My copy is actually a hardback, an ex-library copy, but I didn't see the need to introduce another version into the Goodreads list. I very much enjoyed the film that was shot from this, which has the same title.

The book is really good, with some really poetic writing. It's dated in places, particularly in what many modern readers would see as a very sexist ending. But overall, if you take some of the stuff tongue in cheek, it's a pretty good adventure. It's got quite a few different elements tha

Ja bērnus cilts vēl spēs atraž ...more

I remember from my childhood in Siberia, how we were queuing up for this book (in Russian), reading the copy until the cover was unrecognisable, giving each other two days to read it. I don't know how it would read now, but back then in the 70s it was one of the brightest impressions (considering the Inquisition-like censure in literature).

I remember reading this to death when I was much younger, having seen ads and read features on the movie. It sounded intriguing to me... but 30+ years later I still haven't seen it. Anyway, this is the story of Naoh who sets out to restore fire to his tribe after it is extinguished in a raid by a rival group. Adventures ensue, travelogues of the prehistoric world are enacted and the numinous is hinted at. It has a rather shaky beginning to the quest after a strong opening scene but the quest its ...more

I think that the book is very interesting and it's as good as the amazing film based in the book, although the final isn't as good as I imagined.

I'm pretty surprised that this mediocre book inspired such a great movie.

Fire good! Book.... bad.
Quest starts off with a tribe's fire. Quest over! Well, ok. The fire goes out. And the tribe must find fire. The leader pledges whoever finds fire gets the girl! So nerdboy grabs his lighter and... no! This novel tracks 3 warriors as they travel around finding the fire. They must combat lions, and tigers, and bears (Ahgoo!) Yes, Ahgoo. The hairy guy. They must not only face animals, but also different races of people - Neanderthals, Asians, Midgets, their own tribe, and e

An inferior novel that inspired a superior film. The character played by Rae Dawn Chong does not exist in the book, hence the love story between the Neanderthal and the Homo Sapiens, the whole point of the story (in the film) is absent. The narrative does have its moments of aesthetic success, but the author is frequently bogged down by minute and exasperating descriptions of chases, battles, and the lay of the land.

A book which I would recommend to either young or old. This is no adventure, this is life, once a time.
