I strongly recommend you read the previous books in the series (Magic to the Bone, Magic in the Blood and Magic in the Shadows) prior to reading this installment.
This book started out really slow. This installment didn't seem like the ones before it. There wasn't a lot of deep mystery to it to entice the reader along and Allie seemed to be a bit impotent with her magic. There seem to be a bit of a lackluster about the story. Still having a love and hate relationship with this series. All the Allie Beckstrom novels seem to blur together – it’s the same conflict here that we’ve been dealing with for the past few books. Her psycho dad is still stuck in her head, and she still needs to get him out. Grayson the necromorph is still causing problems. Davy the Hound is still following her around, and Allie still expects him to listen to advice that she’d never take herself. Jingo Jingo is still getting away with all sorts o...more
I hate to say this, but this installment of Devon Monk's Allie Beckstrom series didn't get me all excited or enthused or even heart-pitter-pattery... What the heck?? Did I wait too long between Magic in the Shadows and this? *sigh*
Anyway. Never mind me. Allie has trouble looming. Like, T-R-O-U-B-L-E trouble. Dad-in-her-head trouble. Apocalyptic-storm-heading-towards-Portland trouble. Zayvion-plus-Allie-equals-Soul-Complements-equals-go-nuts trouble. The-Authority-is-not-all-hunky-dory-kumbaya-si...more

I won a Magic on the Storm ARC, and it's my first Devon Monk read. Once again, I'm smacking myself in the head for waiting this long to read her books. I loved her writing, the characters and the plot. There were action scenes that completely floored me. I couldn't have stopped reading for any reason, short of the kids stabbing each other or the house exploding during these scenes.

After I had finished the book, I noticed that my thumbs were sore, very sore. The ending of this book was so engrossing that I was gripping the book open so hard, it was that intense, that my thumb joints are sore. All I can say is that I can glad I have the next book to dive right into.

Argh! Once again the begging was like walking through mud that’s up to my shins. I mean, I love Allie and Zay together and am usually all for tender moments and sex, but there were so many times when the scene would end and I assumed we’d move on to what was really important. Instead, we got every teeny tiny detail of what Allie needed to do. For instance, the whole chapter dedicated to going back to Allie’s to shower, while yes the shower was nice and the revelation about the whole Soul Complem...more

Do not pick up this book until you have read the previous books in this series!! There is some mention of what happened previously, but you'll enjoy this book more if you've read the first 3 books starting with Magic to the Bone!

A huge wild magic storm is coming and the Authority is gearing up to prevent anything bad from happening as a result. Greyson is in a cage under Maeve's inn but more aware and with more help then the others realize. Authority members from out of town come to help in the preparations for the storm, including Shame's supposed soul complement Terric. Chase frees Greyson and betrays the Authority and especially Zay by trying to kill him. Allie luckily has her 'pet' Stone to help her out a few times,...more
After two uneventful months, Allie and Zayvion get the phone call about danger they have been dreading. They knew the peace could not last with the Authority splitting into factions causing a brewing war, and something would bring everything to a head. What they did not count on was a Wild Magical storm to be brewing. In the last storm Allie tapped into it and saved Zayvion's life, but that came at a very steep cost, a month in a coma and almost cost her life. It is unusual for them to have prio...more

I have had a love hate relationship with Allie and her series. I find this new world of magic interesting and yet sickening all at once. It's very fascinating, this idea that when you use magic it uses you right back. I do have an issue with the way people use magic. I have said it time and time again, but I have a serious problem with the addict aspect of the series.

I picked this book up at the airport for in-flight reading. I'd rather start a series at the beginning but I have just bought the first two books of this series -- I thought this books was that good. I think I would like it even more if I truly understood the nuances that come from beginning the series at the beginning but you can, as I did, read this book as a stand-alone.

Observations: I truly disliked the first 1/3 of this book. It was slow moving, and boring as hell. Ok we get it already. Allie and Zavy are madly in lust with each other. As if we weren't expecting that to happen since the second book. The middle of the book got better knowing that this storm was coming and that there was going to be a huge battle within the Authority. Best character? Stone the animated gargoyle. Interesting new character I want to hear more about? Terric. Evil villian you actua...more
I loved the first two books in this series, but felt like the last one just sort of treaded water and might have been better as a novella (seriously, book three took place in the space of about two days!?). Book 4 is great, though, and is firing on all cylinders. Monk is back on my auto-buy list, and this one I'll re-read a few times before passing it on.

Allie definitely behaved herself better this time. I think she shouldn't be so knee-jerk reactionary about her dad, though. She could learn some very valuable things.
This one started pretty slow, which was a problem. But when it got going, it was pretty exciting. There is a cliffhanger and a lot of loose ends that need dealing with but the new characters introduced in the last book are an excellent addition and I enjoyed reading about them. This was an okay instalment. The first three quarters of the book were pretty average but the end was a great climatic scene. Be warned it has one stinker of a cliffhanger. You're going to want to have the next one in hand.
To be honest, if it were not for nearly every book so far ending in some kind of cliffhanger, I might have walked away from this series by now. There's nothing wrong with it, exactly, but it doesn't rock my world by any stretch of the imagination. This cliffhanger ploy is som...more

I was considering giving this 4 stars until I got to the ending. Total cliffhanger, nothing resolved- and I really don't like that. I feel personally that a series should have an overlying arc, but each book should have it's own story and a good portion of it should get wrapped up at the end. I realize that is just a personal preference, as are most of my criticisms of this book/series. I also feel like I'm more forgiving of a cliffhanging ending if I'm really into a series; I just kind of like...more
I absolutely loved the last book Magic in the Shadows, but Allie is becoming a bit annoying. I just don't understand her reasoning behind not trusting her dad, he's proven himself time and time again. Sure she is being possessed against her will but he has saved her life multiple times.
**POSSIBLE SPOILERS** She has a good relationship with Violet and her dad wants to keep Violet ( and baby) safe so he is not going to do anything to jeopardize her life. The I- Hate - My - Dad thing is getting old...more

I love this series. I will just open with that and have done with it. ... The characters are real. The magic system takes such a toll that using it is almost more than it’s worth. (Admit it – this is how magic would work in real life. Nothing is ever easy!)
We’re currently 4 books in and Allie still has no clue what the heck is going on. This is a beloved contrast to some (a lot) (most) other urban fantasies, where the heroine has it all figured out and has whooped the bad guy by the last page of...more

I really am enjoying these books. I quite enjoy the urban fantasy genre (or is it a sub-genre? Who knows). But, maybe because I'm reading the books so close together, little things are getting on my nerves. Like how incredibly repetitive Allie is. Yup. Got it that you sing "Miss Mary Mack" to calm your mind before you cast magic. Yup, got it that you hate elevators and are claustorphobic. Allie is finally learning some self defense and learning more about magic.

Number four in the Allie Beckstrom Chronicles - what's not to love? We have a continuation of Zavion and Allie's relationship (thankfully not too mushy), continued friendships with one of my favorite new characters Shamus.\, and the gargoyle Stone remains in the story. I love the gargoyle - I enjoy his quirks and all the little things that Devon Monk describes him doing. He (She?) is a great addition to the series. Almost makes me wish I had my own magical gargoyle. And Stone is very protective...more
These books are not top shelf urban fantasy like Jim Butcher, Rob Thurman or Patricia Briggs. But they are consistently enjoyable reads, several cuts above much of the magical muck cluttering the field. Allie Beckstrom is evolving as a character. Her relationship with her father is no longer knee-jerk teen rebel attitude. She is taking on more responsibility as defacto leader of the hounds, and is using her wealth to help her friends instead of rejecting it totally due to its source. In this ins...more
I just finished this, after having it on my Kobo for almost a month. (This is mostly because I was fairly sure it didn't come out until November of this year, and so I read the first three very quickly, then had to wait.)
I'm enjoying these more and more with each book. The plot is twisty and not predictable, and the rules of magic, while mostly finite, seem to grow and get more complex every time.

another amazing installment of Allie Beckstrom. this book let us see Allie fall into a routine with her life in the Authority as well as leading the Hounds. of course things cant stay calm for long.

Magic on the Storm is much better than the previous book in the series, but is no where near as good as the original book. Many series change from exciting action packed mysteries to long complaint fests, and this one is no different. If I love the characters then I don't mind, but I don't love the characters in the Allie Beckstrom world. The constant banter and the same old topics of conversation get tiresome quickly. There is a magical storm on the horizon and there are hound issues to deal wi...more
Another amazing installment in the Allie Beckstrom series - I find myself enjoying each book more than the last!
I really enjoyed Monk's insights into one of her newer characters; Shame. This author certainly has a way of painting a character's emotions and thoughts into every action. Allie's observations, coupled with these telling mannerisms, gives him an intriguing depth. He is far more than the smiling, brotherly figure of the previous book.

I think this series has really found its footing. I love the lead character in Allie and I'm loving the world of magic that we're slowly learning more about and the huge arc involving who killed her father and what exactly his plans were (or are since he's still around, dead or not). I love that while the relationship with Allie and Zayvion is important and yummy, it doesn't overshadow everything else going on in the books, but serves as a great catalyst for both of them to act at times.

RATING : 4.5 SHAMUS AND TERRIC STARS!!!
There is a mother of a storm coming and the Authority has to sort out what they are going to do about it. Hold on to your hats it’s going to be a bumpy ride. This storm could make or break magic as they know it. The hunger for the ultimate Power, can really turn a person to the dark side.
Shamus Flynn, what can I say but I love his character even more after this book. We are left wondering all the time about Terric and Shamus. Is this a Vis...more

Allie and Zayvion are in LOVE!! Of course, things can't (and don't) go smoothly.
Chase and Greyson are still are the prowl and searching for vengeance. Shame has a...Soul Complement? Wonder how that works out. Allie and Zay face more than their fair share of trouble with Allie acting as the hero to save Zay this time.
This story line just keeps getting better and better!!
