Ah, the humble scarecrow...

Iconic denizen of the farmer's field. A straw man, possessor of tattered clothing, infinite patience, and a deep knowledge of the psychology and behavioral habits of our feathered friends.

Imagine if suddenly, that scarecrow were to come to life. That's exactly what happens in this story. This is one fellow who already has a brain in his knobby turnip head, and he soon acquires a servant in the form of a young boy named Jack.

Together they set out to have adventures, a...more

This is a delightful little story, for children and adults alike. A scarecrow is struck by lightning, and comes to life; he recruits a young lad named Jack as his personal servant, and having nothing better to do the two embark on a grand adventure, complete with an army episode, entrangement on a solitary isle, and even a love affair. All complete with fun illustrations, bringing the story to life and pointing out its dramatic and hilarious moments just on time. Obviously inspired by Cervantes,...more

Saya sebagai pembaca dirudu...more

This really is a wonderful fairy tale. It has all the good qualities of a classic fairy tale -- imaginative, journeys, adventures, colorful characters, and bad-guys who are obviously bad.

The young boy, Jack, has sense enough to know that everything is quite odd -- what with his master being a turnip-headed scarecrow -- but has the youthful imagination to go along with it.

If there is a down-side to this book, it's that it did get to be a little long. Perhaps one too many adventures for the scarec...more

i decided to read this book as i had ran out of good books and it was just sitting their on my one of my book selves. What also made me want to read it was the fact it was my Philip Pullman and i had enjoyed reading his other books.

The category that this book is in is a book that teaches you about a different time in history. It fits under this one as it is set back in the days of scarecrows, servants, castles and brigands. I love this book as it is a humored and witty read that I really enjoye...more

Ingin menonton sandiwara, ngotot ingin menjadi akto...more

Si Boneka Jerami dan Pelayannya.

Boneka Jerami : bodoh, tapi sok tahu

Seorang anak laki-laki bernama Ja...more

This strange little book is a cross between The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and the Wizard of Oz. A dying farmer makes a scarecrow and tucks a letter inside "to show where he belonged." The Scarecrow is struck by lightening and comes to life. He meets a small boy who has lost his family and home to marauding soldiers, and the boy, Jack, becomes the Scarecrow's servant. The two wander about the countryside having adventures. The Scarecrow is all wide-eyed innocence, while Jack is loyal and sma...more

I think that "The Scarecrow and his Servant" is a very good book even though it has no real meaning.

Jack is the servant's name and he helps the scarecrow out from a puddle of mud and the scarecrow has one leg missing so the scarecrow asked Jack to go and find another leg for him. Jack finds a leg for the scarecrow and brings it to him so Jack becomes his servant and they start going on adventures together.

I love Phillip Pullman and was delighted to find this book in Ireland last year, while on holiday .... I read this in the car to the kids as we drove around the countryside, and I have never had such rapt attention and giggling from the backseat. The kids loved it, I loved it and it was hilarious to read out loud! The scarecrow is just a regular old garden type til it is struck by lightening and rises, like a straw filled Frankenstein, to become a "man".... albeit a very proper and gentlemanly o...more

A scarecrow stands in a field and then, one day is struck by a lightning bolt. It fizzes through his whole body and brings him to life.

The Scarecrow soon finds himself a servant named Jack and off they go on many adventures while heading for Spring Valley.

Philip Pullman is one of my favorite authors. I love His Dark Materials and I've read some of his other books that I've greatly enjoyed as well.

This book is one I hadn't yet read and decided to give it a read. I wouldn't say that I enjoyed it...more

I don't know why I picked up this book to listen to on my trip but I did. This is a take on Don Quixote with the Scarecrow being the one fight for right and his sidekick a young boy who helps him get what he needs to succeed. It's a sweet story--with a happier ending than Don Quixote.

Boneka jer...more

Sedangkan sidekick-nya, Jack si pelayan,...more

The Scarecrow and His Servant is an absurd story but it is fun and light-hearted even when it covers the occasional unpleasant topic. These unpleasant topics are not adult or grotesque in any way, but rather have the ability to be blunt on occassions. This is masked I suppose by the madness and jovial absurdness in characters, and also in the occassional sentimental and touching moments as well, all combining to make the story realistic (as it can be) within the created narratiuve.

The story star...more

In the tradition of “The Wizard of Oz,” Philip Pullman’s children’s novel, “The Scarecrow and His Servant” blends fantasy with adventure to create a curious story of friendship and ingenuity. When struck by lightning in a wheat field, a typical scarecrow with a broomstick backbone and a turnip head comes to life like Frankenstein—with the notable exception of the scarecrow’s decidedly benign and non-monstrous nature. The Scarecrow soon happens upon a young boy, Jack, whom he adopts as his servan...more

An amusing book about a scarecrow which comes to life and partners up with a young boy who becomes his servant. Together they go on a journey to Spring Valley – a place the scarecrow claims he owns. They are constantly faced with trouble and the scarecrow is seen to have many crazy antics while his servant is always there to support him. The book is full of entertaining moments as the scarecrow takes part in a play, becomes a member of the army, finds work in a field and even falls in love. Mean...more

This is a very entertaining Middle Grade read. I really enjoyed Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" series and "Sally Lockhart" books, so I do like his writing style and his inventive storytelling. The Scarecrow and His Servant is a mix of a fairy tale and an homage to Don Quixote with a sinister streak in the unknown motivations of the powerful Buffaloni family. Although the adventures the Scarecrow takes Jack on are rather sedate and sometimes just silly, Jack and the Scarecrow's schemes are...more

Menakut-nakuti penjahat, menjadi aktor, sampai bergabung...more

I got the chance reading this wonderful book back when I was halfway (or was it at the end?) through middle school. Following my little obsession with Philip Pullman after reading his marvellous His Dark Materials trilogy, I found this little story on the shelves of my school library and instantly borrowed it.

It's quite a nice and light read. To be honest I don't really remember the whole story (even though it was only 4-5 years ago), but I remember the little laughs and chuckles it brought to m...more

Very nice. Sadly, young liberal readers these days like to bash him while finding nothing dogmatic about Narnia, but then underneath Pullman's humour there is a biting wit, and the adventures have a realistic background which especially older readers can't fail to notice. Here soldiers aren't romanticised or idolised, and "non independentem judgi nogoodi", while "absolutem absurditas scaribirdibus landlordium". The orphan Jack is much smarter than his master Scarecrow, which should please childr...more

This is a surprisingly good book, full of fun adventure. A farmer crafts a scarecrow using a giant turnip and sticks and hangs it in his garden only to have it stolen multiple times over. Then one day, the scarecrow comes alive and proclaims himself to be Lord Scarecrow and takes on a poor, starving boy as his servant. This is only the beginning of a full adventure.

The Scarecrow and his Servant is such a magical, delightful and lovely story that drifts you right into a new fantasy-world full of wonders.
It's about friendship , trickery, hardships and many adventures!

Great writing by Philip Pullman and I definitely liked this story better than the other two I've read before this one.
