I really enjoyed this book and it gave me a lot to think about and ponder. "Totally American" is written by two people with interesting life experiences- Dan Smee is an Iraqi War Veteran who served as a combat medic. They both present a very human, down to earth, yet structured side to thier writing, which I identified with, and appreciated. Shoba Sreenivasan is a forensic psychologist who works for the V.A. The preface details Dan's life and his experiences which led to him writing this book. D...more

Both authors give personal testimonies, recounting their separate lives, experiences of growing up, maturing into adults, lessons they’ve learned through life, their work, loss, achievements, and those they’ve come to know along with way. They offer an easy to read self-help guide to the rewards of developing and exercising morals, core values, a positive “can do” attitude, in order to obtain our life goals. Some of the themes covered are: achieving fulfilment and success, changing a negative at...more

I thought this book was easy to read and understand. The authors provided plenty of examples to illustrate their points. It was also well laid out so that the reader does not feel overwhelmed by too much information at once. The principles that it teaches are uplifting and positive. The book leads you step by step toward gaining control over your negative thoughts using a simple to understand, no-nonsense approach.
