I'm not usually one to read someone's letters or memoirs. So it's my own faults, and not necessarily those of this book, that led me to a 3 star rating. I found the first half of Miller's letters interesting, and the second half a little repetitive.
There were a few real gems, however. For example, when a leader pushes people too hard, what he is inevitably trying to do is "to prove himself or herself and own the ministry." Ouch. Guilty.

This book should be in every home - for parents, pastors, teachers, and "leaders" of all kinds. Reading "real" letters to real people is much more powerful than a book on "leadership", or at least, this should be a companion book to go along with such books. Jack Miller's suffering, humility, compassion and wisdom puts real feet on his words. He has had a hugely positive impact on me and my thinking about leadership. This is clearly a man who loved God and knew ...more

I am reading this for class and I love it. The book is a collection of letter that Jack Miller wrote to people under this care through his time as a pastor, missionary, church planter. This is one of my new favorite books. I highly recommend it.
I love this book! Jack Miller's pastoral heart really shines through in his letters. He gives his readers wise advice and is able to tell them things that might be difficult to hear, but he always seasons his words with love and humility.
A must read for pastors... a treasure of pastoral insight, sensitivity, and wisdom.
Great book on serving as a leader, focuses on prayer and the life of ministry.
Went through parts of this this spring (2008) in my small group. This is a collection of letters from Miller; his daughter provides some context for each. I appreciated both his thoughts on the particular issues he was addressing as well as being able to see more general aspects of his approach to ministering to people. (One example that stood out: in one letter I recall him saying he would be praying for the recipient, while he also asked that the recipient be praying for his praying.)
The practical wisdom in this book is some of the best I've read. The warmth and humility of Jack Miller combined with his focus on the atoning work of Jesus and seriousness of sin is a rare combination. His letters to people in conflict, in suffering, church-planting, wrestling with sin, dealing with life's difficulties are all worthwhile for every reader. I wholeheartedly recommend this as you will be challenged, humbled, convicted, and wonderfully encouraged.
So Miller is one of the most beautiful letter writers I have ever come across. There is so much personal, so much truth, so much "alongside of" ministry that happens, it is a beautiful testimony speaking truth in love in written form. Some of these letters have changed my understanding of ministry.
Such good, wise pastoral advice... and nice to read in a letter format because you know it is beeing applied to specific situations.
