For about the first forty pages, RED HOT FURY has a rocky start, but after it gets over that hump it's a worthwhile read. The Furies are an interesting breed that brings a welcome change from all the vampires, weres, witches, et al. to the urban fantasy genre, and the author adds her own spin to the species. Marissa, or rather Riss, is a tough, sarcastic, sure-of-herself character that won't appeal to everyone, but if you like them more on the gritty side then she might be the heroine for you. T...more

Story description, for my personal purpose only: HUGE SPOILER TO THE WHOLE PLOTLINE. Behind the spoiler tag is basically what the book is all about. You've been warned!

(view spoiler)[Marissa Holloway is a Fury; she had been born into an ancient bloodlines sworn to protect bothmortals and immortals from those who would use magic to harm them. As a Tisiphone (class of Furies responsible for solving most homicides, Marissa also works as Boston Chief Magical Investigator, solving murder cas...more

A complex, non-stop thrill-ride of a story with virtually every type of supernatural imaginable thrown into the mix and battles up the wazoo.

Marissa Holloway is a Fury, the supernatural world's avenger of wrong-doing. She's also the Boston police's Chief Magical Investigator. So when what initially appears to be the body of a sister-Fury is discovered, Rissa's one of the first on the scene.

Except on further investigation, Rissa realizes the body isn't really her best friend Vanessa but has been...more

Fresh world-building, free of the usual stuff: check
Tough, sarcastic heroine: check
Interesting plot and mythology: check

What I really liked about this book:
-it's action packed
-the Greek mythology (Oracles, Orpheus, Fury and Harpies!)
-the power respect the original mythology
-Furies and Harpies (grrrll power! )

Unfortunately, it suffers midway of a too convoluted plot (the family reunion was contrived and sounded false(view spoiler)[to be honest it was impossibly false. Her mother has be...more

This book could have had potential. The premise and the idea of the Fury is actually pretty novel and unique. Furies are driven by their Rage which gives them special uber-powers. They are governed by the Sisterhood comprised of Furies of different types, overlooking the peace accord between the mundanes and arcanes.

I liked the overall plot of solving a supernatural conspiracy and murder mystery. Riss, or Marissa, was the Chief Investigator of the Magical Crime Unit. In this book, she was driven...more

Marissa is a Fury an immortal peace keeper between mortals and arcane creatures. She is also the Magical Investigator for the Boston PD, and when she is called in for an arcane killing she sees a body of a fellow Fury. But what she discovers is that a shape-shifter from a long thought extinct race just looked like her best-friend but was not. When she tells the PD what she has uncovered she is suddenly off the case and suspended. The next thing she knows is that there is a contract out on her li...more

I got this book through the Amazon vine program as an Advanced Reading Copy. It is the first book in the Shades of Fury series, I was unable to find how many books are planned for this series. The book was okay; there were some great things about it and a number of flaws in it too.

Riss is a Fury, sworn to protect mortals from non-mortals, she works for the Sisterhood and as the head of Magical Investigations in the local police department. When the body of a sister Fury washes up, Riss is Mandat...more

Red Hot Fury is the first book in the Shades of Fury series by Kasey Mackenzie and an ACE Fantasy.

Book Blurb:

Hell hath nothing worse than a Fury scorned...

As a Fury, Marissa Holloway belongs to an Arcane race that has avenged wrongdoing since time immemorial. As Boston's Chief Magical Investigator for the past five years, she's doing what she was born to: solving supernatural crimes.

It's far from business as usual when the body of one of Riss's sister Furies washes up in Boston harbor. Riss disc...more

When I read a new author I often find myself comparing their writing styles to those of my more loved and frequently re-read authors. Hoping for something similar enough to someone else that if I'm in a 'mood' for a certain style of writing I have multiple authors to choose from. Now, if I were to say Kasey MacKenzie reminds me of someone, it would have to be a rough version of Kim Harrison.

As Red Hot Fury is a more modern take on old Greek mythology, it snagged me in right away. Even though th...more

I chose this book because I love urban fantasy, and even paranormal romance when done well. Unfortunately, I think this book was just trying too hard. I felt like the entire beginning of the book was screaming "see, look how original my world is!" by throwing descriptions at the reader. When, it fact, most of the elements were taken from other popular urban fantasy series. Jim Butcher, Kim Harrison, and Marc Del Franco have already done most of what's here including: 1) the uber-powerful Council...more

Forgive me if this review contains some ranting. Red Hot Fury started off on a bad note for me. The main character instantly comes off as an irritated cop. There is entirely too much slang and attitude in the first few pages. Complain, complain, give someone attitude, yell at someone, attitude, attitude, complain. Needless to say, the main character Riss got under my skin from the start. I got past it and started to be interested in the mystery. A thought to be extinct group of paranormals turns...more

Finally finished Kasey Mackenzie's Red Hot Fury and it was awesome!! Was curious about this book when I saw the cover and found out that she was a local author! And plus the storyline sounded interesting. I love Greek mythology and found out that the Furies here are Roman based, as Greek and Roman mythology tend to be somewhat similar, but with differences. So I was all over this book from the moment I read all about this!

It wasn't a letdown either! It starts off right away with Riss finding the...more

This is book one in a new urban fantasy series, Riss is a red leather wearing 'Fury', She has a strong character, a huge chip on her shoulder & is very easy to like. I found the story stop start, it's as if the author had loads of ideas & had to get them all in at once, lots of characters have been introduced but not really rounded off, but cut off abruptly, her relationship with Scott personally did not flow, but I like his strong, protective, sometimes stubborn character.
It's an easy...more

This is an excellent beginning to what promises to be a good series in the realm of super-powered, other than humans. It is well written, moves along very quickly, but the fifth star is missing because I felt the author tipped her hand early as to who the "real" bad guys were. What should be a big surprise only revealed to me what I had suspected all along. Maybe I was just prescient, but it was no surprise.
The characters are engaging and even charming. There are plenty of suspicions and mistrus...more

My Thoughts: I LOVED THIS BOOK! It was full of action, supernatural beings, and a love story. All around great Urban Fantasy with a supernatural kick rarely seen before, a Fury heroine!
One thing that drew me in right away was the cover. The second thing was the subject matter, Furies. I've never read a book before where the main character was a Fury. The author just did a great job of mixing Greek supernatural beings with giants, gobli...more

Omg!This could have been a decent book if not for the major plot holes. This novel is problematic. I'm not s even finished reading and had to stop and rant at how bad the writing is. Not to spoil it for anyone but why would any character accept in two minutes the return of a missing parent and a new sibling (he's 18 but looks 39!! WTF!!)? Not to mention the main characters mentor saying "trust no one but me" plot line. You can see the betrayal coming a mile away. Here's the kicker! I haven't eve...more

Red Hot Fury by Kasey Mackenzie is the first novel in her Shades of Fury Series and a great beginning of this series. I found myself being pulled to this book by its description and I have to say it didn’t disappoint me.

Marissa “Riss” Holloway is the Chief Magical Investigator for Boston police department and also an immortal fury. She is one of the peace keepers between the mortals and the paranormal beings. But the peace is on the line when her latest case becomes personal when she is called i...more

I read an ARC of this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The action is super fast paced, the characters were intersting, and the world created was well fleshed out for the most part. There were times when I felt more information could have been given but, then again, I hate it when the first book in a series becomes the book where everything is explained because it tends to drag down story and plot.

I thought the "ladies" were a brilliant touch. You'll know when you read it. The different paranormal...more

Honestly, once you got past the first 50 pages or so it became bearable. I'm only giving this book three stars because it got a bit better toward the end. IMO the character was a wreck emotionally. Now while I generally like those, I like them when well written. Riss was forgettable- more or less- as a character and it seemed as though she only came in two modes. Sarcastic B*tch or Angry B*tch. I mean, i get it. She's a Fury, thus temperamental. Then next thing ya know she's melting into Scott....more

Really enjoyed this one! I don't think I've read a book featuring furies before, and never really knew their mythology. Love it when I come across new myths and legends! Liked the background provided about harpies and warhounds as well. Very cool!

Really liked Riss, the Fury who is trying to track down why Arcanes have been disappearing, and why someone wants her to think that her missing best friend is dead. She's one of those kickass heroines that I love, and I really liked her. Maybe it was he...more

Red Hot Mess!,

I really wanted to like this book and I was disappointed that it was so corny. The author seemed like she was trying to hard to incorporate stolen ideas from not one but most of the modern pop culture TV into this one novel. I feel like the first chapter alone combined episodes of Charmed, Law & Order and Smallville. This book has poser written all over it for me and I have zero patience for it. The Superhuman healing comments were way over the top, juvenile and irritating as h...more

(3.5 Stars) "Red Hot Fury" is a difficult review for me to write because there were so many things I liked about the book and quite a few things I did not like. First, let me say the story line is unique in that it deals with one of my favorite genres mythology. Our main character, Marissa Holloway is a Fury and Chief Magical Investigator whose job is to avenge crimes against the supernatural. She works within the police department in a position that was set up after a war between the arcanes an...more

It's nice to see that someone remembered that there are supernatural beings OTHER than vampires (gasp - say it ain't so!) but the story-telling in this book could use a little work. For example, it's probably not a great idea to suddenly let everyone know that the heroine has an unusual ability in the last ten pages of the book - especially if that ability has not even been alluded to at any other point in the story. You might as well have written, "Did I mention that she was able to move betwee...more

Great new urban fantasy. The characters are just so well written I could stop reading and wanted more when I finished. Riss is a fury, a group of arcane women who have powers and strength that help them keep the other magical beings around in place, making sure people are safe. But when Riss discover a fellow sister that has been murdered and once she thought was kidnapped, now a new mission beings for her. Along with he smoken hot ex boyfriend Morgan, who is a warhound, she tries to find out wh...more

Look out, paranormal baddies; Marissa Holloway is on the job. Riss is a Fury, and her mission is to fight supernatural crime. Kasey MacKenzie bases her Furies on the ones from Greek mythology, but with a twist. In myth, there were three Furies: Alecto, Tisiphone, and Megaera. Here, these names represent not individual Furies, but classes of Furies. Riss is a Tisiphone. This means she wears red and deals mainly with homicides.

(Unfortunately, MacKenzie doesn’t do as much with this concept as one m...more

When I read the synopsis of this book I thought it had potential. The main character, Marissa, was unique; she was a Fury and she was supposedly badass. She even tells you this a couple of times and hey, her blood red leather outfit screams it to the world...or so she says. It's too bad she was more of a dumbass than a badass. It was painful to read in parts. Marissa blacked-out several times. I like my heroines with heart and courage, women who I can relate to and empathize with. This heroine w...more

Marissa Holloway, Chief Magical Investigator for the Boston Police Department has spent the years since fully coming into her Fury birthright maintaining the peace between the arcane and the mundane of the world. Usually by solving supernatural crimes, more specifically murders.

When she's called to the site of a murdered sister-Fury, only to discover the body isn't who she's supposed to be, things get crazy in a hurry. Suspended from her job, Riss finds herself on the run from enemies she didn'...more

This is more of a 2 and half stars for me, and I can't bring myself to give it more.
I usually like to wait for a series to get off the ground with a few books before I get into a new one. I felt this was sort of a 'meh' book, but I guess I have read a lot worse first books than this one. The plot and premise held real promise and I was really drawn in the world building from the start. I liked the concept of the furies, but the world building could have been smoother and the rules integrated be...more

I really liked the main characters, Riss was very interesting. She was kick ass and stubborn. The book had a stronger romantic element than I usually see in UF, Which I really liked because I usually dont read a whole lot of UF because of that. Scott was a sexy character. He was a shapeshifter, a warhound and i thought that was different. All in all I really enjoyed the main characters but I had some issues with the storyline and the worldbuilding, I wanted to know more about her world I felt li...more
