've read too many romantic suspense novels and I've become too jaded to believe that "normal" people on the run do make mistakes like that, but Cassie and her brother weren't acting on their own and had the assistance of people who were - or should have been - experts on the subject.

As it happened before, Ms. Dane's writing wasn't exactly to my liking. I still can't put my finger on it, but I found myself skimming through some scenes involving a secondary character, as I felt that they didn't add much to the story. Regardless, reading this book wasn't a hardship at all, as Shane and Cassie were engaging characters and I was really rooting for their HEA.

All things considered, this was a nice and sweet read, but I still haven't joined the "Chase Brothers's wagon". Oh, I love all the hunkalicious Chase men and I want to marry them all, but there was something lacking in the 2 books I've read so far. Anyway, I intend to read the next 2 books in this series - not because I'm particularly hooked on it, but because I'm curious about Marc and Matt, the remaining Chase brothers who haven't found their HEA yet. Plus, I enjoy reading "feel good" stories now and then, even though the Chase family can be a bit too sweet sometimes.

Enjoyed this fairly light, easy-to-read, trade paperback set in the small, fictitious town of Petal, Georgia. This is the second in the Chase Brother's series and I recommend the books be read in order because the characters overlap.

It was nice reading about all the Chase family members, the eccentric Polly Chase (mom), brothers and a few new characters pop into this one. Taking Chase was a romantic suspense, with a police officer theme and passed through two Christmas time periods to boot!

What fun to see prickly Shane Chase find the woman who holds the key to his heart, the one he locked away years when Sandra did him wrong. Thing is Cassie is just as prickly as he is. More so, actually. That makes for lots of buttons pushed, arguments, sparks flying, and good sex (grin). Fantastic! I liked this second book in Lauren Dane's, Chase Brother series more than I liked the first... and I have heard they only get better, so I'm glad to have something to look forward to!

And can I just say how happy I am that Shane's not a jerk anymore?! I was really hating on him for a while there! But he definitely cleaned up his act pretty fast... and he was so SWEET with Cassie! I fell in love with their story... I will be reading this one over again that's for sure.

I loved this second installment of the Chase Brothers series. This one focuses on Shane, the gruff and moody town Sheriff and resident heartbreaker. I enjoyed this book and feel the writing is better than the first. It was definitely more serious. I liked Shane's and Cassie's characters. They had good chemistry throughout the book, but I wasn't as engaged in their love story as I'd hoped. Book 2 in the Chase Brothers series has convinced me I want to 1) move to Petal, Georgia and 2) get myself adopted by the Chase family. But since that is not going to happen I guess I'll just have to say Lauren Dane did her usual outstanding writing job: tight plot, engaging characters and colorfully detailed setting. Great read!

I have to say that I was not a huge Lauren Dane fan, but my friends that was until I read this series. Lauren Dane you ROCK!!!!

I love Shane and Cassie, and how there relationship grew despite the horrible tragedies that Cassie was forced to endure at the hand of an abusive ex. I really liked the way Shane was so good with Cassie and understood what she needed to feel safe. Although he was not my favorite brother, I really did like him and their love story.

I can't say anything bad about the writing, but the characters made me roll my eyes far too often.

You know what, Cassie, he wanted to do it NOT because he's controlling asshole, but because it's a polite thing to do when you are on a date with a woman. You didn't know that?). It's not just unfair to him, but insulting. And Shane, being an idiot in love he is, takes a blame even though he's a real gentleman. I understand that she has some serious emotional problems, she was tortured by her ex and all that stuff, but I really wanted to see a bit of sense in her. Well, I didn't.
Oh, and about Shane: Shane

is a romantic sheriff, who likes to say banal cheesy things about love and wants to kill Cassie's ex. He's one of the most ridiculous and unsexy big-bad-cop-and-alpha-man characters I've ever read about. Oh, did I mention that he likes to say cheesy things? Autor wants us to know what a tough sheriff he is. Riiiight... "I don't want your soul, I want your heart..." Yep, he talks like he's reading it from some Shakespeare's tragedy. Is it cute? I'm not sure.

Cassie's new friends

are eyerolling too. They are cardboard "good people", who love Cassie and care about her (a person who they know for a few weeks) like she's the best thing since sliced bread. They are clingy and tactless and bothersome (if some strangers invited themselves into MY flat, ignoring my obvious discomfort, and then demanded (not asked mind you) to tell them everything about my painful past I would tell them, very politely of course, to piss off) and can't imagine their existence without fussing all day with Cassie (because they don't have their own problems and she's a 5 year-old apparently).

I'm not talking about the plot (it's too boring) or humour (there is none) or sex (awwwwwkward). MC's don't have any chemistry between them. Anyway they are both uninteresting, so I don't care whether they have chemistry at all.

It's not that this book is a COMPLETE disaster (hey, look at the rating), it's just that I don't feel any compassion to any of the heroes nor any interest in the outcome of their relationship. I'm finished with this novel.(less)

So when Shane walks up and sees Cassie hugging on some other guy with her face in his neck, he flashes back to catching his now ex-fiance cheating with his now ex-best friend and he tells Cassie if she's going to cheat on him to at least do it indoors. It ended up only being her brother so everyone gets pissed at Shane and she ignores him for a week. So when Cassie has issues from her past, he has to be understanding and forgiving, even though she constantly compares him to her abusive ex-husband. Yet when he makes one statement to her in reference to his past, everyone acts like he's the devil. And then Cassie is always bitching that she doesn't like to be handled and for him not to make any decisions for her yet she sees his ex-fiance at the mall and she takes it upon herself to confront the woman and to talk to her about Shane. Another thing is they fought and broke up like, 3 times. The second time Shane told her they were going to fight a lot and they both promised that when they fought in the future that they would talk about it instead of running away and not talking for a week, yet when he saw her with her brother she once again ignored him for a week. And every time they broke up everyone attacked Shane because she wouldn't eat or sleep while he was gone yet she was the one that would break up with him and ignore him when he tried to contact her. I really want to give this 2 stars because this is making me even more irritated because I'm remembering how stupid and annoying Cassie is all over again but I liked the book for the most part. So after some time of having this book on my wish list, I decided to give this series a try.

The first novel in this series, "Giving Chase," I absolutely loved. I can immensely relate to the heroine, Maggie, for the way society just casted her aside, made her feel worthless, including her own family members. And worse of all the man she thought she didn't have a chance in HELL of being with, just basically dumps her A**, because of commitment issues--is pretty screwed up. But if that didn't happen we wouldn't be reading this book.

I'm really disappointed with this novel, I couldn't wait to read about Shane's story, yet it left me with a sour taste in my mouth. I yearned for more details from the interactions with the other Chase family members, for example what exactly happened during the Thanksgiving & Christmas holiday. What type of present did Shane give Cassie? I felt dead in the water, for me it was extremely difficult to read. I was about midway, and at times I made the connection between Shane & Cassie, and at others not really. Granted I don't know what it's like to be violated by a so-called husband, and left for dead by him as well, as Cassie had to endure. I understand completely being skittish around men, but the push & pull love bothers me immensely. Normally I try my best to stay away from novels like that, and I especially don't write reviews for books that didn't appeal to me either. But with this novel, I couldn't shut up and just continue with the series, without giving my opinion of it first. This review is based on just part of my completion of the book, I still have a dreaded twenty more pages to read.

Unfortunately with both novels, first & second there were a vast amount of grammatical & punctuation errors. I became annoyed at the fact, that if we (the reader) are to pay for a novel, at least make sure we can read it properly without these travesties--having us to guess which word to use.

Please don't misunderstand me, I know I'm not perfect. I make an enormous amount of errors when writing my reviews (I like to used a double-negatives), but NO ONE is paying any MONEY for them--besides your internet provided to make the internet assessable to you.

Ms. Dane I'm NOT going to give up on you or this series, I will definitely continue, hopefully Liv & Marc's story is better. I know some people won't agree with me, and I'm extremely sorry but I have to give this novel a 3 1/2 Star Rating! (less)

This story had the right amount of angst and drama. A heroine who suffered a violent past but is making strides to move past it and forward. I found myself liking the woman Cassie was striving to become. I felt that Shane was a bit too overbearing and that turned him into a dumbass more often than not. This was slightly better than the first book of the series but not that much. I think it had something to do with the time Ms. Dane took to develop her characters a bit better. Shane, though... I can't say that I've changed my mind about him even if the author worked hard at giving him some substance.

In Giving Chase, he was the commitment-phobe who treated Maggie horribly. His excuse? A bad experience with a cheating ex. What I don't understand was that this phobia simply evaporated with Cassie....more

I like this author enough and this particular family--the Chases--enough to read the entire series.

Cassie was the heroine in this book and she is a tortured and abused soul--an unlikely one since she comes from a rich and privileged background. I didn't enjoy this book as much as the previous. Although I understood (as much as a person can w/o actually experiencing something) the issues and insecurities the heroine had, she drove me nuts. I thought for sure it would be the hero that would annoy me, but nope. I actually adored him. The story itself was good and I liked visiting the town of Petal again, but I wasn't super impressed with this one. Even so, I can't wait to start the next.

While I find that I ADORE the Chase family, and OK all of the characters really, I was a little disappointed by this book. I love Shane Chase. He's sexy and a rogue who had his heart broken before. Everyone loves a tortured hero. In book 1 (which isn't really his book) we get to understand him, and what makes him tick. We find out he was cheated on by a fiance and he was so hurt by it that he now avoids any kind of situation where he might develop feelings for someone he's dating. OK. We get it....more

This one was kind of disappointing on two fronts. The first is that battered woman finding trust and love again is one of my favorite tropes (I think it's because my first ever romance was Public Secrets by Nora Roberts), so I really expected to love this book.
