If you want a great overview on the political history of immigration in America, this is the book for you. At times it can be a little dense, but overall a pretty fascinating read (again only if you're into the topic).

While it claims to be an historical-institutional view of immigration reform, it is far more historical and far less institutional. It's a useful text, but it is far more descriptive than explanatory.
