A cute story about a fiercely independent, stubborn, and somewhat indecisive little baby owl who doesn't want everyone to tell him he's cute, but still wants to be cute after all. Reminds me of my three year old! Our girls enjoyed this one immensely and my three year old 'read' it to herself again after we finished.
It’s about a little owl that wants to explore the woods but is repeatedly disturbed by inhabitants of the forest.
The owl is perceived by rabbit, fox and squirrel as a cute, fluffy and adorable owl. However, the owl doesn’t want to be perceived this way. He wants to be seen as a much stronger and a "sleek hunting machine". He becomes quite frustrated, about how the animals see him and confides in his mother. She agrees with him and just then after a thought baby owl switches his mind and instead...more

This was definitely the star of my birds story time--as soon as I was done reading it, one of the kids asked, "Can we read that again?" They loved telling me that the bird was, in fact, cute despite his many protestations to the contrary. They didn't really understand the ending with the mother and why the little owl was upset when she didn't say he was cute, but we talked about it and they still enjoyed the book anyway. I was surprised this went over that well--I tried his other book I'm Not Sc...more
This is a story about a baby owl who goes for a walk before bed time and is unhappy that everyone he meets thinks that he is cute, rather than the fierce and deadly hunter that he would like to think of himself as. It's an entertaining story which works both for children and adults, and the illustrations are perfectly adequate. I like the fact that it speaks to what I believe is a universal experience; the difference between the way we are seen and the way that we see ourselves (something that c...more
All of the animals who encounter Baby Owl think he is so cute, but Baby Owl doesn't want to hear it. He thinks he is a scary hunting machine and is quite irritated that the other animals do not see him that way. When he finds his mother, he tells her that all the animals think he is cute but he is not. She agrees with him. But then Baby Owl doesn't like that either. Suddenly he is arguing that he is indeed cute. Mama Owl sees that Baby Owl is very tired and thus begins their bedtime ritual.

Perfect book for my six year old son. Although there are not many words and it is somewhat below his reading level, it exactly mirrors his feelings on most days. Baby owl doesn't want to be called cuddly and fluffy and cute and the more he is called it the madder he gets. After his tantrum I love the look on his face when his mom tells him he is tired and it is time for bed. Priceless, because it is exactly what happens nearly every day. A great book for young children, especially those who are...more
A darling little story about a little owl that is tired of everyone calling him cute and little, “I am not cute!” I am a huge, sleek hunting machine with great big see-in-the-dark eyes” Then baby owls mother comes along and knows the right thing to say to baby owl.
This is a simple, cute, story, but I love it. It shows that sometimes moms do know the right things to say, I just hope this will continue to the teenage years, "I doubt it"!

A laugh out loud cute picture book about a baby owl who hates that everyone treats him as a cute, cuddly bird instead of a predator. That is, until he is being tucked into bed by his mommy. Wonderful for preschool, kindergarten and first grade read alouds. Like Mo Willems' tales, this one has an epic tantrum that will be fun to act out during story time.
Appeal Characteristics: cute baby owl drawings, storyline
I am all those animals that are like "OMG! AREN'T YOU THE CUTEST" and the boy just stares at you like...if I didn't have manners I'd punch you for saying I'm cute. So all you have to do is rephrase it to their liking: "You are a cute velociraptor, and the kid EATS it up."

I thought this was a very cute and funny book. It is an easy read and could be used for K-1st grades. I enjoyed this book because a baby owl gets upset when the other animals always just call him "cute." He wants to be called something different like huge, scary, sleek, and sharp-eyed. When the baby owl's mom finally does call him those things he decides that he is cute after all and doesn't like those other names. This book uses dialogue throughout the story and shows emotions through words. It...more

Little owl doesn't want the other animals to call him cute, he wants to be seen as an efficient hunting machine. By everyone that is, except his mother. But really he is just getting crabby through tiredness. Fortunately his mother knows exactly what to do.

This book is great to read to your students who are having trouble with their appearance and feel as they look bad. This will help give them the confidence to feel good about themselves.
The UK has a "Bookstart" scheme for young children, under which they are given books at 9 months, 2 years, and 3.5 years. I'm Not Cute was one of the two books in Little Cherub's 2 year old book bag (along with crayons, a blank drawing book, bookplate stickers and a number frieze). A baby owl insists he is *not* cute, whatever anyone says ... until his mother agrees with him! This is a very simple - and cute - book, with text that toddlers will understand even if they are not used to being read...more
