Two voices play up the drama in this humorous story about selling an old car. Children give rapt attention to the rhyming text, the word bubble asides, and the predictability of the repeated phrase, "I know!". Children respond well to large motor movements in story time. Invite them to make hand motions such as circular polishing, back-and-forth painting, arm-length hose-spraying, and so forth.
Tension mounts as the crocodiles appear on the scene. After the story we chanted the action verse:

On the front cover of this book are five little monkeys that are washing a car. They appear to be having a wonderful time. The illustration on the cover is inviting and makes you want to open the book. The book is illustrated using watercolors and double page spreads. There are many details within the illustrations that make you continue to look at the pages for sometime. I would use this book to teach counting, sequencing, and what comes next. This would be a good book to read to young children...more
Eileen Christelow, Five Little Monkeys Wash the Car (Clarion, 2000)
I always knew that when Eileen Christelow got away from straight nursery-rhyme retellings these Five Little Monkeys books were going to get good. This one confirms my suspicions quite nicely, as Christelow comes up with a fun plot and adds it to the usual zany antics of the monkey children. Mom wants to sell their rattletrap old car, but it looks a mess, so the kids decide to wash it. And, of course, washing it isn't quite enough...more

This is from a wonderful series that entains children easily. I liked this one because it made me giggle a bit. My kids loved the monkey's and how they did things. I liked how the story was about helping out mom so a lesson can be taught here as well. Cute and intertaining pictures. This series of books by Eileen Christelow really should be in every young childs personal library.
This is a cute rhyming book to read with kids. It can also be used for predicting because the book continuously presents different problems and one of the monkeys wills ay "I know." The next page goes on to show how they solved the problem. It could also be used to teach problem and solution.

I really enjoyed reading this 5 little monkeys book. It is a very humourous tale of the five little monkeys trying to help their mom sell the car. It has very colorful illustrations and keeps you laughing through the book.
