Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr is a Confederation Marine's marine. She has survived more deadly encounters-and kept more of her officers and enlistees alive-than anyone else in the Corps. Unexpectedly pulled from battle, Torin finds herself in an underground POW camp that shouldn't exist, where her fellow marine prisoners seem to have lost all will to escape. Now Torin must f...more

I love this series. The main character is kick-ass and the world is wonderfully, solidly filtered through her eyes. And the world? How can you not love a military composed of humans, aliens obsessed with sex, and aliens that can (and will) eat pretty much anything? Huff's ability to make me laugh in the middle of otherwise serious scenarios is amazing.

This book was more serious than book 3 (I can't remember books 1-2 very well, but I think it's more serious than them, as well), bu...more

85 out of 100 for 2010

In some ways my favorite novel of this series. Two of the novels were about military training exercises, and one was about a discovery expedition, so this was the first novel in which the reader sees Gunny Torrin Kerr in action with a platoon. She is also taken prisoner of war and finds herself imprisoned with some of those she is fighting against, only to discover there is a third side to the war that humankind has been embroiled in for centuries.

I reread this recently and enjoyed just as much as the first time. This is the final in the series about Sergeant Torin Kerr and her adventures in the Space Marines.

I would recommend that you read the first three books before picking up this one.

I love how professional Torin is. She is a Marine's Marine with kick butt abilities and no nonsense attitude but she's also feminine without being girly. She rivals Honor Harrington as one of my favorite heroines. In this ...more

I bought and read this book accidentally. I don't mean the novel somehow slipped into my shopping cart at Barnes and Noble; I mean after I started reading it, I discovered I already own it and have already read it. I was disappointed; I thought I'd found a new Confederation novel.

I love the aliens in this universe. The deTraykien (sp?) provide comic relief with their innuendo (I'm sure there are many deTraykien jokes about the word innuendo alone). The characters are distinctive. The m...more

It seems like "a strong female lead" is something that most writers are trying to give their audience these days, and yet, so many of them just manage to provide irritating, not-thinking, "even if it makes more sense to have the male lead to do this task, I'm going to do it, because I'm female and RAWR," Marysues. Huff delivers an ACTUAL strong female lead.

Kerr is a Marine. No two ways about it, in this character we enter the mind and spirit of what it means to be a...more

Strong female character, plus some things to think about. None of my libraries have the preceeding books in their system so I guess I will use birthday money to buy them from Amazon.

Reread to refresh my mind before starting the 5th. Torin finds herself in an enemy POW camp. Of course her job is to escape.

While this book blew me away, it's more like standing in the wave of a nuclear blast and watching everything blow away and I'm still standing by some unnatural stroke of luck. This book, which could be the last piece of the Confederation novels, isn't the weakest one but its not the strongest either. I am very much a fan of Book 1 & 2, but it was vital that for me to finish the whole series. Gunnery Sergeant Kerr is still badass, however and her feats in this book catapult her to legendary statu...more

The fourth Confederation novel has Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr being taken prisoner, and waking up in a very odd prison. Against insurmountable odds, she leads a band of Marines (and eventually others) towards escape.

This is the best one so far. Huff’s skill at describing the interpersonal relationships between the many varied characters shines throughout the novel. The dry humor and spot-on characterizations make this a pleasure to read. Also, despite the plot being cookie cutter on p...more

Wow... Torin is in serious trouble... reunited with her unit, confronting the 'Others', there is a flash & she wakes up in a cave... found by Kyster, a Krai with a wounded foot, she finds she is in a POW type camp underground, that there are about 100 other (human, Krai, di"Taykan) marines... and that a dozen of them are terrorizing the other marines, controlling the food, and killing/stealing from anyone new transported in...

Torin, in gunnery sargeant style, takes control, kill...more

A very gripping installment in the saga of Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr. Assumed dead, Kerr wakes up in an underground prison camp. The problem is that the enemy doesn't take prisoners. Leading a ragtag band of marines, Kerr must find a way out of the prison and work with the enemy in order to escape.

Author Huff has produced another wonderful look at the life of the non-coms in a large military force. Kerr is a tough, believable professional soldier who is good at her job and takes it persona...more

One of the things I love about this excellent series is that once I start a book, I can't put it down. I read this one in one sitting--a great way to spend a Sunday. Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr is one of my favorite SciFi heroines and is definitely the most bad-ass of them. She is again thrown into a situation where she has to take charge, try to get her people out alive and try to figure out what is really going on. This seemed like a wrap up to the series and it ended nicely but I was hop...more

Back in battle after recovering from her injuries in book #3, the Marines believe Gunnery Sgt. Torin Kerr has been killed in battle. Her father and her lover, Civilian Salvage Operator Craig Ryder, nevertheless refuse to believe it. Turns out they're right--Torin and other Confederation servicemembers are being held prisoner somewhere under the surface of a geologically unstable planet. Can Torin defeat the corrupt and abusive structure in place and engineer an escape? And since the Others don't...more

Great (Terminal World for reason why this is so short) but I'm a stoic person when I read things, so I had to grind through dialogue tree after dialogue tree that lost me with each passing jargon phrase thrown in. The characters and the action were spot on (ok, the main character was the only character that really shined... everyone else needed to die--much too annoying, much to boring). Dialogue on the basis of Gunnery Sergeant Kerr had just enough to cause enough "oomff" without givi...more

With this book, the mysterious third party in the war (a third party pretty much no one is even vaguely aware of) makes itself known more. After a mission goes very wrong, Torrin finds herself in an underground prison, along with a lot of other Marines. And, they find, soldier from the race they've been fighting for years. Of course, they end up having to work together to find their way out, while Torrin's lover is trying to figure out what happened to her (despite the fact that everyone assumes...more

I'd like this series better if the ensemble characters weren't such a revolving door. It's has a mix of fun elements that I really like, it's just the ensemble cast situation that really bugs me. This time there were a mix of characters from previous books and I was having trouble remember who came from where - not a good sign, especially since I've read all the previous books in the series recently. (Ok, so perhaps it's a comment on my memory, but it's not like I was waiting a year between e...more

I have liked this series a lot, and this is no exception. The relationship is managed without the gushiness that I find irritating (and seems completely in character). Torin manages to negotiate her people (such as they are) through more difficult and unlikely circumstances with her customary panache and aplomb.

The only sad part is that this seems to be the end of this series. Which makes sense, it's a good spot to end it...but I will miss the universe created here.

This is the fourth book in this series and it continues the high standard. On the surface, this is military SF, but I think it's actually more of an examination of interactions between various cultures. There were several unexpected developments in this book and it'll be fascinating to see how they all play out in future books. There were also some moments that really hit me hard, and were emotionally draining. This series really should be read in order, so if you haven't read any of the pre...more

The author decides to throw the ultimate scenario at Tobin Kerr: her death. However the afterlife is not what Kerr expects it to be, in fact, it looks an awful lot like living and if that's the case, she's going to keep living until something stops her. In this book, Kerr is given the ultimate challenge as a Marine - the complete breakdown of command and she goes about her normal business of creating order in the only way she can.
Lisa
Terrific book - I think the conclusion of this series, and a great one at that. I just love the little raccoon newsreporter who reappears here, and the continued development of Torin's character interacting with old and new friends is good too. An intro to her dad is interesting, and the new species which she and others connect with is good too. Further exploration of the grey silly putty species (sorry, that's what comes to mind first!) is quite noteworthy, as it reflects on us!
CJ - You Carry On As If I Don't Love You
Very rarely do I give a book five stars but the fourth book in the Valor/Confederation series deserves it.

Torin is very much the gunnery sarge in this book but she's also more of a woman bringing together the two pieces of her personality and allowing her to survive another heinous mission that should have been routine.

Craig is in here - he's grown on me- as well as some favorites like Ressk and Mashone (sp?) but as always we get to meet some new characters that you get a...more

i don't like the fact that the characters i like die, yet, it's reasonable to the story. serious, she's locked in a prison. more of that military hierarchy. not a happy - everyone lives happily ever after. again asks the questions, are lives sacrificed worth it?

As always, good military sci-fi fiction, but this conclusion (I think) to the series just had too many casualties for me to enjoy the story as much as the others in the series. Not that the other books didn't have their fair share of deaths.

I really enjoyed this series when I first ran across it, but either my tolerance for violence has gone down or the books have gotten more violent as they've gone on. Torin is engaging, but occasionally too competent and awesome to relate to.

This one started out kind of slow, and the old "gunnery sarge'll whip 'em into shape" plot was starting to bore, but when Huff got that all out of the way things started to get really interesting. A lone sentence on the last page leads me to hope for another installment...

That even when you are being screwed by the "powers that be", just doing your best with the immediate is important. We can never really know the big picture, but we can know ourselves.

Same as first three CONFEDERATION novels: great military scifi, Torin Kerr is a badass. But typos out the Susumi engine! Egads!

Fun series. I read it a while ago ad it was one of the better military SF series.
Winona
Clever story, but too much foul language. I'm not reading more of this series.

Another very entertaining entry in this series, even if I was a little disappointed in the ending. It had a final note to it, so this might be the last of the Valor books.

This series is light military sci-fi. By "light" I mean there's a lot of humor and it doesn't get bogged down in technical details or complex space battles. The protagonist is a sergeant in a Marine Corps composed of humans and two other warrior species who do all of the fighting for a bunch of aliens k...more
