I read this just before I made a (legal) trip to Cuba. It provided a clear and concise overview of the history of US-Cuba relations. No matter how you spin it, the US' policy toward Cuba since Kennedy is frivilous, inhumane and hypocritical. You don't have to have a positive opinion of Castro or his policies to reach that conclusion -- the facts are that Cubans have more democracy than the Chinese, better health care than millions of Americans and a better educational system than most countrie

Erikson does a great job of bringing the different angles of current Cuban/American conflicts to light, yet his explanation of a movement to end the embargo outside the Cuban-American community is really lacking. He does not focus as much on this push to bring Cuban/American relations closer.
