I usually pass on books involving conspiracy theories and presidential politics - too much American cheerleading is hard to swallow. This audiobook caught my eye while browsing through the library. It got some audiobook award, and the author has a background that looked promising. Immediately caught up in it. Truly engaged with the main character and his supporting cast, even the domestic troubles sub-plots which I usually hurry past. Sure, the big coincidences and convenient connections were a ...more

This book disappointed me. Not because it wasn't good, but just because it wasn't as good as The Program. That one was dark, disturbing, and truly frightening. This one was just your basic political thriller, with buried scandals that people will kill to protect. It was pretty good, with enough twistiness to keep you on your toes a bit, but was ultimately forgettable. I might try another of his books, but if it's more like this, that'll probably be it. I think, though, that I'll go with The Kill Clause...more
The story opens on our main character, Nick, as he is essentially kidnapped by a SWAT team in the name of national security. A man he has never met has infiltrated a nuclear plant, and insists he will speak only to Nick. It turns out he may have information about the unsolved murder of Nick's stepfather seventeen years earlier, a murder Nick blames himself for allowing to happen. But the terrorist is killed after telling Nick only part of the puzzle, and Nick decides it is finally time that he...more

This implausible novel is about a man named Nick who is woken out of bed one night by secret service agents who tell him that a man is threatening to blow up a nuclear power plant and Nick is the only person he'll negotiate with. After this event, the narrative flashed back to Nick's relationship with his step-father, a secret service agent whose death Nick feels responsible for. Connecting the two, Nick goes on the run from an elaborate conspiracy involving shadowy government operatives, dirty ...more
'Trust No One' is a fun, fastpaced thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire read.

Trust No One has a terrific start and you can see everything play out like an action movie in your head. There are a lot of ingenious twists and turns involving characters whose motives and allegiances are unclear. I think the back story of the protagonist, the son of a murdered secret service agent, is perhaps the best part of the book. The action and story telling are very competent, but involving presidential candidates and skeletons in their closet seems pretty contrived to me -- even tho...more
I had never heard of Hurwitz before I found this book on sale in a local bookshop. The price was really good and Lee Child recommmended it so I gave it a chance and lucky I did.
This a very good book that starts with a bang and then never lets the pace drop during the entire story. The pace is hectic but the characters are fleshed out and you get feelings for them and really want them to succeed. Nick Horrigan is a man with a secret: when he was 17, he made a mistake that resulted in his stepfather's murder and his estrangement from his mom. He's been trying to lie low and blend in ever since. But now, seventeen years later, he's pulled out of his apartment by the Secret Service, who say a terrorist has a bomb in a nuclear facility and will only talk to Nick. Nick is then pulled into the world of secrets and learns that he may finally have answers to what ruined his family's life so m...more
This was a great book! 12 years ago when Nick was 17, his life was torn apart, when he came home and found his step-father dying of a gunshot. Nick started questioning his mother and others about what occurred that night. Not long after his questions start, a stranger in the night puts Nick in handcuffs and threatens to put him in jail for the murder of his step-father and harm his mother if he doesn't disappear and stop asking questions.

WE KNOW is the second book from Gregg Hurwitz, which was released in 2008. This is a review very much in the spirit of better late than never, as this is a book that is just the thing for fans of big, over-the-top, clever, pitch-perfect thrillers.
You really have to remember that WE KNOW is a thriller. The central character Nick Horrigan obviously has a secret which is obviously going to be slowly revealed as the book progresses (well it becomes obvious after a seat of the pants ope...more

A good read. A page turner, I read it in a day and half. I liked the simple, direct prose. It's a crime/thriller (I've been on that kick lately.) The plot may be far out there (unlikely) but that didn't bother me. Hey, what with all the conspiracist theories floating around ... who can say. Is the hero/crime stopper unlikely? Yes - he's a paranoid, drop out, who gets sucked into presidential politics, lies, murder, and cover-ups. He out wits the pols, the secret service, the cops. Good stuff.
Nick Harrigan is a normal 17 year old boy living with his mom and stepfather. One night a waitress at a diner comes on to him. He meets her at a baseball field. When he returns home, he finds his stepfather dead. Nick flees. His whole life is now changed. 18 years later, he is trying to fit the pieces together, how his stepfather was killed, why and what did he have to do with it. It becomes a political intrigue.Hurwitz really keeps you on the edge of your seat as you read.
I first stumbled across writer Gregg Hurwitz with the thriller They're Watching and decided to try another. I enjoyed him the second time around with Trust No One, a mystery involving a man who has tried to run away from the pain and guilt of his beloved stepfather's murder. It is a story of intrigue that reaches into the highest powers of government and keeps you glued to the pages. I will definitely continue to search out more of Hurwitz's thrillers.

Is it paranoia or prudence that fuels our protagonist? It becomes increasingly clear that there is a dark deed being hidden, but which of the current presidential candidates is in the bad camp? When running and hiding are no longer possible, the truth must be uncovered. This fast paced book leaves our hero one step ahead of powerful political agents. I found it hard to stop reading throughout the plot twists and turns. This is an enjoyable read.
Nick Horrigan's stepfather is killed when he is 17. Nick spends the next few years of his life on the run from powerful forces who tell him his mother will die is he does not disappear. When he shows back up in Los Angeles, the cycle begins again. Black-jumpsuited me break into his apartment and spirit him away to a terrorist stand-off at a nuclear facility. He does not know why he is there. The terrorist is killed in front of him by the cellphone Nick hands him, packed with C-4. And then things...more
Mainly grabbed it due to two factors: Shield creator Shawn Ryan is a fan of Hurwitz, and this book was on sale for some insanely low price. Pretty good genre thriller stuff -- a "normal" dude with some issues basically takes on The Secret Service. Some of the twists and revelations were a bit telegraphed, but overall, I enjoyed what I read, and I'd look for another Hurwitz book to read before the likes of, I dunno, Dan Brown or other low-slumming airport thriller types.
Nick Horrigan is hiding from his past, which includes a dark secret involving his involvement in his Secret Service stepfather's death. He is dragged into a political cover-up of a mother and infant daughter's murder, and will not let it go until the perpetrator is brought to justice. I was bothered by an early event, which was left unexplained until page 300 and once explained, the ending became clear.
I found this political conspiracy type thriller to be a bit underwhelming especially as a follow-up to the author's previous book The Crime Writer which I thought was really good. Lots of action, twists, and turns that, to me, were fairly predictable. Listened to the audio version which was read by Patrick G. Lawlor.
Nick has been on the run and in hiding for 17 years. There is a large conspiracy to keep secret the fact that a senator running for President fathered a child and then had the mother, the child and a secret service agent who knew about this all murdered. The story has lots of holes but was just interesting enough to keep me reading.
This is the first time that I have read anything by this author, but it will definitely not be my last. Took off like a thoroughbred at the starting gate and sustained its power all the way to the finish line. It's very well written, and had a believable plot and characters. I've already got "Do No Harm" lined up in my TBR pile. Very highly recommended!
Elements of this story strain credibility (but thrillers often do) and one of the characters is obviously (but inexplicably) modeled after Barack Obama. Otherwise, it's a page-turning thriller that speeds forward at breakneck pace with a likable, if unremarkable, main character and some nifty plot twists.

Beautifully written, with flawless pacing and a serpentine plot, TRUST NO ONE had me up late turning pages and fully engaged with the plight of Nick Horrigan, as he worked to untangle a mystery that had kept him on the run for seventeen years. Highly recommend.
Although not the best book I've read, this did entertain me for sometime and did flip the pages. The story line gets a little convoluted, but overall it is a well put together story of the shady area of politics and mystery. The author did a good job staying to reality, generally staying in the believable realm.
Last year I read "Crime Writer" by Hurwitz, and was really impressed by it. Trust No One has been touted by reviewers as even better, so I was eager to read it. I have to say that while I enjoyed the book and couldn't put it down, I don't think it is as good as "Crime Writer".
