recommends it for:
Naguib Mahfouz fans, people visiting Egypt
I picked this up in a Cairo bookstore to complete the whole Egyptian experience. Relentlessly depressing - a look at one family's descent into poverty following the death of the father. Okay enough, but I must have been missing something in the translation - the language felt very textbook and colourless to me.

A little bit to late for me to read his work, but i found myself very much admire his style and his vision. i read the indonesian version which translated into "Awal dan Akhir" (divided into 2 books) -- a very thick one -- I love the way he portrays Egypt and the society... the problems etc.

I almost didn't finish reading this because I found the plot so depressing. The writing was good, but this was a very dismal book.

Sangat Mahfouz. Kekelaman yang ditampilkan terlalu sulit ditembus oleh kebahagiaan dan kegembiraan-kegembiraan kecil.

I wanted the best for each character in the book up to the very end...even the "bad" ones.
