Karin Slaughter always gives a pretty good thrill, but I'm getting a little tired of the whole Grant County scene. I absolutely love Will Trent, and I'd like to see him well away from Angie and preferably with Sarah, but all these serial killer-type situations in one tiny, minuscule, happy, joyous (as Slaughter delights in reminding us) town is getting a bit old, frankly.

I loved it! ‘Broken’ is another thrilling masterpiece written by my favorite author, Karin Slaughter!
Not only was ‘Broken’ a great read, but it was wonderful to read about Sara again and get immersed back into a new crime mystery, featuring both her, Will, and of course Lena. With all her books— ‘Broken’included—Karin Slaughter has kept me up late, on the edge of my seat, and glued until the last act—which inevitably comes too quick. This book was fun to read, but not for the reasons the author probably intended. My favorite parts of the book were the incredibly awkward interactions between Sara and Will, both of them are so socially retarded, both thinking neither is good for the other, not realizing they are perfect for each other if only Sara could get over her dead husband and Will could get rid of Angie who is the biggest user I have ever seen.
I also loved Sara's family and the town's reaction to Will. The More...

This is another great read in the Georgia Series. I find Will Trent to be an interesting character and I look forward to his story development.
This novel was set in Grant County so we meet up with Sara Linton and Lena Adams again.
When Special Agent Will Trent arrives in Grant County, he finds a police department determined to protect its own and far too many unanswered questions about a prisoner’s death. He doesn’t understand why Officer Lena Adams is hiding secrets from him. More...

Karin Slaughter has long been a perfect author in the crime fiction category. My favorite character of hers has always been Special Agent Will Trent. Will is one of those men who not only are fantastic at their job, but they have a back story that literally makes you want to run right out and find them, take them home, and offer them the best that life has to offer to make up for all the bad things they’ve suffered. When Will was a boy, he lived in orphanages and foster homes. Currently he’s

This mystery set in a small Georgia town primarily deals with the investigation into a seemingly corrupt police department. The first third of the book was rather gripping. The characters were strong, the relationships were realistic and compelling, and the mystery was tightly woven.
The climax of this novel was disappointing, however. The resolution felt sloppy and many revelations came out of nowhere. The motivations of key characters broke down. The last two chapters of the bo More...

Karin is a native of Georgia and her books take place in the fictitious Grant County, Georgia, and the not fictitious Atlanta, Georgia.
Her first novels were exclusively about the rural Grant County, but her latest novels have gravitated to the metropolitan Atlanta.

I have read all of the books in this series and think highly of them. I was shocked that Jeffrey was killed off. This has created tension between Dr. Sarah, Jeffrey's wife, who blames one of his officer's, Lena. Sarah is convinced that Lena is out of control and responsible for Jeffrey's death. Sarah wants to discredit Lena and see her pay for her wrongdoings. When Sarh comes home for Thanksgiving, she is confrotnign with all she left behind after her husband's deatn. This is considered to be the 7th book in the Grant County series, which I have not read. I prefer to think of it as the 3rd book in the Will Trent series, which I *have* read. Will Trent is one of my favorite lead detectives (dyslexia, trust issues, and all), and I enjoyed being introduced to Grant County through his eyes.

Reason for Reading: I read the author's newest book every year.
After an anonymous tip, police find an apparent suicide weighted down in the local lake. It doesn't take long before the suicide is proven to be a murder and when police go back to her house they find a masked man inside who flees, seriously stabbing an officer before he is caught. The man turns out to be a 19-year-old mentally challenged local whom everyone knows to be a gentle soul. Sarah Linton is in town visiting her fa More...

By Denise "DC" (Missouri, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Broken: A Novel (Grant County) (Hardcover)
This is the second Grant County novel to feature Will Trent along with Sara Linton. His partner, Faith, is not in this novel except as a phone buddy as she is about to have a baby. Although the story line was decent enough, it lacked the pulse pounding suspense and true thriller sense that I usually get More...

I got this book free from First Reads, and I have to admit that I was a little worried about reading it. I had never read any of Karin Slaughter's other work in the Grant County series. Often times, it's difficult to find the characters engaging and the story enjoyable when you are not familiar with the history of the characters/series from previous novels.
However, I was very pleasantly surprised with Broken. I was drawn in by the story right from page 1, both by the intrigue of the More...

Former coroner Sara Linton hasn’t visited her hometown in Grant County, Georgia since the death of her husband, Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver. Almost four years later, she returns, planning to spend Thanksgiving with her family. Shortly thereafter, Tommy Braham, a mentally disabled young man, is arrested for the murder of Allison Spooner and asks that Sara, his former pediatrician, visit him. When Sara arrives at the jail, it appears Tommy has committed suicide. Sara, who blames the arresting of

Broken is the latest book in Karin Slaughter's Grant County series. It had been awhile since I'd visited Grant County through these books, so it was nice to get back into it.
It's been four years since the death of Jeffrey Tolliver, police chief in Grant County, GA. His wife, Sarah - the local pediatrician and Medical Examiner - sold her practice to move to Atlanta. It didn't hold the same heartache as Grant County had. And it didn't hold Lena Adams, the woman that Sarah blamed fo More...

The first real thought that passed through my head was damn it been four years and Sara still carries her unyielding hatred and contempt for Lena- oh what a shock Not. Seriously at first I could deal with the disdain and stuff but it has being ongoing and endless and frankly I have no I idea why any more. Cops with attitude are a dime dozen, so what exact act has Lena committed to warrant a whole book being about Sara’s vengeance, that is never really attained. It seems that the book was intend

I got this book as a birthday present and it is the first one by Karin Slaughter, that I ever read. I as hooked by the very beginning of the book, whih is a ggood thing. Sometimes you read the first 100 pages or so and do not really get into the topic or the characters, but it was really hard to put this book down.

I received this as a first read selection. This was my first Grant County book and my second Will Trent ( I have read Triptych). I really enjoyed the actual crime solving in this book. Trent is a great character, a severely disfunctioning dyslexic detective. The ways he is able to get around this and solve puzzles is very intriguing and I think added a lot to the story.
Overall, I think the plot was good in theory. I liked the concept of the internal coverup, however I think it fell More...

A fairly sturdy police procedural that goes out of it's way to examine the shades of grey that make up any investigation. Bad cops aren't born overnight, this novel posits, but gradually evolve over the course of a million shortcuts and a long slow lessening of standards. The characters here also have a little more depth to them than your standard black and white thrillers. Here in Grant County, there aren't heroes and villians per se but flawed people doing the best they can within the conte

Often, when a writer has a successful series under the belt, the quality suffers, particularly in genre fiction such as crime writing. There are a few notable exceptions, such as Ed McBain (though even he was guilty of the lamentable Ghosts,) but by and large it's hard to pick up a book in the middle of a series and find it as engaging as a stand-alone mystery/thriller (in this case) as another in a series of books about a set of characters. Even harder is to become acutely involved with these c

Karin Slaughter merges characters from her earlier novels in Broken, when Special Agent Will Trent is called to Grant County to investigate the suicide of a jailed murder suspect. The local cops have arrested young Tommy Braham for the killing of a local college student found in a lake, in what looks like a crime of passion. Tommy's confessed, but slits his own wrists in his cell, and Dr. Sara Linton, former county medical examiner who is in town to visit her family, suspects that there's more t

Sara Linton requests the help of the GBI after an incident in her hometown involving and old patient and the possibly corrupt police station where her deceased husband worked as Chief. Of course, she gets pulled into the case alongside our favorite damaged detective, Will Trent.

Given many people's natural tendency to complain, I'm slightly disappointed that Broken doesn't give me anything to criticize. Even when I tried (hard) to find something worthy of complaint, I came up short. Slaughter has written a novel that is full of interesting characters and a mystery that kept me guessing the whole way through. I was up until 2 in the morning on more than one occasion because I didn't want to stop reading. Only doing so eventually for fear that I might've drooled on my shi

I loved this despite reading it immediately after Faithful Place, which sets an incredibly high bar as far as mysteries are concerned. Really, though, Tana French books are novels that just happen to center around mysteries, whereas Karin Slaughter is straight-up genre fiction (not that there is anything wrong with that!). She writes it well. If you want a regular old cops/killer mystery, Karin Slaughter's three most recent are excellent choices. She's no Tana French (seriously -- my friends

What a great mystery! It kept me on the edge of the seat turning pages well into the night. It is the story of a double murder in a small town; the corrupt chief of the police force of Grant County is trying to keep things under wraps while tying ends up quickly but inefficiently; he would very much like for his senior detective, Lena Adams, to take the fall for the many 'mistakes' that were made during the investigation. Broken
(possible spoilers below)
This is the 7th in the Grant County series, even though Undone (first in the Georgia series) featured Sarah, it is the first in the Georgia series.
I have read all of Karin Slaughter's books, and she is one of my top five favorite authors. Her books are intense thrill rides, usually with some blood and violence, but always great writing, plot, and in-depth characters. I consider her books a staple in my library.

I think this is one of her best yet. Her characterizations are particularly good, and the plot keeps things going at a pretty intense rate. I had forgotten how much I like her writing, and looking over the list of her books it looks like I have missed a few. I plan to correct that. I never know how to take Lena Adams. Every time she does something right and you think she is going to straighten out she does something stupid. I think of her as basically a good person, but she does something
