The author emphasizes the distinction between the legendary Muin al-din, revered by Muslims across the subcontinent and beyond, and the historical figure, about whom we actually know almost nothing. He shows how the cult grew over the centuries and especially with the royal patronage that blossomed under Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. He then explores the history of the shrine itself and its associated pilgrimage, before detailing the administration of the shrine up to modern times.
