Four kids, all suffering from debilitating phobias, are sent as a last resort to the School of Fear. And then things get really weird. Like, The Mysterious Benedict Society weird, only the headmistress doesn't suffer from narcolepsy. Anyway, what the kids find is not at all what they were expecting. Nor was it what I was expecting.

Tasha asked me to read this and give her my opinion. Tonight I expect to start reading it aloud to her. It isn't scary, and I think she'll enjoy all the ph...more

I can describe School of Fear in one word….wait for it….QUIRKY! I bet you thought I was going to say spooky or scary or phobias or fearful. It has those too, but it’s mostly quirky. And I really like quirky.

The four main characters are children with serious phobias. So serious, in fact, that their parents have sent them to the School of Fear to be cured. My favorite character was Madeleine She was smart and soft-spoken, but she also had a major fear of bugs – especially spiders. I c...more

Empat anak dengan ketakutan berlebih (phobia) atas beberapa hal yang nggak biasa dikumpulkan dalam sebuah sekolah eksklusif khusus yang juga nggak biasa. Menarik. Saya yakin ini bisa menjadi bacaan yang membuat kita ngakak haha-hihi.. if only diceritakan dengan eksekusi yang tepat.

Bab-bab awal masih terasa memikat, sukses membuat saya ber-haha-hihi dengan pengenalan karakter dan berbagai percakapan konyol. Madeleine yang hobi nyemprot obat nyamuk. Theo yang lebay bin dramatis. Lulu y...more

Not every book I read can be a great one. In fact, I'm not sure I want every book I read to be a great one. There is something to be said for a good book that is a light, entertaining read. School of Fear was a light, entertaining read. It was just a bit too light for me.

The premise of School of Fear is that four teenagers with various phobias are sent to rural Massachusetts to overcome their fears. This book is populated with quirky characters, set in a funky mansion and contai...more

it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't ground-breaking and it didn't even go as far as similar books have gone in my past reading history. I found all of the "shocking surprises" to be predictable and yet the plot seemed to jump around at times, and i'd wonder if i missed something. For instance, at one point, they are woken up in the middle of the night and they learn of an emergency, so they creep around, trying not to wake up the bad guy, gathering supplies for their escape and then......more

There’s fear and then there’s a phobia, as the family, friends and even minor acquaintances of Madeleine Masterson, Theodore Bartholomew, Lulu Punchalower and Garrison Feldman have found out the hard way. With few options left, their parents elect to send them to the top-secret and extremely exclusive School of Fear, run by the more than slightly batty Mrs. Wellington. When...more

School of Fear is 2/3 of a great book. It begins in a promising way, full of humor and intrigue and witty narrative, similar to Lemony Snicket or Roald Dahl. And the main characters--four children with various debilitating phobias--are fairly sympathetic.

They get sent to the School of Fear, a mysterious and somewhat spooky institution with a reputation for curing children of their phobias. And if it takes a little too long for the story to get there, at least we're still curious ab...more

This is a funny, offbeat book for middle grade students with an intriguing premise: four 12-year-olds go to the School of Fear one summer to overcome their phobias. Madeleine Masterson comes from England with a fear of bugs and spiders; Theodore Bartholomew is afraid of dying (and endearingly annoying); Lulu Punchalower is claustrophobic and mean; and Garrison Feldman, athlete extraordinaire, from Miami is afraid of large bodies of water. Eccentric former beauty pagent contestant, Mrs. Wellingto...more

I really enjoyed this book. I listened to the audio CD of this book. It is set up to be the first book in a series. Anyone who has ever read the Miss Piggle-Wiggle stories will enjoy this book.

The premise: Four children with crippling phobias enroll at the exclusive (and secluded) School of Fear, a place so exclusive that people won't even speak its name aloud without taking certain precautions.

The goal: To conquer their fears -- a feat made VERY difficult by the confli...more

School of Fear is the story of four kids trying to conquer their fears by enrolling in an exclusive, hush-hush summer program in Massachusetts called…the School of Fear. The only way to attend is by getting a recommendation from a therapist who is in the know about the school. Everyone who knows about it swears by its results.

The four kids in question are Theo, who is afraid of dying, Madeline who is afraid of spiders and insects, Lulu who is claustrophobic and afraid of heights, an...more

Mrs. Wellington runs an unusual summer school for kids with extreme phobic reactions to whatever they're afraid of. This group of four kids was at the school last summer and they're better than they were but they're not cured yet. Add to the mix Schmidty, the hairy toed cook; an elderly bulldog named Macaroni; and a new kid, a girl who is terrified of being alone--EVER--and who talks through her pet ferret. And then there's the reporter whose prospective article might make the school shut dow...more

Four children, Madeline, Garrison, Lulu and Theo and their families, have had it with their persistent phobias. They've tried everything, but with no success. Madeline still requires any building she enters to have been recently fumigated as she fears any type of insect as well as spiders. Garrison, is afraid of water in any quantity, which unfortunate as he lives in Miami, Lulu carries handcuffs with her at all times, not to accentuate her rebellious wardrobe, but in the chance that someone ...more

Have you ever read "School of Fear" by Gitty Daneshvari? If you haven't, well, maybe you'd like reading this one, it's a light writing with some interesting information about phobias.

Anywayy.. for me personally the highlight of this book is when Mrs. Wellington said to Garrison, "You tell your bossy, old, grouchy father that getting over your fear is a process, one we must confront daily, and that if he has a problem with that, he should investigate why he is more afraid...more

Madeleine Masterson is deathly afraid of bugs. Theodore Bartholomew is scared of dying, Lulu Punchalower is scared to death of confined spaces, and Garrison Feldman is terrified of deep water. Since their fears are turning out to be like obsessions of some sort, their parents have no choice but to send them to School of Fear, a school run by Mrs. Wellington. But her unconventional teaching methods turn out to be more frightening than even their fears. Thats when the foursome realize that this ju...more

This cute novel is more of a three and a half than a three. Why doesn't Goodreads let us use half-stars? Anyway, it has a lot of potential, but it just doesn't quite make it to great. I'm not sure where it falls short: it's a fun concept, but the plot stalls a bit. The best thing about it is that it is funny; its sense of humor reminds me of Sesame Street or Disney funny, with little nods to the adults along for the ride. My colleagues should appreciate this dig: "Mrs. Punchalower and ...more

My youngest daughter (7 years) picked this out of the book fair at her elementary school. I started reading it, realizing that it's a bit advanced for her at the moment. By the end of the year, it shouldn't be a problem.

So far, it's fine.

I have to remind myself to approach the reading of these YA books with the mentality of a teen...which, if you knew me personally, you would know that is not all that hard to do.

I enjoyed SoF very much, but the adult reader in me f...more

This first children's offering by Gitty Daneshvari is sure to appeal to fans of The Series of Unfortunate Events with its dark humor and wacky characters. The children's characters are well developed, each with a phobia that sets them apart from their peers. The story is imaginative, if a little predictable at the end, but new enough to appeal to young readers. The illustrations are fantastic and enough to encourage children to at least take a closer look at the books. I have never seen anything...more

Enjoyed this one. It made me laugh out loud. Four kids, all with serious phobias, are sent to the "School of Fear" to be cured, against their will. This falls smack into my favorite genre (on second thought, it's probably not well enough defined to be a true genre) of "quirky and odd books" or "books for people with a weird sense of humor." The characters are almost all unusual (aging beauty queen who collects nasty smells in jars, blind caretaker with a snappy...more

Four children with various phobia spend their summer at a strange school with will get rid of thier fears. This is what I had hope the Mysterious Benedict Society (MBS)would be. It has the similar quirky off kilter setting like MBS or the Lemony Snickett books. This book though is able to sustain itself better than MSB at least for me. I got tired of the MSB plot. This plot held my attention better and I was able to finish the book. I didn't finish MSB. I did figure out how the book was g...more

This book is funny, informative and creative. If you commbine all these words it becomes interesting. The storyline is basically about 3 12 year olds and one 13 year old boy. Garisson, Madeline, Lulu and Theo. Garisson is scared of deep water. Madeline is scared of insects and spiders. Lulu is scared of confined spaces, and Theo is petrifed of dying. The four kids go to School of Fear to overcome their fears, but in this school there is no exams or homework. The one teacher is all about competit...more

i really liked this book, the vocabulary for it was much harder than i thought it would be (not too hard for me), because she got this book for my 9 year old sister. some of it i had only learned this month. i really liked that at the start of every new chapter it explained a new phobia. the actual story was pretty ea...more

THis book, This book is my favorite book! With the phobias on each chapter and even the crazy Mrs. Wellington. Madeline, Theo, Lulu, and Garrison are all afraid of something. Madeline is afraid of bugs also known as entomophobia. Theo afraid of death Thanatophobia. Lulu has claustrophobia. Garrison has thalassophobia (fear of large bodies of water). Not average fears though, severe fears. Madeline wears a veil and carys bug spray and bug killer every where, she even refuses to go outside. But ...more

This was a very easy read. It was similar to some of Lemony Snicket's stuff, but it was less depressing than Snicket's writings. It was an interesting story and at the beginning of each chapter there was the name of a phobia and what it meant. I enjoy learning words that are uncommon, so this made the book more enjoyable. I felt it ended abruptly. This might have been because, supposedly this is only the first book in a 4 or 5 book series. I would be willing to read the next one. If you enjoyed ...more

If you really liked Lemony Snicket, The Willoughbys, and/or The Mysterious Benedict Society, you will probably like this book, which seems to be heavily influenced by all three. The book is about a group of young teens who suffer from various fears (insects, deep water, elevators, and pretty much everything else for one character) whose parents send them to The School of Fear. There, the very odd Mrs. Wellington, who lives in a really bizarre house with truly strange people, appears to be teac...more

This was absolutely adorable. Four children with various phobias are sent to an exclusive school to get over their various phobias. I love that each chapter page had a different phobia and its meaning. The illustrations are reminiscent of "A Series of Unfortunate Events" and other darker children's books. While I had an idea that a major plot point was a set-up, it didn't detract from the story and found the ending quite satisfactory. My only quibble with the book is the bad guy is nam...more

This is a fun and quirky book about a group of kids from different backgrounds who all have one thing in common- they all have phobias. Madeleine Masterson is afraid of bugs, Theodore Bartholomew is afraid of dying, Lulu Punchalower is afraid of confined spaces, and Garrison Feldman is afraid of deep water. Each child recieves an mysterious invitation to attend the eccentric ex-beauty queen Mrs. Wellington's School of Fear, where they must conquer their phobias in the most unusual ways. Througho...more

Four middle-school age kids are enrolled in Mrs. Edith Wellington's School of Fear to overcome their ever-growing phobias. Although the young characters are a bit stereotypical (the fat kid, the mean girl, etc.), the author "reals" them up via their over-the-top pathological reactions to their fears. They are a surprisingly likable bunch as they come together in the face of adversity. The adult characters are just silly fun. Breezy and zany, this book is a satisfactory piece of diversi...more

Gitty Daneshvari was born in Los Angeles to an Iranian father and an American mother. As a child she talked incessantly, feeling the need to comment on everything around her. While at first charmed by her verbose nature, her family soon tired of the constant commenting. This is how she found writing — it was better than talking since she didn't even need anyone else to do it with.
