Son of the Morning
A scholar specializing in ancient manuscripts, Grace St. John never imagined that a cache of old documents she discovered was the missing link to a lost Celtic treasure. But as soon as she deciphers the legend of the Knights of the Templar - long fabled to hold the key to unlimited power - Grace becomes the target of a ruthless killer bent on abusing the coveted force. Det...more

So, as I was reading this book, I couldn't decide if I loved it, or if I was annoyed with it! Now that I have finally finished it though, I'm going to have to go with loved it.
Even though it took... oh, around 250 pages for the main characters to finally meet, (I kept thinking, OK, get ON with it already! Time travel so you can meet him already! *wink*)however, the build up was interesting in itself and kept me intrigued. And when they DO finally meet, it makes up for the slow, seem...more

I really liked this book. The pictures the descriptions relate are very vivid, and yet I think this could have been achieved with a shorter book and a lot less words. It didn't really gain steam until well into the second half.
The subject of the Templars and the treasure has been done extensively, especially over the last few years. But I found this interpretation original enough to make the story interesting, and as the book was written over 10 years ago, this lends to the intere...more

I recently finished another reread of Son of the Morning. This is one of those books that I just have to reread every other year. I give it 5*+, and would rate it 10* if that were possible.
Grace St. John is a twentieth-century research scholar who has recently begun deciphering some 14th century documents involving the Knights Templar. Then her husband & brother are brutally murdered, and she is on the run, protecting her life and the documents that someone desperately wants. It was ...more

One of those books I've read over and over through the years, Son of the Morning always lands at the top of my all time favorite books lists. A romantic suspense thriller with a paranormal time traveling twist that ends up in historical romance territory, Son Of The Morning has it all- gutsy heroine who reveals her strength through edge of your seat action and a smokin hot, uber-alpha hero like only a romance novel can conjure- and you have a page turner that stands the test of time, even after...more
This book wasn't horrible or anything, but it just didn't give me what I look for when I pick up a romance novel. Most of it was more of a thriller/mystery/crime novel; Grace doesn't even meet Niall until the last quarter of the book, if that. I got impatient watching her dodge bad guys and work on her translation, even if it was somewhat satisfying seeing her outwit her enemies and get stronger. When I read a romance novel, I like the two mains to meet relatively early on, and to spend a lot...more
I'm confuse on how many star that i have to put to rate this book.
I actually like the story, the hero and the heroine. which is most important in any good romance novels.
It's about time travel so not a dish that you usually get from Linda Howard's plate. And it took quite sometime before both main characters met.
The story is about a Knight Templar document which promised power and wealth beyond imagination. and because of this, Grace's life change forever.

Grace St. John has been framed for murder. She knows who the real murderer is, and the shock is overwhelming. She doesn’t know exactly what she did to deserve this cruel fate, but she has reason to believe that it has something to do with the ancient pages from the Knights of the Templar that she has been translating.
Forced to live her life on the run from both the police and the murderer, Grace spends her time working low paying jobs and attempting to translate the Gaelic pages. ...more

I almost had to give this five stars just because I have now finally read a time travel romance in which the author seems to understand that a 20th century American is unlikely to understand 14th century Scottish Gaelic. In this case, Grace St. John is an expert in ancient languages, though she still struggles with Gaelic.

On the run, her previously happy life destroyed, she searches through legend to learn of a celebrated warrior who may be the only one able to help her thwart her enemies. Wonderful. Great. Exciting. I loved the heroine Grace.
She was a living a normal happily married life working as an archaeologist. Then her husband and brother were killed and she became a fugitive fleeing from the powerful people who killed them. How she fled, what she did to get away, stay away, live under other identities and outsmart them was exciting and amazing. The author creatively transformed Grace into another type of person. This book is a hard one to review. The books seems to contain two completely different stories in one. Unfortunately, they don't slide smoothly together like intended. If one is looking for a good romance, this will probably disappoint. The H/h don't even meet until the last third of the book. I was one who approached it as a romance and spent the best part of the book frustrated, almost missing the importance of the story.

This is one of those book that will keep you at the edge of the seat, wishing for the two leads to meet already, while hoping the author would postpone the meeting for a little while longer.
I have to admit at first I didn't particularly like it, though time-travel is one of my favorite genre, but unfortunately the actual time-travel happened in the last fifty pages or so.

This was a nice book with a little time travel included. Grace is a old language translator that is trying to translate some papers that talk about the Templar Knights. Niall is one knight that is mentioned. But when her husband and brother are murdered before her very eyes Grace is determined to avenge their deaths. Grace realizes that the papers are a link with what has happened to her and her family, so continues to translate the papers while on the run for her life. Grace finds Niall a facin...more
I've read a few books by Howard and this one had a different feel to it, to the point that I wasn't entirely sure what to shelve it under. The other books I've read by her have been romantic suspense, whereas this one had some paranormal elements (time travel) and also some historical romance aspects. So in the end I just put it on my paranormal romance shelf.

Linda Howard is kind of hit or miss for me. I've only read a hand full of her books, but of those few, some I LOVED, some I liked, a few were so-so and one I didn't like at all. This one I liked a lot. I had to give it 4 stars instead of 5 because it seemed like it didn't give me enough of the romance that I really wanted. I was engrossed in the first 75% of the book when she was running, but I was waiting for a love story (any love story) to kick in. When the romance finally came it was sweet, ...more
Oh. My. Word. I bought this book on the Kindle, not realizing it was going to be one of those bodice-ripping, Fabio-like hero romance novels. Seriously, I was laughing out loud at some of the sex scenes in this book. Unrealistic, waaaaay too graphic, and more adjectives than anything else. The story line (when not involving the romance) was compelling and interesting, as Grace sees her husband and brother murdered and she goes on the run to keep from being murdered herself. But the time-travelli...more
I am a collector of Linda Howards work since she wrote for Harlequin Silhouette, Loving Evangeline being one. I picked Son of the Morning, because I have never read a book that is based on today but would take you back in time and make it seem so real. Son of the Morning, will captivate you, it draws you into the story of Grace's life and how she is dealing with all that is happenning but back in the past is the key to her answer, and when they feel each other in their own times; you can feel ...more
After starting this novel a week ago after reading Karen Marie Moning's blog about her list of favorite reads...I finally gave up today. I can't finish it. I was a little skeptical when I checked this book out of the library because it did seem like a thriller/crime/mystery/paranormal. I don't like the whole who-done-it-revenge scene. I didn't think that Grace was a likable heroine. Much of her character development in my opinion was implied and suggested instead of portrayed. I know it's a terr...more
Picked up the audio of this at the library, assumed it was just another romance novel, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it was more. Not your typical romance, although there is some but it goes beyond that. It spans centuries, a little bit fantastical but very intriguing and if you like Celtic historical fiction with a little of modern thrown it this is the book for you. I loved the plot, but I don't want to give it away, so read it yourself and see what I mean! An engaging and fascinatin...more
Every time I read Linda Howard, I remember how much I enjoy her writing. This was a great story, very interesting and well told. She really keeps you waiting, on your toes. The only thing is that I feel she dragged out the part of Grace being on the run a little too long before she finally connected with Niall, then they were together in reality such a short amount of time. I kind of wish that she had cut the 'on the run' part a little shorter to give the 2 main characters more time together...more
I was excited to read this book after I read a review of it online, since it involves romance and time travel, as well as the legends surrounding the Knights Templar. All of these are particular interests to me. The reason I gave it 3 instead of 4 stars is that I thought the period before the time travel was stretched out too far. I knew the heroine was going to go back to 14th century Scotland, and I just wanted her to get there. Then, when she did, it seemed to me that the events were too ...more
Unabridged audiobook version - I wrote this review for one of the Speaking of Audiobook reviews at AAR:
Narrated by Natalie Ross
Only recently released in audio format, this 1997 time travel romance gets an A on both narration and content. Hero Niall is classic Howard style at its best while Grace is the smart woman on the run. Narrator Natalie Ross performs multiple male voices with clear distinction and it was a pleasure listening to Niall and Grace’s verbal exchanges. And, not o...more

A unique time-travel romance, with a goodly amount of suspense as well (which, I admit, surprised me). It was on the darker side, pretty serious (which usually I'm not all that into), but the story was very compelling and all its elements-- archaeology, murder, an archaic puzzle, the Knights Templar-- made quite a combo. The heroine was a great character who constantly rose to the challenge despite all of the odds. Even the time-travel worked for me. I can see why this title is always on the lis...more

I re-read this book the other day. This was a top shelf book for me.Linda Howard has always been a favorite of mine.
SOM is a time travel book. But to be honest,it doesnt happen until the last few chapters of the book. The main charoctors dont even meet until those chapters. But that doesnt take away from the story.
It was well thought out. But now that I think about it.Ms Howards newer books seem to have this theme. More of the hide and seek than was really needed.

This book could have been so much better. I would have loved to see someone with exceptional writing skills such as Marsha Canham or Kathleen Woodiwiss take on this storyline. The actual concept is extremely unique, and for those of us who have seen (and read) it all, a unique story is a rare find. However I must point out a few things that made this story a less than steller read and therefore a bit unbelievable for me. For one, the author spent more than half the book with the heroine on the r...more

I think I went into this with too high expectations. I was in the mood for a nice romance novel and add in the fact that I love time travel novels I was super interested. I’m also a huge fan of anything relating to the Templar’s; however, I was not expecting it to be the focal point of this novel. I wasn’t even going to try to compare it to Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander time travel novels, because that’s just setting any book up for failure as far as I’m concerned. But imagine ...more

3.5 stars, but rounded up to 4 for a fantastic first 2/3 of the novel.
This was supposed to be a time-travel romance. But what I actually read was completely unexpected--and so much better! Barring some awkward plot twists towards the end, this was a great read.
The description of the book above is fairly accurate. Grace, an archeologist specializing in medieval languages, stumbles upon a set of documents relating to the great treasure of the Knights of the Templar. So...more
