I have actually read many of the books in the Junie B. Jones series with my kids and as a teacher. For a challenge this month I had to pick a read a banned book. I was absolutely stunned when I saw that this series has been challenged/banned. The reasoning is the writing and spelling is grammatically incorrect and provides a poor model for children who are trying to learn how to do these things. Well I sort of understand the challenge, but really, these stories are for kids just learning to read...more

Junie B. Jones is a rambunctious and outspoken little First-Grader. She seems to be having a tough time on her first day of First-Grade. She lost her bestess friend and had to find a new one. Her teacher was not so scary even if his name was Mr. Scary. She had to sit in the very back of the class and Tattletale May just would not keep her nose out of Junie B's business.

When it came time to read the blackboard she was not seeing the same words everyone else seemed to be seeing. Mr. Scary kept her...more

This was one of my all time favorite books growing up as a young kid. This book did indeed have a lot of drama in it. For example, one of her best friends Lucille has replaced her with two twins, Camille and Chenille. Lucille does not want to be bothered with Junie B anymore, because they were once best friends in kindergarden. Grace and Junie B. use to be bus buddies in kindergarden, and now Grace has replaced her with a girl named Bobbi Jean Piper. Junie B. Jones is now all alone and feels wor...more

Cute story!

Junie B. Jones is finally a first grader! She was very nervous. After her first couple of days of first grade, she did not like it. Then she found out she had to get glasses! That made it even worse for her. Finally, she shows everyone her glasses at Show and Tell. All her class mates liked her glasses! Then she decided that first grade wasn't going to be that bad after all!

Loved that this story deals with issues that younger children deal with. Young children don't have much to worry...more

Junie B. is kind of a bitch, isn't she, haha? But seriously, I wasn't as into the Junie B. series when I was a kid; during this time, I was reading Bailey School and Boxcar Children instead, and there are only so many sprawling YA series that you can be interested in at one time!

Picking up this one just to refresh my memory, I really was struck by the fact that Park didn't write Junie B. to be all that endearing. Her picking on May, and her less-than-pleasant temper was unexpected in a children'...more

I think this book was great because it had lots of drama. You are never be too old to read a young child’s book because. It can change the way you think of yourself and the world. It was also a good book because you can imagine and have a good imagination that is good for young children and people all sorts of ages. You should read this book because it shows that you sometimes need to watch your mouth and what you say. I also learned that you should pick good friends because they can rub off on...more

1.In this story, a main character felt sad because her friends from kindergarten made new friends and they didn't care about her when they became elementary school students. Have you ever experienced such a thing?
Yes, I did. When I became a high school student, I felt a little sad because my friends made a lot of new friends and we didn't really talk with each...more

The Junie B. Series has been a really good series to get my kids enjoying chapter books. I appreciate that about this series. Also I've heard the magic tree house series is good. Anyone else know of any good ones for 6ish year olds?

Junie B. is finally a first grader. She is not too excited about this though, considering none of her kindergarten friends want to talk to her on the bus or in class. Junie learns to make some new friends including Lennie, Herb, and Jose. Mr. Scary is their new teacher in Room One. She gets to write in her journal about her new experiences in the first grade. One day, Mr. Scary realizes Junie B. may need glasses and sends her to the nurse. Junie is very mad at them both for confirming her eyes a...more

I just finished reading this book to my second graders today and they loved it. The Junie B. books are so fun to read to kids because you can really get into character. It is a great book to use to teach kids to read with expression. The kids really pick up on the expression. In the book Mr. Scary raises his voice to a student when tey are not doing what they should, so I raised my voice when I read that part. One of my students commented that that is what I sound like when I get really mad. (ha...more

Okay, at first I was worried about poor Junie B., but I soon became engrossed in the troubles she was having in first grade. Glasses! How wonderful that her real, new friends support her in her new, seeing-from-the back-of -the-room persona! It may a little predictable that her new friends are all male and/or HIspanic, but there you go. The snarky girlfriends are shed at an early age--thank the heavens! A very strong, childish voice makes this text a real gem. Punctuation is modern, as is the us...more

This is an American book. I can't say I took to Junie B, I found her a bit aggressive. Also a child on their first day at school is unlikely to be able to read, write AND spell - particularly words like 'muscles'. I liked the glasses side of the story though, and I think some bits would make kids laugh. My youngest didn't like the book, so that's put me off reading it to any other children. My favourite bit of the whole book was from a child to the author who said,'I love your books! You're a ve...more

Ok, so Christian and I have gotten Junie B out of Kindergarten into 1st grade, to his delight. "I'm in first grade too!!!"

Sadly, Junie loses a little of her hilariousness in first grade. Also, what happened over the summer to allow her and her classmates to arrive in 1st grade with a 3rd or 4th grade writing, spelling and reading comprehension ability? Talk about giving young readers a complex!

Oh well - she's still funny and relevant and very readable for bedtime chapter books.

I love all of the Junie B Jones books! They are chapter books and are good for developing readers, or for class read alouds.

In this book, Junie B begins first grade. She has to make new friends, and isn't so sure that she likes first grade. Then she finds out that she has to get glasses and is very upset. She brings them in for show and tell and one of her new friends tells her how cool they are! Junie B decides that she may like first grade after all!

1) What did you think when you started to go to school?
I thought everything was fresh, because of new teachers, new place, new friends, so I felt excited.

2) What was the most interesting lesson in your elementary school?

I just finished reading this aloud to my kindergartener and first grader. They were entranced by the storyline and by the basic conflicts between the characters, but their attention did sag a bit in the last chapter. I haven't read every Junie B. book, so I can't be sure, but I seem to remember the kindergarten series being a little sillier and less angsty than this one was. Just me, perhaps?

I was a little sad to see Junie B. graduate to 1st grade. She was growing up, and that meant that, as in life, some of the things that were cute in a Kindergartner are not so cute in a 1st grader. It also meant that Junie B. stopped using some of the poor grammar and sentence structure that others might hate but that made me laugh out loud. She's still got spunk, though, and I still love her.

I can personally appreciate the grammatical errors and feistiness of the infamous Junie B. Jones. She is an honest, hold-nothing-back kinda gal who often gets a bad rap from traditional folk. I get her. I like her. I want six and seven year olds to know that language and grammar usage are allowed to break rules when giving their characters' voice. Why not? It worked for Mark Twain.

There are several things I both like and don't like about this book. First, it was really funny. At least I thought so. My kids didn't think it was. But then, they think knock-knock jokes are hilarious.

Junie has some attitude issues that as a parent I don't want my kids to emulate. I don't want them to think it's funny to call people names or talk back to their parents or to be rude to their peers.

Also, her grammar is very bad. It's funny (to an adult), but to a young child they wouldn't know i...more

Junie B. Jones finally is a first grader. But then she loses her friends and wants to back to easy old kindergarten. Then later on she starts getting things wrong and mixing up words. She goes to the eye doctor and they tell her she needs glasses. Everyone in her grade was surprise even May. Later on she likes the first grade and is very happy.
Sarah
I really enjoy the Junie B. Jones books and thought this one was hilarious. She always finds herself in situations that most students can relate to and has a quirky attitude to go along with it. This is great for a 1st grade read aloud at the beginning of the year or for students who want to read a chapter book while ensuring an apporpriate reading level.

This story is about a little girl named Junie B. who is just making the transition from kindergarten to first grade! A new class means a new teacher and new friends to be made, and in Junnie's case a brand new pair of purple glasses! The text and humerous pictures will have you laughing the whole way through. I would recommend all the Junnie B. Jones books.

A chapter book for beginners.

Junie B. is not very happy when she starts 1st Grade, but as she gets to know a couple of new friends, things start changing for her in a positive way.

I wish I had a Read Aloud session where I could read for first/second graders. I would love to read this book to them, and I have no doubt that they would enjoy it a lot.

Love, love these books. This one, I thought, would be helpful for kids struggling with being different (Junie B. needs glasses), or dealing with changes (starting 1st grade. Getting glasses).

My 7-year-old son has been begging for the Junie B. Jones books. We went to a friend's house and they had the series. My son almost cried. Precious.

This was a very cute and funny book and my former kindergarten teacher introduced me to the Junie B. books last fall and she reads these books out loud to her kindergarten students. I hope that when I a daugher someday she will like to read her books about Junie B. Jones. Junie teaches valuable lessons to any child at any age.

I am reading these as fast as I can along with other books that the girls are reading....Junie has started 1st grade and has discovered that her friends from Kindergarten have made new friends and she has to do the same. She makes friends with some boys who sit around her. But there is May who causes her a lot of grief and when she wears her new glasses for the first time, laughs at her. But her new friends like her new glasses and give her the support she needs to feel comfortable wearing them.
