A wonderful fairy tale (I hate to call it fantasy, for that turns so many readers off) for all ages, set in today's Paris ... and also in the Paris/Versailles of the 17th century. The magical elements are unique and beautiful, and the Paris of both eras spledidly drawn (see Paris To the Moon by this author, about living in Paris as Americans w/ a very young child - also enchanting). This is a book about a war in Paris between the Windows and the Mirrors and an average boy who is selected as the king of the Window Wraiths. While I found it thoroughly entertaining, I think a middle reader would get lost or lose interest. It's a fascinating and adventurous story, but has so many tangents that it gets confusing. Much of my enjoyment came from Gopnik's references to Racine and Moliere and from already having a soft spot for Gopnik's prose. His target audience might not enjoy the allusions as much.

I couldn't finish this book. It starts off very promising, but then the plot develops into a confusing and unbelievable mess. Window wraithes vs. Evil mirror people? I just couldn't swallow it - and for a fantasy/sci-fi lover, that's saying something.

Probably not going to become a new york times best seller but still possibly one of the most original plots for a fantasy that I've read in a while. It's a shame that it's not a well-known book.

It was OK. The physics were confusing (to me, at least) but the Paris setting and historical content was interesting.
