When Sir Nathaniel Gascoigne comes to London to help find suitable marriages for his sister and cousin, he’s surprised to meet with a colleague and fellow solider widowed wife and old friend Sophie Armitage. Sophie has became somewhat of a celebrity because of her husband’s act of heroism. But Sophie’s life is anything but pleasant as she deals with many hardships after his husband’s death. Meeting with Nathaniel again, brings feelings Sophie had kept hidden long ago to resurface, and when she ...more

I'm a Mary Balogh fangirl, so am gradually working my way through her backlist. This one is from 1998, and it bears all of the Balogh signature features: a dauntless heroine (who's terribly insecure underneath), a swoonworthy hero, and LOTS of secondary characters. So many secondary characters that I couldn't keep them straight, but that didn't matter.

The romance between two old friends was sweet, especially because neither of them ever expected it. The widowed heroine had not had an especially

Grande Balogh!

E la coppia Eden/Lavinia? Le

I liked the way Balogh, who is one of my favorite Regency romance authors, twists the lives of the characters in this book. Nathaniel is perfect as the "hero," and Sophia is so kind one cannot help but feel sympathy for her. In this one, the reader cheers for the couple to finally get together and stay together. I also wanted to cheer when Nathaniel, Kenneth, Rex, and Eden showed at Pinter's apartment. I wanted someone to beat the "crap" out of the man, and Nathaniel was the perfect person to do ...more

Definitely a good story - but I didn't realize it was the third in a series! So I kept wondering, who are all these people? This wasn't my favorite Balogh, but still enjoyable. I would actually really like to read the first book in the series now.

Sophie Armitage was married to an officer who died a heroic death in the Napoleonic War. His heroism got her a modest government pension and feted by the ton, but she is secretly lonely. Then his old cavalry buddies, the so-called Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, return to London. Sophie and Nathaniel rekindle their old friendship, and quickly fall into bed together. But Sophie is being blackmailed (view spoiler) ...more

I don't remember Mary Balogh's books being offensive before, merely easy reads. Sophie was just ridiculous. It's split between whether I'm more annoyed at her martyr complex, her incredible rudeness to her friends, or her senselessness. On another note, the writing was a lot more choppy than I remember.

Irrestistible is probably my second favourite book of Mary Balogh's. I just adored the story of Sophie and Nathaniel. It just makes me feel warm all over revisiting these two. I'm not normally in love with a widow storyline, but this talented writer can probably make me love anything as long as she's written it.

This book is part of three books, and four heros. This, in my opinion, is the best of the lot ... or maybe I just loved the story so much the others just couldn't compare. Sohpie is a lo

Wonderful story of a woman who was in a very damaging marriage to a decent man and is trying to establish an independent life now that her husband has died a war hero at the battle of Waterloo.

Relationships from the years she was "following the drum" are reestablishing themselves in her life as one of the men her husband served with is trying to blackmail her and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse renew their friendship with her.

This appears to be the last book in a series, so now I will have t

What can I say, but I love almost all of Balogh's books. Unfortunately, my library didn't have the first 2 in this series so I am forever doomed to read books out of sequence. This book is about 4 men who fought together during the war. Two are still bachelors. One of the unwed men is trying to marry off a sister and cousin and because of this all four men decide to meet in London for the season. They run into the widow of one of their former war colleagues whom all four were fond of.Of course w ...more

This charming and witty Regency romance presents a group of friends resolved never to marry despite their presence in London for the beau monde's spring season of courtship and romance. Confirmed bachelor Nathaniel Gascoigne is a well-regarded veteran of the Napoleonic Wars. Although in town primarily as an escort for his sister and cousin as they are introduced to high society, he also plans to reunite with his wartime companions, dubbed "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse," for some carousing ...more

Another of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse books, at least Ms. Balogh manages to make them all quite different. Indiscreet is by far my favorite of the three, but this one has many good points as well. I particularly liked Sophie's not being of the nobility yet she is feisty and capable as well as kind. I was a little less happy with Nat Gascoigne and so many courtships amongst the other characters that it was easy to lose track of them all.

I thought this one one of the survivors club stories because it involves friends who were soldiers. But these men called the 4 Horseman of Apocalypse are not injured. This story stand alone as a novel and until the end I didn't realize it was part of a series. Darn I hate reading books out of order. I just grabbed it off the shelf. Ohh well.

So Irrrestible refers to the eyes( and other body parts) of Nathaniel who has come to London to reconnect with his 3 friends while he tries to get his siste

This is an excellent book full of wonderful characters and lots of emotion. There are many good reviews here on Goodreads, so I'll just add that I love the quality of the writing and the care Balogh has taken to make her characters believable, and to make the characters' actions and reaction feel so realistic.

Quite possibly one of the best "friends to lovers" stories I've ever read. I was moved to tears, which is not easy to do for me. All of the characters were colorful, especially Lavinia and Ede, but Nathanial really stole the show for me. A wonderful read.

Regency romance with sex.

This is the 3rd of the series, though I was able to read it as a stand alone. The others in the other 2 books make an appearance.

So far I've enjoyed everything MB has written This book included. This is an older release, but it's still MB's "voice". I liked both H/h & the secondary romance between Eden & Lavinia. Although, it would have been nice if they had some more page time.
There is just the right balance of drama & you don't feel it goes overboard. I

... Me aburro.
¿Arriesgarme o no? De momento, no

This is a reprint, I believe. I hate that I apparently missed it first time around, because I truly do not remember reading it before. The heroine is the widow of a war hero. Her husband was killed trying to save the life of a young officer during the battle of Waterloo, immediately after saving several other lives. She received a house and a pension from the government and is living quite nicely, except for one teensy little debt that's cropped up from her husband's past. Except that you know f ...more

I was unsure about the premise of this book, even though I adore Mary Balogh and have several of her earlier works hanging around to read if I need a realiable author's book close at hand. The friends to lover's angle can be awkward and I really think the blackmail trope is tiresome. However, my heart ached for Sophie and Nathaniel once they decided to give into their surprise attraction to each other. I have rarely read such a tender, heartbreaking romance. I knew what the blackmailer had on po ...more

Absolutely loved this book:) Ms. Balogh is at her finest when the characters are less-than-perfect, when love comes alongside them, steady and faithful and yes---happily ever after. I loved Sophie, the heroine and the way she stood strong instead of taking an easy way out. Those types of characters are my favorites among all the amazing people she's created.

Nathaniel is one of four war buddies that comprise the four horsemen of the apocalypse. He is returning to London for season to marry off the last of his five sisters and his cousin. The four friends reunite and run across another friend's widow, good ol' Sophie. Beneath her good buddy exterior beats a woman's heart. Trouble turns up, and the four horsemen ride to her rescue, against her wishes of independence.

I have to say this is not my favorite Mary Balogh novel. While her characters often ha

I waffle on this one- I like it well enough to re-read on occasion, and the closeted first husband is an interesting (if fraught) theme in a minor key on the philandering straight first husband, but there is not much novel or particularly well-crafted here to truly hold my attention.
Lisa O'Neill
I love Mary Balogh, but this book did not live up to the skillful characterization and cleverly woven plot of which I know she is capable. It seems to completely fall apart about three quarters of the way through, as if she'd grown bored by the blackmail plot, bored by Sophie's histrionics and bored with the romance between her main characters and thus had to introduce (and wrap up) a secondary romance to keep things moving. Maybe her contract date was looming, maybe her heart simply wasn't in t ...more

This was a loan and I was assured it was a stand alone. Sigh, this is what I get for believing my goddaughter unconditionally. It is of course, the final book in a trilogy even though there are "Four Horsemen", English nobles who are heroes in the war and come marching home again to take up various causes and caresses.

I will read the other two but wish I'd read them in order.

This one seems predictable but there are some interesting twists to the predictability. Another strong woman character who

I've been on regency reading jag ... and have enjoyed many of Mary Balogh's books.
This one was very entertaining ... I liked Nathaniel Gascoigne, compelled to come to the London season to launch yet another sister and a difficult cousin, and young widow Sophie Armitage, whose secrets unfold like the peels of an onion throughout the book. The book is a little spicy, like most of Balogh's books, but the story is entertaining. I especially enjoyed the independent minded Lavinia in this book. Not al
