Over the past few years I've only had the chance to read a handful of adult science fiction authors. L.K. Rigel, Laura Jennings, and now Kelly Beltz. What these books all have in common are stories that focus less on the science and more on the characters and plot.

At nearly 500 pages, Beyond the Stars: Kataria was the longest of these. And so, had the most characterization, the most adventure, and the most plot. It follows Samantha (or Sami as she likes to be called) from her very first day work
Landing the job of her dream in research and development at the Space Island Group (SIG), Samantha Gerris finds herself doing what she has always wanted to do and all with her feet firmly on the planet Earth. While others made SIG a career so that they could go into space, Sami was scared of flying even after meeting an almost perfect man who happened to be a pilot. Marriage and two kids later, Jack Bennett finally got his chance to go into space leaving Sami and the kids on Earth, then a tragic ...more

We’ve built on Earth and now it’s time to build above it. Samantha Gerris works for a company that has been charged with building a space resort. It will be reached via an elevator/launch pad system to ferry passengers to an all-inclusive space resort. With this new idea, new technology must be invented. New jobs and fields are to be had. And everyone wants a piece of this history.
The book begins with Samantha coming from school and being hired into a plum position with the company tasked with b

I read a lot of Science Fiction and often find that the story gets so bogged down by the science that the characters don't get fully developed. Thankfully, in the book "Beyond The Stars: Kataria" author Kelly Beltz manages to deliver a well balanced novel full of adventure, romance, and suspense with fleshed out characters that I actually cared about and related to.

Samantha Gerris is doing the one thing she swore she would never do, traveling into Space to assist with the completion of the spac

Recommends it for: Romance readers who like some science fiction
Shelves: first-reads
I started reading this book thinking it was a science fiction book with a love story of some sort. Turned out to be a romance book with a lot of science fiction in it. As it was not what I was expecting, this was a bit disappointing, but that is a personal thing. If I had know what I was getting in to, I think I would have rated it higher.

The writing is solid and the author clearly has done some science research. This made the few times she flubbed something all the more startling. Nothing major
This is a scifi adventure with some romance & I think I liked it. Okay, I liked the scifi adventure part more than the romance. The beginning really dragged for me as we get to know about Sami's life before this big trip to the space resort that she's embarking on. It was a big flashback of her life from her first day at work on the project to the moment we meet her in the opening. It documented her meeting her husband, getting married & having a family well enough but it wasn't very exc ...more

Okay, so I went back and gave this book another chance. What I found out is that the story actually gets interesting later on. If you're going to read this book, I suggest that you skip chapters 2 through 10. They go back into the past and show how she met her husband. It was very boring to me. No sci-fi, just romance. I'm not a romance fan so I actually stopped reading the book because I figured it would continue on its boring course. Thankfully it gets into the sci-fi and adventure later. It s ...more

I'm not sure if this is a romance in a science fiction setting, or a science fiction book that includes a lot of romance. Either way works well. I appreciated the first person narration of main character Samantha. It allowed me to bond with her quickly and I enjoyed her perspective. I also enjoyed the amount of scientific background (including the illustrations), level of adventure, and discretion in the sex scenes. While I find the Katarians similarity to humans unrealistic, I realize this is t ...more

Very enjoyable sci-fi adventure! Samantha Gerris has always preferred the safety of having her feet firmly on Earth. When she finally agrees to follow her family to the spaceport, she suddenly finds herself on an alien spaceship and off to many adventures - with a 'hunky' alien! Kelly Beltz's novel progresses at a fast pace combining space technology details, adventure and romance into the entertaining story.
It will be interesting in a few years to look back and see if many of the space developm

Well written - Kelly Beltz painted the characters, action, and places so they easily materialized in my mind's eye as I was reading. Excellent plot with unexpected turns to keep me holding the book in front of their face for 'just a few more pages'. Nothing required an engineering degree to decipher - just an active imagination prompted by the words was all that was required. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
Mild violence and sexual situations.
