This book is simple, yet amazing. It is based on the true story of Luis Soriana who lives in Colombia. His passion is reading and wants to spread that love to those who are not fortunate enough to have books. He takes two donkeys, hitches up some shelves with books on them and calls them the "Biblioburros". This would be a great way to introduce students to the concept of helping others who are less fortunate or who may have been through circumstances that requires aide. This story shows that on...more

Bright Colors, wild animals, and cartoon drawings visually attract young children to this amazing story set in Columbia. Not only is this book an incredible tale, but it is one that is based on a true story. The tale is of a Columbian school teacher that loved to read. One day he realized that he had so many books that he decided to give them to other people. He traveled with two burros (mules) to deliver his extra books to children high up in the mountains of Columbia. Monica Brown uses vivid d...more
The eccentric and true story, Biblioburro: A True Story from Colombia by Jeanette Winter, is about Luis, books, and donkeys! When Luis starts collecting more and more books, his wife becomes overwhelmed! He decides to start a traveling library of sorts. Using his burros, he brings the books to people who otherwise would not have access to them.

Adorable and inspiring. I want to donate books!
This is a wonderful true story. Luis Soriana and his burros are still acting as a library to areas that would otherwise not have access to books. This is a modern story. According to the author’s note at the end of the book, this man and his burros started delivering books starting in 2000 when he had 70 books; he now has over 4,800 books to share.

I selected this book as my Latino multicultural book because I thought it was very good example of their work. This stroy is based off a true stroy from Colombia. The story follows a man who enjoys reading and gets a great idea that if when he goes to get more books he will bring an extra donkey to carry more books. After he collects a lot of book he names his libary "Bibliobrro". The story also shows how his libary grows and more and more kids come to visit it. The illustrations of...more

Biblioburro is the true story of schoolteacher Luis Soriano's commitment to bring books to remote areas of his native Colombia. A voracious reader, Soriano had a large collection of books that he wanted to share. He used two burros to make his first trip, which are depicted in this book. Soriano's journey brings him through the Colombian wilderness, and the native plants and animals can be see through vivid illustrations. What I loved most about this story was not just its colorful images that looked like soft quilts on paper, but the idea that one man would share his passion for reading and the treasury of books with those who have none. Based on the true story of Luis Soriana, this picture book will give a glimpse into the life of this avid reader and his biblioburros (library donkeys), who lovingly carry the power of reading into the isolated villages of Colombia so that others might enjoy a good book and enri...more
Based on a true story, this would be a great book to introduce small children to the idea that not every culture is like ours. Not every child has access to books! I totally love the idea of book donkeys (what I wouldn't give to cuddle one)-- but unfortunately, my favorite illustration turned out to be the cover. Solid illustrations throughout, and sure to hold a child's interest, just nothing that blew me away. I'd definitely recommend this one for a classroom or themed read-aloud, though.
This lovely and engaging book tells the story of Luis Soriana, who shared his love of books with a small mountain village in Colombia via his two donkeys--Alfa and Beto. A librarian at heart, Soriana travelled weekly to the village to distribute books. Pair this with My Librarian is a Camel Margriet Ruurs or That Book Woman by Heather Henson to teach students the myriad ways books are shared and distributed around the world.
Fun illustrations and a straightforward story that opened our eyes to value of books and the difficulties some folks have in getting them. Read this one before "My Librarian is a Camel" - a personal story vs. the overall approach. (There is a page where bandits hold him up, It resolves quickly and well - but I menion it because it would have been really bothersome to my daughter a few years back - so just a heads up.)
Based on the life of Luis Soriana who delivers books to children in remote parts of Columbia -- via burro. My favorite part was the nearly wordless two-page spread where Luis tells the children -- who he has given pig masks to -- the story of the three little pigs. The story is depicted in thought bubbles above the children's heads. Illustrated with really bright colored, folk art style illustrations by Winter.
"Deep in the jungles of Columbia, there lives a man who loves books."
And so begins the wonderful true story of a man named Luis who comes up with a brilliant idea to share his books with those who have none.
4 stars for the story and 5 stars for the gorgeously bright and vivid illustrations! Loved the random butterflies perching on their heads and shoulders and the adorably drawn burros. <3

Nice, brightly-illustrated account of bibliophile Luis' efforts to shared his beloved and overflowing book collection with those too remote to reach the library. I'm sure his undertaking was more complicated (financially and practically) than is presented here, but this is right for small children.
I read this in Spanish, but that edition doesn't seem to exist on goodreads.

This is a very colorful storybook about a Colombian man who shares his book collection with neighboring villages by heading the world's first donkey-back library!
Vegan parents note: Since this story features animals as beasts of burden, as well as Luis buying the two donkeys he uses for his library, there may be a bit of discomfort for vegan families in this one.

Luis has too many books! He decides to buy two burros, Alfa and Beto, so he can share his books with people who live the faraway hills. And thus the biblioburro is born in Colombia. I liked the pictures and, while the story itself is simple, it is appropriate for K - grade 2. This book would pair nicely with Heather Henson and David Small's That Book Woman.
What librarian wouldn't love this true story about a man who delivers "library" books on a burro to the people in remote areas of Colombia? What a cool story! The actual text and illustrations were just so-so, however. Maybe it's the color palatte that bothers me...it gives it such a whimsical feel that it lesses the inspirational aspect of the story.
cute true story. I love that the donkeys are named alpha and beto. This book includes Spanish words that anyone should be able to figure out. bold clean pictures. Maybe a good read aloud for National Library something or other. or the day of the niño/libro in April. kinda small book, so not as great for read aloud from that standpoint.
Luis Soriana, an avid reader and schoolteacher, wanted to share his love of reading with people and children living in isolated areas in northern Colombia so he bought two burros and changed the lives of many. Most of the homes in this areas were without books and Luis greatly enhanced their lives with books.

A simple and sweet true story of Luis Soriana, a Colombian man who shares his collection of books. What makes the story unique is that he has two burros who help him carry his books into the isolated villages each weekend. Colorful illustrations and simple text make this non-fiction picture book accessible to the youngest readers.

Loved this story! It's the true story of a wonderful Columbian man who lives in the countryside in a house full of books, books and more books! One day, he decides (with a little help from his wife, who is getting a bit tired of all those books everywhere, haha!) that he should share his love of stories with children across the countryside who don't have access to books in their everyday lives. So, he loads crates of books onto burros and has a traveling Biblioburro :-) The story is told with th...more
This is a wonderful tale about a man who brings books to people throughout Colombia. The narrative is short and interesting and the illustrations are colorful and feature lots of flora and fauna of the local area. The best part about the story is that it's true. We really enjoyed reading this story together.
