I haven't read a Danielle Steel novel for many years and having been given this one, decided to give it a go. I was extremely disappointed! The opportunity to make this an exciting love story was passed by and a bland, uninteresting, repetitious effort produced instead.

I won't go into the plot as other readers have done that. I don't know where Ms Steel's editor helped, but he or she certainly wasn't alert. Countless repetitions about how Coco's sister hated her and bullied her - sometimes this...more

Coco Barrington was born into a legendary Hollywood family, her last name loaded with expectations. Her mother is a mega bestselling author who writes under the pen name of Florence Flowers and her sister, Jane, is one of Hollywood's top producers. They are not your typical family by any means...Jane has lived with her partner Liz, in a solid, loving relationship for ten years. Florence, widowed but still radiant, has just begun a secret romance with a man twenty-four years her junior. And Coco...more

I haven't read many of Danielle Steel's work but I've enjoyed tremendously the ones I've read. How I wish I can say the same thing to this one. The thing is, I can't! I found it so frustratingly shallow. Everything is superficial. Ugh! For one thing, it doesn't make sense for a man to fall so fast for another woman when he is supposedly still traumatized with whatever his psychotic ex-girlfriend had done, hence the running away and hiding.

The first time Leslie sets his eyes on Coco, he immediat...more

Coco is in her late twenties, has dropped out of college and is working as a dog walker to her family's dismay. Her sister immperiously commands her to house sit. OK, embarrassed to mention that I even read this. What happened was, I finished the book I took on holiday with me last week and I found that the hotel had a small library. Problem was, almost all the books were in Greek! This was about the only English book that I could find (other than one about child abuse, which wasn't very holiday-friendly). I didn't finish it while I was there, so brought it home with me, and will now have to send it back! I suppose that's how it got any stars at all - the...more

This book celebrates families. It's about three very different couples who struggle, survive, love, laugh, and learn to enjoy life. The main character is Coco Barrington. She moves into her sister Jane's house to dog-sit while she works through some personal failures.
It turns out there is an unexpected guest, Leslie Baxter, a dashing British actor. Their world's are very different but there is an instant attraction between the two. Coco gets to know Leslie not just as an actor but also the way h...more

Did not like this book. It was just a shallow read and I could easily predict the outcome. Wasted my money on this one.

This was a book given to me by a co-worker who always reads Danielle Steele. I needed a book to read to occupy my time, and since the other few I have read from her were decent for their genre, this was a safe bet. Like the others it was an easy read, but I ended up really enjoying it more than any of the others. I actually was very drawn to the characters and plot and continued reading until I finished the whole book in 1 day.

The book is about a woman who does not fit in with her family and he...more

I have mixed feelings about this book. The plot was interesting even though you know how it will end by the first couple of chapters. The irritating thing is DS is the queen of redundancy, and it (redundancy)stops the flow of the plot. She must think of every conceivable way to state something then uses every single one of them in her writing. Perhaps it's her way to develop depth of character because I did end up liking the characters. Or perhaps it is to stretch the length of the book, otherwi...more

this was an amazing book. This women in this book looses her husband and her son who had depression. Her son tried to take his life in his bedrooom. Her husband drove plans and was never close to his son. she convinced them to both go on a trip together and they both died a plane accident. Her and her daughter moved to a beach and she fell in love with a man who was almost as bad off as she was. He lost his wife and kids to his best friend (which at the end of the book you will find that the wom...more

There's something about a Danielle Steel book that's so recognizable as soon as you start to read it. It's something about her word choices that makes it so distinctive. I find that reassuring and comforting, although I suppose some people might find it boring. This then is a typical, lovely romance. It's fairly quiet and uneventful. The summary says that it's about 3 couples, all very different but from the same family. That's true, although the majority of the book is about one particular coup...more

lRead this for ARRT genre study. Hated it. The thing that amazes me most about this book was the list of "other books by this author." Who is reading this cr*p?

The story itself could have been mildly interesting but the writing was so awful that every few paragraphs I "noticed" the writing; as in, "that's the worst sentence I've every read" or "didn't she just use the exact same words to describe the exact same thing on the prior page?"

If this book is a true representation of Danielle Steel, th...more

It was full of petty romance. I mean, ick. I didn't want to read this, truthfully, but out of sheer boredom, since we were doing absolutely nothing, I decided to give it a shot. Didn't overly enjoy it but didn't exactly hate it. More on the borderline anyway. So, Mr. Big Shot, famous Hollywood star Leslie falls in love with beach-bound and utter failure Coco? Not exactly believable, even with the circumstances. Anyway, there's the signature age gap and sappy ending. For those who REALLY love Ste...more

As a reader, Steel spoke to me through her use of relationship building. She is a redundant, detailed and explicit writer...to which, the story was deliberately told and provided no sense of mystery. As I read, I felt a sense of sequence to her writing - although she isn't known for writing sequels, she seemed to repeat similar characters and scenes in this novel as she has done previously. The tone of this piece is romantic in language. Unlikely to repeat her form of writing, her overzealous co...more

I have mixed feelings about this book. I liked the two main characters Coco and Leslie. I understood both of them and understood their little quirks. I liked the way they met and the story line for their relationship. What I didn’t like was how at certain points in the book the suspense would build and build and right as you thought it was going to get going it would die. Very disappointing. Also it was very repetitive. I thought it undermining my integrity as a reader. I just felt like the same...more

I was so surprised how much I didn't like this book! I've not read Danielle Steele before, I tried reading Rogue but couldn't finish it. I can't put my finger on why I couldn't get in to this book, it was like she was saying the same thing over and over again....

Coco is a hippie....
Coco is JUST a dog walker....
Coco dropped out of law school.....
Leslie is too good for her....
Jane is a lesbian....
Florence is perfect.....

it just kind of grated on my nerves. I'm hoping this is just a fluke and I wi...more

This was a decent story, but pretty much the usual you get from a Danielle Steel novel. Her books are always about the "perfect couple", the "perfect child", etc. Everyone is always beautiful, perfect & rich. For some reason, I feel obligated to read all of her books. I don't expect much when I read one, but sometimes I am pleasantly surprised. One reason I think that I always read her books is because my grandmother loved her books and reading one makes me think of her. I also enjoy when th...more

I must admit that this is a beautiful love story. Coco is a rebel hailing from a family of achievers. A law school drop-out is now a dog walker and is constantly ridiculed by her successful mother and her lesbian sister for her lack of ambition. She then meets Leslie a major Hollywood star while house sitting for her sister. Not-so-suprisingly Leslie and Coco fall madly in love inspite of all the warnings Coco receives from her sister. Meanwhile her mother is dating a much younger man and her si...more

When Colette (Coco) Barrington was growing up, she was surrounded by the Hollywood lifestyle, with her father in the movie business and her mother a mega bestselling author. It is no surprise that her older sister Jane also grows up to join the movie game as a top producer.

But Coco wants nothing to do with that life. After graduating from Princeton, she begins law school at Stanford, but drops out and creates a dog walking business. A way to enjoy life on her terms. Unfortunately, her family dis...more

I think this book has some good parts to it...but all and all I guess as I am getting older and more realistic about life...I am finding DS books to be more fluff with time, I feel like she is recycling things that have happened in her life in her books but goes way left field about love life, and how romantic everything is...I am going to finish the book because I want to go down the list of books she has written, just for the fun of it...but her earlier books were so much more in depth and eve...more

Oh my! I don't know what possessed me to read another Danielle Steel novel. Maybe I forgot how syrupy and unrealistic they are or maybe I am too realistic to enter the world of Danielle Steel. This was a book I picked up free at a book exchange and I thought I was in the mood for romance, but quickly learned this book was not for me. Since I am a finisher, I perservered (quickly) to the end. No more Danielle Steel for me--there has to be a better way to escape!

Again, there are certain authors that I'm a totally dedicated reader of and Danielle Steel has been one of those authors for a long time. This book was pretty consistent with most of her books...a dysfunctional family who finally pulls their stuff together and life happily ever-after! Of course this one has some more modern twists to it...an over-achieving family. Her dad was a literary agent before he died, her mom was a famous author and is now in a relationship with a man who is at least 24 y...more

I can't believe she sells so many books! I totally could write this! That being said, I continued to read it even though my husband kept asking me "why are you still reading it if it's so bad?" Um...I was interested in what was going to happen; BUT; the writing was terrible. It was like reading a bad soap opera, and soap operas are pretty bad to begin with. Not a fan of Danielle Steel. Sorry Library Lady, I'm open to another suggestion though.

I am giving this book a positive, 3 star. If you are looking for an easy read, something light, this may be the book for you. The story line was light and romantic. The down side to this read for me was the constant reiteration of story. Okay, okay, we know that Coco loved Ian, that he was the love of her life. Do we need to hear it over and over within the first few chapters of the book. Do we need to hear that Coco just hates LA and movie stars over and over? Too much reiteration for me. Negat...more

Slowly working on my "Read all of the Standing Order authors project" - this was one of them because honestly as a librarian I had to know what Danielle Steel is like. Totally get the appeal - easy reads with love stories (though not too much sex), modern storylines, characters who say what we want them to, and a satisfying ending. In the same time it took me to read 50 pages of Madame Bovary I read this entire book. I get it.

Coco Barrington is considered the black sheep, or unachiever, of her family of talented people, her mother being a very successful author, her sister a producer, who both are very free with their thoughts about how badly Coco has done in life. While house and dog sitting for her sister, Coco meets Leslie Baxter, a very well known actor, and the mutual attraction soon turns into something serious. This is a relaxing, fun read.
Linda
Coco abandons her roots in LA and the privacy invasion by the press, and moves to a "hippy" beach. She walks dogs and is very happy with her life even though her Mother and Sister are always giving her grief. She meets Leslie, a major Hollywood star, and they fall in love. The problems they encounter because of his fame put their relationship in peril. In the end, she is able to overcome her fear, and they get married.

quotes#839312 from my notebook

"Next time you'll be wiser and more careful," Coco said quietly. "Don't beat yourself up. You learned something from it. We always do." p84
[not profound but useful to remember:]

Her mother sighed as she listened. It was as though they were whispering across the Grand Canyon - neither of them could hear the other, nor wanted to. p30

Since 1981, Ms. Steel has been a permanent fixture on the New York Times hardcover and paperback bestseller lists. In 1989, she was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for having at least one of her books on the Times bestseller list for 381 consecutive weeks. But Guinness was premature. The fact is that one or more of Ms. Steel's novels have been on the New York Times bestseller list for...more
