Been there, slain that . . .

Ashe Carver, monster-killer, has the scars to prove it. But faced with a custody battle, she's hung up her stakes and taken a job at the public library, determined to show the courts and her ten-year-old daughter that she's as good a mother as she is a hunter.

Easier said than done. There are lovelorn vampires haunting the library, a slime demon...more

This is an interesting, well-written story, with a nice balance of humor, scariness, and tenderness. I enjoyed the read and am looking forward to the next in the series.

Ashe is an adrenaline junkie who has quit her job as a vampire slayer so she can retain custody of her estranged daughter, Eden. Reynard has been a guard for the Castle for hundreds of years, maintaining his sanity by holding onto the mantra duty, dignity and death. After Reynard’s soul is stolen by a collector demon,...more

Ashe Carver is an ex-slayer. She has given up that job in exchange for being a mother to her ten year old daughter, Eden. She also has a lot of problems to tackle - a custody battle for her kid, demons to vanquish, a vampire to stop, and a magical urn to retrieve. Her ally, Captain Reynard, leader of the Guardsman that keeps the magical creatures from over running the world, has only weeks to live unless Ashe can find the urn t...more

Beware of spoilers

This is the third installment of the Dark Forgotten series that follows the supernaturals of the town of Fairview. This book focuses on Holly’s sister, Ashe, and the guardsman, Captain Reynard, she helped keep safe in the last book, Scorched.

Ashe has taken her daughter, Eden, out of boarding school and has returned to live in Fairview near her family. Now, her daughter’s paternal grandparents are fighting for custody and Ashe has t...more

Fallout from her sister Holly's life changing event are complicating Ashe's life. Favorite Quote: “I would like to ride a good horse again.”

“Well, I have some unicorns down in the basement, if you’d like to take them out for a spin.”

“They only like virgins. I’m rather too late to that party.”

Ashe Carver is monster killer extraordinaire-and she has the scars to prove it. But she hangs up her stakes in favor of a more sedate Librarian job in order to convince her in laws that she is a fit mother. But life never goes the way you plan. Vamps want to impregnate her, a slime demon...more

I had a little trouble reconciling this version of Ashe with the version introduced in Scorched. But I enjoyed Unchained on its own merits. And Reynard is a hunk.
ETA (view spoiler)[I was a bit disappointed with the ending. Although Reynard was "unchained," we were reminded that he only had 40 years to live. And I don't recall any kind of a HEA commitment being made between Ashe and Reynard. If there was one, it sure didn't stick out in my mind. (hide spoiler)]

A semi-retired-monster-hunter-and-single-mom-turned-public librarian, a gorgeous-but-ice-cold guard of a supernatural prison... and those are just the MAIN characters. This book was a fun ride-- great baddies (gotta love a slime demon in the mall), intriguing supporting characters, and a (surprisingly) believable plot and relationship. (And I'm not just saying that 'cause I'm a librarian.) I need to remember to pick up the previous titles in this loosely-linked series (same world, but not same c...more

I would just like to say this before I begin: I bought Sharon's first book, Ravenous, a while back. However, due to a large TBR pile--as I'm sure most bloggers can relate to--I did not have the chance to start the first book. In fact, it was months before I finally fished it up out of the book pile.

That was one of the stupidest mistakes of my "reading life".

I'm always pleasantly surprised when I find a paranormal romance that...more

In February of 2009 the author debuted The Dark Forgotten series with book #1 Ravenous and I was intrigued by the story of Holly Carver, in December book #2 Scorched the story of Conall Macmillan and Constance Moore sucked me back into the authors world.. This book Unchained with the story of Ashe Carver and Captain Reynard absolutely blew me away!
Ashe is Holly's sister and the nightmare of every monster, she is also a single mother with all the problems inherent with the job! In this story whil...more

As an adrenalin junkie, Ashe Carver has a tough time reconciling her slayer life with motherhood. Now that her in-laws are threatening to take her child, she has resigned from that life and is trying to adjust to a regular 9 to 5 job while being a full-time mother. That is until, Castle guard Captain Reynard once again appears in her life. The attraction is instant though logistics will be difficult with him living in another realm. Fighting renegade vampires and hunting down Reynard's stolen so...more

I have really enjoyed this series. It's a lesser known one, I think. Somehow overlooked by many.

This is the 3rd book in the series The Dark Forgotten. In Ravenous, the series starts out with the story about Holly, a witch who runs her family's paranormal investigation business. (Kinda like Ghost Busters, but better) Holly's sister, Ashe is the focus of this book.

One of the things I really enjoy about this series is "the Castle". The Castle is located in another dimension and was built as a pri...more

Unchained is the third novel in Sharon Ashwood’s Dark Forgotten Series, this time focusing on Captain Reynard. Captain Reynard works in the Castle, the Supernatural Prison. Though he works as a Guard, he basically is a prisoner himself. When he was taken to the Castle, his soul was taken & placed in an Urn…but now that Urn has been stolen & the further away Reynard is from him, the shorter his life span becomes.

Ashe Carver is a widow who met Reynard while helping her sister in the Castle...more

I am not sure why I didn't care for this book. I really came to like Ashe in this book, really liked Reynard, and loved them together. But as I was reading this book I was a little bored while reading this one. The scenes with the fae prince in the Castle were so boring, the whole lawyer thing with Ashe unappealing. I loved the evil bunny theme running through the book and I really liked getting to know Eden and her relationship with Ashe. I guess I can only hope the next book will be better.

It had some small moments I liked, such as, "Sadly, slaying library patrons wasn't allowed. Bad customer service and all."
But overall, it just left me thinking, "eh." When I got to the end, I didn't realize it WAS the end - what about the witchy-warlocky power thing? What happens when they finally get out of the sack? I turned the page, thinking it would sort of wrap up, only to find it was an excerpt from the next book, and that was it for this one. Felt kinda cheated.

I enjoyed the world Ms Ashwood has created and the characters in it. I also like the balance she has achieved between Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. The UF seemed dominant to be and the PR added some spice. I Recommend the entire series.

I believe that Ashwood's writing skills have improved as the series progresses. Good stuff.

Unchained by Sharon Ashwood is everything I’d expect from a kickass paranormal romance and more. The romance builds slowly, teasing you with possibilities, making you wonder if they’ll ever let themselves go and be together. Ashe is such an amazing heroine, I couldn’t help but love her. Her past is rough and full of attacks on her heart, and she’s become bitter through the years but she’s willing to change for those she loves.

Unchained is the third installment in Sharon Ashwood's Dark Forgotten series. Pretty good book. The ending is resolved a bit easy but I can live with it. The characters are very likeable, even the kids. The world she's created is developed well as are the main characters and the secondaries.

I just love this author! Ashwood is very gifted and her decriptions really place you in the characters life! This was my first recommendation from GoodReads and I can't be thankful enough! One of the best series I've read since Riley Jenson novels...

I got so caught up in this book that I became sad when I read the last page. I'm adding Sharon to my favorite author's list. She's right up there with Kim Harrison! Her writing flows and her characters have a way of coming to life.

I was a little skeptical when I saw that Captain Reynard was going to be Ashe's love interest and just thought there were so many more fun characters to choose from. But I ended up being pleasantly surprised. SO far this is my favorite book of the series.

Reynard's soul has been stolen. He needs Ashe to help him find it. Will Ashe be willing to admit her attraction to Reynard or will it be too late? I thought this was the best book in the Dark Forgetten series yet. I enjoyed the development of the characters. We finally find out Ashe's secrets. Good reading.
Donna
Wasn't sure about Ashe, but she grew on me. Still thought there was more that could have been done with her, especially with her troubled history. Loved Reynard before, love him more now.
Shelley
I liked this the most in the series. The story is a nice blend of action and romance. The characters are likable without being perfect. The main female character is tough, but doesn't shove it down your throat with how badass she is. I recommend it for PNR fans who like story over sex, but not offended by sex (Do people offended by sex scenes read PNR?)
Emily
Reading this series out of order because of getting them from the library. Still pretty good.
Michele
Captain Reynard is my new favorite hero. He and Ashe make quite the demon slayer team. This was a great one and the good Captain was very sigh worthy.
Michael
PNR with a decent plot and likeable characters. This series keeps going strong.
Cassandra
I liked this one a lot better than the 2nd book. I still need to read book #1 Ravenous.

The best one yet! This series just keeps getting better.

Wasn't so thrilled about it unlike the first book. I've read the excerpt of book4, sounds much more interesting hopefully it won't disappoint.
