Wow! I thought I would just thumb through this book to look at the recipes, but I was hooked from the first page. I read and loved every word. I think you would have to had to read the entire Mitford series to enjoy it like I did. I did read all those books years ago and the Mitford Cookbook brought all the delightful stories back to this grateful reader. I had started to read Jan Karon's latest Father Tim book, In the Company of Others, and was so disappointed in it that I gave up. But after re...more
This is a lovely and fascinating cookbook, filled with some excellent recipes of very high caliber. I received it for my recent birthday after someone made an orange marmalade cake from it (and the Mitford series of books by the same author.)
I was impressed that even though the dishes themselves are recognizably American and non-fussy, they appear to have been collected with the utmost of care and concern. I don't buy many cookbooks any longer but this one is a welcome addition...if only for th...more

I just loved this cookbook. Having read all Jan Karon's books it was such a delight to receive this as a gift. My friend truly hit a high mark in my book when she found this book. I was just so happy. I also love to cook so this was a true gift to share these recipes with friends and family. So far the Orange Marmalade cake, Orange mandarin salad and the coconut cake have been great. I can't wait to make the biscuits, raspberry tea and cucumber salads next. I just know I have to make these for g...more
I actually have not made a tone of stuff from this book, but the biscuits are solid, as is the meatloaf. (And the peanut butter and Cheerios sandwich, obviously)
But I love to read this book when I can't sleep or have a cold or just want to occupy my mind without committing to a novel. The recipes are prefaced by an excerpt where the food is mentioned in the story. Having read the Mitford series, it makes me feel like I am visiting with friends, remembering the good ole' days.

I've always loved cookbooks that go along with book series. This is a good example of how this compilation can be accomplished successfully (I almost wrote "well done" instead and then laughed at my pun) One recipe that is absolutely spot on is Esther's Orange Marmalade Cake. I made it for several family occasions and it was a great hit. If you're a fan of the Mitford books, this is a good book to immerse yourself in its reality.
If you loved the Father Tim books and you love to cook, this is a great book! The recipes are traditional Southern so if you're trying to eat in a more wholesome way, you'll need to experiment with whole grain flours and whole butters, etc. The one thing it didn't have was Cynthia's secret for crisp french fries - although, did she ever really settle on a favorite method?
This is my FAVORITE cookbook and after having read the Mitford books it was such an experience to read an excerpt from this series and have it followed by a recipe or thoughts from the author about how food conects us - through memories and through current experiences.
My favorite recipes from this book are the Lemon Rosemary Roasted Chicken & the Mac & Cheese.

I was a little disappointed in this book. Some of the recipes look good, but there aren't enough photos. I like a little visual stimulation to get the salivation going!!! Still, I am excited to try: Creamy Lemon Pie, Rays Barbecue Ribs, Cynthia's Roasted Potatoes with Rosemary, Cynthia's Vanilla Muffins, Harley's Brownies, and Emma's Fudge. :)
All the recipes in the book are marvellous. We especially like Puny's Potato Salad which is a big hit at any potluck you attend. I do think it is because of the bacon in it. Hush, would it be Southern if bacon wasn't in it? We also love the chicken salad, Father Tim's ham, and the baked apple recipe.
I'm not much of a cook but I want to cook everything in here or at least imagine doing so. If you are a fan of Karon's books, you'll appreciate the recipe & pic of the famous Orange Marmalade Cake. There are many other recipes from her books as well accompanied by her writing. Would make a great gift.

Gave this as a gift to my best friend. It's full of wisdom, stories, and wonderful recipes from the books.
Many decent recipes. Excerpts from her books are included in various places as well.
A lovely, lovely book. One to be savored and read over and over. Wonderful insights, stories and recipes. Even if you have never read one of Jan Karon's delightful "Mitford" books, you will greatly enjoy this "more than just a cookbook". Lovingly written, with beautiful photos and illustrations, this book offers sustenance for mind, body, and spirit. You will savor the flavor of recipes like "Father Tim's Beef Tenderloin with Mustard Horseradish Sauce", "Cynthia's Deep-Dish Blackberry Pie", "Emm...more
