The only reason I gave this book 4 stars is that I am tired of reading books by Christian authors who glamorize the characters - "she" is always young and extremely beautiful and "he" is always young and terribly handsome. Not everyone who falls in love in the real world are beautiful and handsome nor young. I expect this from secular authors but don't understand why it has to be prevalent in Christian books.

This book blew me away. With the last novel I read of Karen's, Between Sundays, she won me over totally. With this book, I am an official fan. This story is something that is so hard to talk about and with the honesty and realness she wrote with, I felt like almost like I was intruding in their business. This is the best book I have read so far this year. There is a lot of mystery that makes you not want to stop reading it until the end. The struggle is that the characters have to make the right decisions. They couldn't do that when they were young. They are trying to move on but their past won't leave them alone. I didn't really have any high expectations for this book. I'm kind of getting over Christian fiction, as much as I used to love it- most Christian books are getting too shallow and happy-ending and everyone's rich and life is perfect because of Jesus like. This book had an element of that to it- stunning good looks, big houses, really blah names (I mean, Brad and Laura and Emma? They were cool... 50 years ago) you know the deal. I am none of the above. I am a Christian and though the subject matter of this book, abortion, is quite hard to read sometimes, the focus is not about abortion debate. It is about the infinite power of a loving God to heal, reconcile, and forgive.

A young love that falls prey to a weak moment results in a decade of guilt, misery, sorrow and pain. The story of Emma Landon and Brad Cutler is one of a lives changed by an irrevocable decision.

Can Jesus, a loving God, bring healing after an abortion? Can we fall so deeply into sin that Jesus cannot reach us to forgive and heal? If we cannot bear to remember our pain, face it and confess it, can we live our lives as if it did not happen?

Many other reviews are posted with the storyline of this novel so I won’t include it in this review. It is better that I should discuss the importance of this novel for how it provides a true picture of how lives are changed.

Abortion is not something discussed at family gatherings or other ‘friendly’ conversation and oftentimes men and women live with the hurt, the pain, the shame, and the guilt without an outlet to release them, even to God. But, God is ever present waiting, watching, and wanting to forgive if we only read II Chronicles 7:14.

This story tells of the ‘mental conversations’, the ‘walking shame’, and the ‘lifetime of self-judgment’ that those who have shut down the life of their child at the altar of their own plans for the future truly feel. I have no doubt that even those who support abortion have these feelings but deny them. Perhaps, it is these feelings that drive their anger.

This is a book whose time has come. Few authors approach this topic. Reading of the author thoughts, I find that she might not have written it had God not prompted her, which is a miracle of God’s providence alone.

I recommend this book to men and women who would care to know the Truth about the inevitable consequences of abortion and those who have had an abortion as well because it give voice to their own thoughts and allows them to identify with the characters and prompts them to seek healing and forgiveness from the living, loving most high God.(less)

Brad, moved on and away from N. Carolina and emma and started climbing the ladder of an ad company where he met the bosses daughter, Laura James and fell in love and was 6 weeks away from being married when he got stuck on a ad campaign for "Kotton Kids," clothing and blankets for babies. After quiet contemplation he confessed to his fiance that he needed to "close the chapter with emma" before he could start one with her and gave her the details of his past. She wasn't happy to say the least, but while he is gone over the weekend to make his restitution she finds that she isn't being fair to Brad and chooses to forgive him. Brad, meanwhile finds Emma, and after breaking down the walls she has set up, they both grieve the death of their daughter and what could have been and apologize to each other, Brad for walking away and only thinking of himself and Emma for not standing up for herself and her daughter but going along. They find a healing in confessing their sins to God and say good-bye for the last time. Emma moves on and opens her heart and mind to the possibility of loving again always remembering that brad and her used to be the same but time changed them, him like the sky and her like the sea, both blue but different shades. Important lesson learned: life is to be celebrated and that life is precious. True and complete forgiveness and peace come from God. (less)

I like the reminders to lean on the Lord and listen to His voice.

Not so many perfect Christians in this story but there are still problems with them.

She loved Brad with all her heart, and he loved her just as much. Until she got pregnant. Then his feelings for her just left and he didn’t want to ruin his life and mess his life up, it’s like he’s rather ruin her life by making her have an abortion. She didn’t want Brad to stop loving her so she decided to do what he thought was best so he wouldn’t leave her. But it turns out that he left her anyways. He would have, no matter what decision she would have made.
My favorite character is Emma; she is just a calm laid back girl with a rough past she wants no one to know about. I can’t even imagine all the pain she has gone through her life, from having the love of your life just walk away unexpected to having your mother die a few years later. She is such a strong person, yet she doesn’t see that. She is held back in the past and she just needs to let go but she can’t. She doesn’t think she’s good enough to even pray anymore. She thinks god hates her for what she did. But in all reality got will forgive her for what she has done. She doesn’t know that and can’t see that though. Also, even though Brad has pretty much ruined her life she has no bad feelings toward him, she is a good person who just deserves a second chance.
Shades of Blue has to be my all time favorite book. It shows that god gives second chances and people can chance. I recommend this book for anyone of any age. Girls could learn a good lesson from this book and they will probably cry while reading it.

I wonder who would be more disappointed: the person who picked up this book thinking they were reading Fifty Shades of Gray or vice versa.

This book isn't easy to rate. I like the basic premise of needing forgiveness and closure and the Wilmington/ Holden Beach setting. However, it seemed as if there were too many subplots, irrelevant details, and overwritten emotional appeal. My college creative writing prof would have crossed out over half of it.

I did enjoy reading this novel. Kingsbury isn't afraid to talk about the tough issues of today. The characters in the story seemed to reflect sincere emotions of a real person who had gone through the same type of thing.

Great book! So glad I got it from the library (yet had to wait a bit for one to become available).
I think I will be looking into more of Kingsbury's books to read.
The story was a quick read, and I enjoyed the Christian standpoint. Some references to the bible made me want to go run and get my bible out too.

This book drove me up a wall. I desperately wanted to enjoy it because it is based at Holden Beach, NC where we took family vacations. But I ended up being so disappointed. This was another great book by Karen Kingsbury. I love her books. She touched on a subject that most authors would run screaming from. It takes a great writer with a lot of compassion to write this story and get it right. The topic of dealing with an abortion 10 years after the fact was too emotionally draining for me. I can not imagine being in that situation, living with the grief and those emotions and also trying to move one. That's a loaded plot, for sure!

The book was well written like all of this author's but it was by far not my favorite. It took me a while to read, but knowing it's due back to the library on Saturday was the push I needed to finish it.

I would give this book 10 stars if it was possible. I can't completely express how much I fell in love with this book. Originally, it sat on my shelf for a year or so, but recently a woman convinced that I should give it a chance. I'm so grateful to her for giving me that encouragement. Karen is also a public speaker, reaching more than 100,000 women annually through various national events. Karen and her husband, Don, live in the Pacific Northwest with their six children, three of whom are adopted from Haiti.
