One Night for Love is the story that leads to Mary Balogh’s beloved novel, A Summer to Remember. (Which leads to the Slightly series and the Simply series.) Not only is it a good story in and of itself, it adds a lot of detail to the character of Lauren, the heroine of ASTR. Just as Neville is about to marry Lauren, his childhood friend, a woman in worn cloths enters the church. Neville instantly recognizes Lily, his wife, who he thought had been killed in an ambush by the French in the war in S More...

Sweet story and a very emotional story.

Lily and Neville Wyatt, Earl of Kilbourne nothing can seperate their love for one another, whether it is a person, an event or circumstances they find thrust upon them. Not even themselves.

Neville is so kind and tender and steady. Lily is so sweet, yet strong and courageous.

A bit of a mystery to this one also.

A great pre-quel to the Simply series about the Bedwyn family, and also to the Slighty series where More...

Re-release. Complex characters, well written. All of the characters were grownups, and isn't that refreshing? No lies, no hidden agendas, no big misunderstandings. Just people caught in an impossible situation, trying to find the right way to go about living with it.

I could have done without the mystery subplot and I bitterly disliked the way one plot point was resolved, although it was telegraphed so often and so early that I knew it was coming. I read this on a Nook, and it was so f More...

Just when Neville Wyatt, Earl of Kilbourne, is about to marry his long-time friend a bedraggled looking woman enters the church and says she she is already his wife. Neville couldn't be more shocked especially when he realizes that the woman is Lily, his wife of one day and night who he thought died in the war. After the first shock he is happy to have her back and wants to continue with their marriage.
Lily only came back to Neville because after a horrible time in captivity she needs some More...

I find Mary Balogh to be very hit and miss, but this one worked for me. It was predictable, and I don't just mean in the ways romance novels are all predictable, as well as a bit tiresome at points, but there were enough twists and turns to keep things interesting and the actual follow-through of the predictable events was managed much better than I would have expected.

Basic premise: earl gets married on a whim to an unsuitable woman while serving in the army, think More...

One Night for Love is my very first Mary Balogh read, and I assure you, it wouldn’t be my last.

One Night for Love is an overwhelming love story, in it being wonderful and extraordinary. It was overwhelming that it made me dizzy. But don’t get me wrong, I was dizzy in a good way.

Neville Wyatt, the new Earl of Kilbourne, was born into a respectable family. Everything was planned for him. Up to the simple things to even his future wife. His life was completely drawn for him. More...

Even though this story was filled with every contrived and cliched historical romance plot ever written, from amnesia (not a big part but mentioned in chapter 2), secret wedding, first spouse not really dead and shows up at second wedding, rags to riches, servants secretly raising child of peerage to save her life, evil family villain, etc etc etc... I still loved this book!
In particular, I loved Lily. She was refreshing and sweet. I loved how she and Neville never gave up on their love More...

Earl of Kilbourne, Neville Wyatt, is about to get married to long time friend Lauren when a haggard woman rushes into the church and announces that Neville is already married—to herself. Neville immediately recognizes Lily, whom he married while fighting the war in Spain. They had barely been married for one day when Lily was killed during an ambush.

Neville never told anyone about the marriage when he came back to England after the war but he quickly takes Lily under his care when s More...

What can I say, I love Balogh, I love her characters, I love her pacing. Suddenly realized I hadn't read this one which somehow is listed as the first in the Bedwyn series and which I seemed to have missed. Not sure at all why this is attributed to that series - I don't see a connection, but the ones I've read I read several years ago so maybe I've not recognized one of the characters who will be further developed in the series.
Of course this is not perfect, and I do wonder about Lauren wh More...

The plot felt a little jagged in places for me, specifically the first 1/2 of the book. Sometimes the characters did things for reasons that were not explained. However, in the end, things came together.

As a whole I enjoyed the book in a kind of passive way. Lily is an enjoyable, independent woman/girl. Neville is a supportive, dashing man. I also enjoyed the background love story of Lyndon and Elizabeth. The love scenes between Lily & Neville (specifically the physical parts) are t More...

As usual I read this series in the wrong order, and though I've read the Slightly books several times, I've only just read this first prequel. I have to say I wasn't disappointed, as can happen when reading an earlier book after later ones. Balogh is a class act. Whilst the plot isn't original - what plot is? I found the characters well-drawn, their motives understandable and their emotions authentic. I liked the sub-plot and the supporting characters. Agreed it's a bit plain who the villa More...

I’ve already read great reviews by Balogh and decided to give her a try. I was not disappointed and found One Night for Love to be a really good book.

Lily’s father was shot in the war and that very night she married Neville, Earl of Kilbourne, so she would be protected by his name. It was something both Neville and Lily dreamed of because they’ve always had a secret love for one another. They share only one wonderful night together that is ended with gunshots that unconsciously inju More...

One Night For Love is the first prequel to Mary Balogh's Slightly series. A Summer to Remember is a continuation of the events in this book and the two are best read in order.

Neville Wyatt met Lily Doyle during the war when she was 14 and he was 23. He felt a deep affection for her, but he knew that nothing could ever happen between them because of the difference in their social position (not to mention their ages). He was the heir to an earldom and Lily the illiterate daughter of a More...

A silly, trite and oh so predictable regency romance (2.5). The story opens as Neville Wyatt Earl of Killbourne is preparing to wed his childhood friend and in walks the bedraggled Lily - the wife he thought dead and no one knew existed. Back flash to a year ago when Neville served in the military and Lily's father died and Neville married her for protection - a bit of a stretch there as her father was a sergeant and Neville heir to an earldom and a major. Oh well. They have "one night of l More...

A predictable plot but I still liked it. Nev and Lily were very sweet; however, it was a bit frustrating that they kept themselves separated when they loved each other openly. She loves him, she knows he loves her, and vice versa, why stay away from each other? I loved the b-love story with Lyndon and Elizabeth. The conversation at Clara's birthday party was aww-worthy. The minor character Joe was amusing too, I wish he had a bigger part or his own book. Overall, a 3.5 star book and I'll probabl More...

I have read one other Balogh book, but this was a much better read.

I loved this book and the characters were a pleasure to read. Not once did I find myself lagging in intrest.

The book starts off with a very big bang as Lily gatecrashes the wedding to The Earl and announcesin front of the ton that she is his wife, which causes a mighty stir. Thearl had long since thought Lily dead from an ambush in Portugal.

Balogh writes the charaters in such a way that I cou More...

Unlike the next book in this series, I liked this book less the more I thought on it. It really isn't as memorable as one might think - I hardly remember a thing about it, aside from the cliched "You can't get married, I'm your wife!" soap opera plot. 'Fish out of water in Regency England' is not terribly hard to find, and, having been done before, is just not very memorable. Every time I try to remember some moment the main characters have, I find myself getting them confused with More...

Very sweet love story between an earl and his long lost wife, now found again. This was more a coming of age story for his wife who was raised as a commoner but due to circumstances of marriage, found herself thrust into the role of a countess and later, <spoiler>the daughter of a duke</spoiler>. The narrative takes on a whimsical hopeful tone throughout the story which is refreshing and simply lovely to read.

This excellent and fast-paced plot keeps you involved right up to the end as well as unwilling to put the book down. Lily Doyle is an incredibly sympathetic and likable character and Neville, Earl of Kilbourne, honorable and trustworthy from beginning to end. Written in five parts, it almost feels like one has read five books by the end. Each has a distinctive and individual flavor to separate it from the others.

One Night for Love was a lovely book, with a touching love story. Yes, I'll admit the story is a little heavy-handed, but Ms. Balogh did a nice job of anchoring it with believable, and likable, characters. I especially liked how she let the heroine be her own person, had her find herself, and had the hero accept her the way she was before any of it! That in itself is unique in the romance genre, in particular in historical (Regency) romances. I felt for everyone - Lily and Lauren, mostly. I'm no More...

This book was ok, although I've liked most of Balogh's books better. Good characters, but the plot twists and turns and the characters actions were not very believable. That isn't a deal-breaker for me, but I like the books to be more fun (i.e. farce) if that's the case. This one didn't enchant me like most of her others have.

I thought it would be fun to read love stories in February. Well, this booko was definitely worth it. A strong young woman ready to make herself a life and the man who loves her and tries to hold her back. A twist and tumble kind of book that kept me reading until finished.

Kind of depressing in some ways (ex: Lauren being jilted at the altar, the circumstances of Lily's capture) but otherwise a good read. The overall storyline premise is actually very unique and interesting. I read a Summer to Remember first, which I really regret!

All the interesting stuff happened either in flashbacks or in narration and we hardly got to see any of it. It wasn't a bad book but it did get repetitive, and by the end I was skimming. And as important as endings are for me, my skimming an ending is pretty bad.

I thought this story was a romantic treasure.
From start to finish as a romance I found Lilly and Neville's characters engaging and quite endearing. Elizabeth and the Duke were great background characters and there was something sweet and hopeful about the tale.

Mary Balogh has written a wonderfully romantic story about a couple who's love for one another conquers all and stands the test of rank, time, distance and adversity. What a beautiful tale, I am so glad it was recommended to me! 5 big stars!!!
