Written to introduce those individuals who are considering entering the priesthood, or some sort of spiritual life, to the mystical teachings of St. Ignatius on spiritual discernment and knowing God's will. It is oriented, ultimately, toward understanding one's vocation in relationship to God and to Christ, but de Mello recognizes the value of other spiritual traditions and teachings, as well as his training as a psychologist, and draws on all of these modalities to illustrate his point. Namely,...more
I was raised a Catholic and even though I attended Francisian schools I was aware of de Mello's work. I particular like the first one of silence. I think we have so much constant input today that silence is a lost art.
I agree with one of the other reviewers - one of my qualms with the book is there is a lot of text on cheap paper. In the introduction of the book the editors remarked how they they edited the information down. Therefore, I was amazed to read through the book and see that the the...more

The dearly departed Fr. Anthony De Mello S.J. left a legacy for the Church, lay people, secular humanists, even atheists--his work is that all encompassing in scope taking in as it does pretty much every facet of the human condition--that I doubt he himself would be he either happy or sad if he were around to see the huge reaction today. As he vigorously notes in his equally titanic work Awareness: The Perils and Opportunities of Reality: "Approval is the drug which we have been injected with fr...more
I read this book during lent and really enjoyed it. I won this through Goodreads giveaway program and was excited to delve in. I'm not sure how people can get through this book in just a day or two. I personally believe this is not a book to speed through, but to really take your time and walk through it slowly.
I knew nothing about Ignation teaching before reading this book and have never done the excercises that the book is about, but I still got a lot out of the book and am now leaning toward...more

A very thought provoking book that leads one to think about their own spirituality, their own relationship with God; it helps you to slow down and listen for God's voice in your life. Written as advice for novice spiritual leaders and those interested in St. Ignatius' spiritual exercises, it doesn't go through the exercises specifically but helps one to form the frame of mind and attitude to practice them. He points out the pitfalls many overzealous people fall into which totally undermine the g...more
This is one of those books that should be read slowly, so you can think and contemplate the ideas. Being raised Catholic, I have been exposed to much of this teaching and philosophy. I will take many thoughts from this book, but the one that will stay with me is that "love ought to manifest itself in deeds rather than words." Comprehensive back matter which is helpful and invites further study and research.
