This little book is more of an introduction to topics in recent Hawthorne studies than it is an introduction to Hawthorne's work. It is NOT directed towards readers with little or no experience reading Hawthorne. The focus, rather, is placing Hawthorne's work in its own 19th century time and showing the influence of contemporary events and ideas on Hawthorne's writing.
