Perhaps the most popular of all Sherlock Holmes stories, The Hound of the Baskervilles combines the traditional detective tale with elements of horror. When Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead on the wild Devon moorland with the footprints of a giant hound nearby, the blame is placed on a family curse-and it is up to Holmes and Watson to solve the mystery of the legend....more

Doug Cannon
My Grandpa Cannon loved this story, and he often told of a time when he went to see a "picture show" about the Hound of the Baskervilles. "It scared the willies out of me," he said, and then he and his friend had to part ways as my grandpa rode his bicycle home in the dark.

He was thinking about this devil-hound, and then he heard something panting behind him. He pedaled faster and faster, but the panting only got faster and faster too. Then, it was harder and harder to pedal, and his bike was go...more

I love Sherlock Holmes. I love his name, I love his clothes...I just love his style. Reading The Hound of the Baskervilles...I felt like I was reading the first detective novel ever written. Doyle defined the genre--he was the first and the best.

My nine-year-old daughter loves Sherlock Holmes. She has a little Sherlock Holmes hat that we bought for dress as your favorite literary character day, and she loves nothing more than to put on her little brown trench coat from Target, suck on her plasti...more

This is definitely my favorite Sherlock mystery. It has everything, Sherlock with his incorrigible behavior, Watson getting a bit limelight for a change, their interactions, horror, and mystery.

It's hard to believe that I've never read Doyle's most famous Sherlock Holmes tale until now. I don't even know why I've been putting this off, the short stories that I've read about the well-known detective and his sidekick Dr Watson were pretty good but this little novel has remained on my "to read" list for years. And I found The Hound of the Baskervilles a really enjoyable little story, at times very creepy and at others balanced out with humour. The mystery kept me guessing until the end, e...more

I am a big fan of any writer who is capable of creating powerful and memorable characters in literature. And Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is no exception. His work on other books may also be quality but it is Sherlock Holmes who will always be remembered. And for good reason. The man is brilliant, eccentric and also flawed in slight ways morally and ethically. He's intriguing, he's slightly dangerous, he's obsessive... Is there no adjective you cannot throw at the blended mix that is Holmes? If I were...more

The ultimate tale of the ultimate Victorian hero, The Hound of the Baskervilles is a true masterpiece of the mystery genre, and quite possibly remains the finest mystery novel ever produced -- even if its first appearance was serialized in Strand Magazine.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's unforgettable hero Sherlock Holmes matches his wits against what appears to be a centuries old curse and the ghostly hound that exacts vengeance on the Baskerville ancestors for Sir Hugo Baskerville's sadistic misdeeds...more

The good thing about any Sherlock Holmes book, is that the story doesn't revolve only around some mystery. You can't help but realize the richness of Arthur Conan Doyle's fiction, which makes the Holmes mysteries distinguished from many others. Focusing solely on the mystery (not necessarily a bad thing) increases the chance of the book being forgotten as soon as another comes out. This evidently doesn't happen with the Holmes mysteries, which makes their namesake one of the most memorable chara...more

Review of The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Shelf: Mystery/thriller/noir,Bookshelf from my childhood & teenage years.
Recommended for: Sherlock Holmes fans.

4*actually on a fresh,adult reading.
The Hound is a gothic mystery & the most famous of Doyle's four Holmes novels.
Its plot centres on a supposedly supernatural occurance pitted against Holmes' supremely rational mind which believes "The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes."(P.24...more

_The Hound of the Baskervilles_ is probably one of the more famous cases of Sherlock Holmes and is also one of only four novel-length treatments of the cases of the great detective. It’s a solid story and is perhaps primarily of interest in the apparently supernatural element which lies at the heart of the case. Indeed this element of the tale, along with its ultimate resolution, is very interesting when viewed in the light of Doyle’s subsequent conversion to spiritualism and when looked at from...more

I just finished teaching this book, and it gave me a new appreciation for the vocabulary and structure of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I was a little nervous about teaching this to 6th graders, as the vocabulary is difficult, and the story is intricately woven together, and can be confusing for younger readers. But as always the girls fell in love with Watson, and were amazed at Sherlock's ability to piece together this puzzle.

This story is set in London and the English countryside of Dartmoor in the...more

Definitely, reading an e-book in bed this is not a good idea– I kept falling asleep and that’s why it took me so long (more than a month!)to finish a novel that had all the attributes to make a very quick reading .

Anyway, what I love about classic detective stories (I would so like that English have a word as suggestive as the Italian “giallo” to name this kind of fiction) is that what you see is what you get. Of course, you need perspicacity and attention, but it’s a trama thing – not a stylis...more

Having completed my nth reading of Arthur Conan Doyle’s, The Hound of the Baskervilles, not having read it for a decade or two, I was once again charmed, realizing yet again why the Sherlock Holmes stories have been so enduring for so many readers. This time around I was more aware of the occasional tiny and subtle clues that Doyle, in the person of Watson, provides about Holmes’s personality. Why has this curious figure so captivated readers for more than a century? He is cool, indeed rather co...more

I re-read The Hound of the Baskervilles, which is a terrific story. I read it many years ago and have seen various versions on TV, so I knew the general story. It was a great choice because my workload was pretty intense this week.

The story is one of the most famous of the Sherlock Holmes tales. The mystery is well-done and keeps the reader guessing. The setting on the moors is creepy - I can't imagine spending one night there, let alone living there ... even without "the hound". The characters...more

“It came with the wind through the silence of the night, a long, deep mutter, then a rising howl, and the the sad moan in which it died away. Again and again it sounded, the whole air throbbing with it, strident, wild and menacing.”

I remember reading that paragraph like it was yesterday. Alone in my dark room shining the light from the screen of my phone onto the page in order to see those words. Sleep deprived and blood pumping from a strange mixture of exhaustion and excitement. I needed to ge...more

In the book The Hound of the Baskervilles Holmes and Watson is meeting the successor of his uncle Sir Henry Baskerville and Dr. Mortimer. They were first discussing what to do in the Hall and after they discussed it, Sir Henry and Dr. Mortimer went and Holmes followed them. When they were following them they saw that a spy is following them to and so they decided that they should track down the spy but they failed to track the spy. The next day Holmes told Watson that he wouldn't be coming with...more

Sherlock Holmes and The Hound of the Baskerville

I think that the Sherlock Holmes series are amazingly written, with fantastic descriptions of characters and places. The mysteries in the books are full of tiny clues that are very intricately and well pieced together.

The fact that the text is written in first person makes the reader feel really close to the action, and this means that the mystery is closer to you and it makes you feel like you are there, solving the problem with them. Because th...more

I think the writing in this was pretty good, but I felt like he wasn't trying that hard to create a real mystery. There are no red herrings in this book, which is surprising, and in almost every instance where someone is being suspicious, they are. Some things are too obvious and you figure out right away what roles most of the characters are playing. I think it does give a good sense of Arthur Conan Doyle's writing style in general, and I believe this was towards the end of his career... perhap...more

Highly enjoyable! Although admittedly I read Hound... again because of a new interest in Sherlock Holmes after the latest movies and tv shows came out. I feel shame. But hey, it got me reading Conan Doyle once more, so that's what's important, right?...Anywho, what struck me the most was the humor. I'd forgotten about the author's lighter side. And the horror aspect still affected me on at least some level, which is impressive considering I'd read it before when I was a kid and also because I do...more

Truly a great mystery that you can't put down because you're anxious of what will happen next. Arthur Conan Doyle is a genius.

Another horrible book that my teacher forced me to read. I thought it was very boring. Mostly because of how old it was and the old setting of the whole story.

Holmes goes to the moors

There are two things that strike me as unique about ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ at least when compared to the stories in ‘The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.’ One is that the change of setting to the fog-drenched moors casts a different light on the proceedings. The other is that in this story there is a lengthy portion in which Watson is the primary on stage participant and detective. Holmes returns earlier than we realize initially but even taking that re-entry into...more

Believe it or not, this was actually the first of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books I had ever read. Somehow I just missed them growing up, along with Star Wars and learning to like coffee. But finally, after Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey, Jr.'s two outings and the brilliant BBC series Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch, I picked up my girlfriend's copy of The Hound of the Baskervilles and set off making up for lost time.

Clearly, I'm glad I did.

It's not that I hadn't expected much from the worl...more

It has a boat load of what I call "Ye Olde English". From what I understand there is a family called the Baskervilles haunted by a mysterious hell-hound on the moor of Devonshire. Sherlock and Watson and set on the case. The legend goes that long ago a man named Sir Hugo Baskerville was claimed by the devil. He was in love with the daughter of a farmer and one night he stormed into her home and captured her. She was locked away in one of the many rooms in the Baskerville mansion. She wept and we...more

The sudden death of Sir Charles was quite the mystery however the whole riddle of events and fear did not stop there. This definitely became a case for the "world's best sleuth", Sherlock Holmes.

A curse haunted the Baskerville family line. Ever since the fateful night when Hugo Baskerville schemed up the death of a fair maiden who refused to be his, fear captured and gripped the land. However, the fear seemed to subside with time...that is until the death of another Baskerville, Sir Charles. Nig...more

Arthur Conan Doyle was born the third of ten siblings on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Charles Altamont Doyle, was born in England of Irish descent, and his mother, born Mary Foley, was Irish. They were married in 1855.

Although he is now referred to as "Conan Doyle", the origin of this compound surname (if that is how he meant it to be understood) is uncertain. His baptism record...more
