Moon Called (Mercy Thompson #1)

Moon Called is still good.
What could be better than a Haiku review?
Well, other than a proper review, I guess...
The thing is, I did REALLY enjoy this book - it has a lot to recommend itself to readers with. Mercy is a nice character. She's not a complete badass but she's not a push over either.
There's a mystery - though the mystery was interesting it all came up kind of lame in the end.

After all the reviews I had read about this book, I though this series would be over the top. Everybody was giving 5 stars to this book, and for that very same reason I had really high expectations for it. Maybe that was the problem...
It wasn't a bad read, just a VERY slow one. The first half of the book was REALLY boring and slow-paced, it only described the heroine and her life. Around page 100 comes this hot-sexy-alpha wolf who makes you think that the book is finally going to turn out more in...more

Review from first time i read it, 04/25/11 to 04/27/11:
Mercy was awesome loved this book...
Mercy was really funny
Mercy was really fast (but not easy, takes a whole flipping book for a guy to get a kiss)
Mercy was pretty smart, for a girl ;)
Mercy wasn't completely helpless, she uh might rip your throat out with her teeth and watch you bleed to death (just sayin')
Mercy never even mentions her man eating vagina once in this whole book
Mercy also didn't shower once in this whole book and even she men...more

What a great addition to the urban fantasy genre. Mercy is a likeable and engaging protagonist. She doesn't come off as invincible and inhuman in her buttkicking abilities, yet at the same time, she is comfortable in her own skin and can hold her own.
The universe is interesting, much like the world we live in, save the addition of preternatural creatues such as werewolves, vampires, fae, and coyote shifters like Mercy, which seem quite rare.

Patricia Briggs has not only awakened her usual adult readers, she sent out wolf call to young adult readers who love their werewolves in this first installment of “The Mercy Thompson Series”, Mercedes “Mercy” Thompson the Volkswagen mechanic. Mercy is the mechanic with an uncanny ability to shift forms as easy as taking a breath and finding trouble or chaos with the next.

Enjoyed the sense of community, the relationships, and the vivid and varied characters. Mercy is totally likable, so I frame my review around her character traits, followed by a few quibbles and a note about how this series overlaps the spin-off series.
Vague Spoilers Ahoy!
Mercedes Athena Thompson / Mercy is 31 years old, a big hearted "walker" who, from birth, can shift easily and rapidly into a coyote. She is totally loyal to her friends and family (protecting half-dead Adam, rescuing Jessie,...more

Moon Called is a run of the mill Urban Fantasy pick. It was entertaining enough to keep my attention, but didn’t elicit any strong feelings of extreme like or dislike. Initially I thought I would totally dig it. The heroine, Mercy, is a tatted up car mechanic. Talk about an interesting angle. But despite Mercy’s uniqueness in this urban fantasy genre, where more often than not, the females are all articulate journalists or cops and yet complete bombshells, Mercy, with all her otherness, still ma...more
This book was a nice change of pace from many of the overly romantic and sexed up books I have read lately--but don't get me wrong, I like those too.
Of all the characters in the book, I can't say that I disliked any of them. They were all well developed and interesting. Mercy seemed so real. Many times in UF and PNR, the characters are these uber rich people with dreamy jobs and super model looks--Mercy is a mechanic and although it is implied that she is beautiful, that is not really talked abo...more

Review for the book March 2009:
I love the character Mercy Thompson. She is fiesty, sarcastic, knows how to pick her battles, and smart.
I really liked how much detail went into all the politics and relationships in all the different types of paranormal creatures. It was super detailed with out page long info-dump paragraphs, and relly helped deepen the plot.
The suspense was great, and for once I had trouble keeping up with the twists and turns which was a refreashing change from the usual predi...more

It pains me to say this (and I may lose my "guy" cred), but I'm a big fan of the urban-fantasy sub-genre. While I tend to lean more towards male protagonists (i.e. Butcher's Dresdan Files and Green's Nightside series), I still love me a good, tough female protagonist. That being said, I was hesitant to pick this one up because of the abysmal Harlequin like cover. In my opinion, many of the current crop of urban-fantasy covers look like they belong in the romance section. Why do I even know w...more

Moon Called is a promising start to a new urban fantasy series. Although it definitely starts out on a stronger note than, say, Magic Bites, I can't see it trumping Kate Daniels for my favorite UF Series anytime soon. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed my first foray into the world of Mercy Thompson. Mercy, a mechanic, is the type of protagonist you cannot help but love. Have you ever felt guilty about enjoying a book so much? Not in a guilty pleasure, “I’m embarrassed to admit I love this” kind of way, but in a “I feel like I’m cheating on other books when I read this” kind of way. Yes, for Mercy and I, it was insta-love. Not the hard-earned love that other UF series like Kate Daniels and October Daye enjoy–strait up, flat out, love at first page kind of love.

The story wasn't bad ~ but the writing was awful :( Early in the book, the word "I" started just about every sentence. The reader knows every move Mercedes Thompson makes... but we never learn her feelings or motivations for her actions. Frustrating to read a book written in the first person, and never actually get a feel of the protagonist's personality.

I find this book really hard to rate.
I like Briggs' writing style. Some people have described it as 'simple but effective' and I find that a fitting description.
Mercy Thompson is a very likable protagonist. She is sympathetic and not-pretentious. She is smart and courageous without trying to be the tough heroine.

After attempting to read "Moon Called" at least 5 times I am finally giving up. There is absolutely no chance I will ever read the sequels, so why bother?
I am a fan of urban fantasy and this novel is very highly rated by readers, so it is surprising that I disliked it so much. My expectations for urban fantasy are not huge: well developed lore, engaging paranormal mystery and one or two sexy supernatural hunks to swoon over. I don't care how formulaic it is, as long as it is written well.

This is one of my top favorite series. I re-read it at least once a year - often even more than that - and I'm always sucked in, always so incredibly emotionally invested in the characters and what happens to them.
I think, one of the best things about this book (and indeed anything I've read by Patricia Briggs) is the balance she maintains. Mercy's not perfect. No one is. Everyone makes some mistakes, everyone deals with them - and it's not always pretty, or easy.

Don't be alarmed! A 3 star rating in a UF for the first book is pretty normal for me. I know that this has absolutely no bearing on the rest of the series and fully expect that this rating will continue to rise with each subsequent book.

I absolutely recommend this one! Full of Werewolves, Vampires, and Shapeshifters, OH MY, AND a totally brilliant butt-kicking heroine who just happens to have a coyote alter ego- I did not want to put it down once I got into it!
The heroine, Mercy Thompson, is a walker- a shapeshifter of Native American descent- who wears her coyote skin as comfortably as her human form. It's difficult to review this one without spoiling it for those who haven't read it yet, but I'll attempt it.

This was a pleasant enough read, and I did like the main character, Mercy, the mechanic Skinwalker. My 3 star rating basically reflects my preference for the snarky and high octane paranormal urban fantasy style of Ilona Andrews. If you desire a more low key experience, you should consider trying this one. Might also help if you prefer dogs over cats.

My friend described this series as "small, action packed books of awesomeness" I'd have to agree... Don't let my star rating fool you, I really enjoyed this book. It's just at times, this new world that Briggs is introducing threw me for a loop. Not sure I really understand what Mercy is or that she does either. Looks like Mercy and I will make this discovery together.

I can make this out to be a very long and painful review, but I'm going to try and aim for the quick and painless instead.
There are two kinds of mystery/thriller books in my standard.
* One, which is plainly categorized as a "mystery/thriller" genre and even from beginning it begs for attention to find the one responsible for all the crime that happens in the book.
* Two, is the one that makes you feel like the third wheel. Out of the loop and the very last person to know what the heck is going...more

This is the first novel in Briggs' urban fantasy series about the coyote shapeshifter, Mercy Thompson. I had never read Briggs before, but did like her story in the new Were anthology ("On the Prowl"), so I thought I would give this series a try. The writing is excellent, and I can see why everyone adores Mercy Thompson and suggests this series to me. Mercy is a spunky character, very intelligent, and intuitive enough to know when to remain silent, which is rather unusual for the heroines in dar...more
This was a real disappontment :( after reading how everyone thought it was fantastic and was giving it five stars I got my hopes up. The story line itself had huge potential and there was also a slight love triangle going on with Sam and Adam but that is were the story was lacking.

I like you because you’re tough, but not invincible.

I love Mercy (Mercedes). The supernatural world seems so normal in this series. Mercy is fun - with just enough spunk...and everyone keeps their hormones in check....sort of. LOL

Mercedes AKA Mercy Thompson is a young woman / automechanic / shape shifter who was raised by a werewolf pack when her bio-mom deserted her. Since her shapeshifting comes of her bio dad's native american heritage, she's not a werewolf and despite her ability to assume coyote form, has never really fitted in.
When a young newly made werewolf stumbles into her life, her life gets complicated fast and soon she's juggling threats from werewolves, witches and vampires alike. Yet Mercy is used to look...more
