Deer & Other Stories
by
Susan Tepper
In her debut story collection DEER, Susan Tepper takes us into the forest of her imagination, shining a light on a pack of off-kilter characters caught in unusual and compelling circumstances. Tepper is one of the most original voices in fiction I've heard in quite a while. While reading her loopy-beautiful dark narratives, I was reminded of the first time I read Denis Joh...more

This blew me away. A few of the stories were not as powerful as others, but the opening two stories opened my eyes, ears, and heart, and I was on board for the ride from that point on. Susan has a talent for finding the succinct image, the true dialogue, and quietly dramatic situations. I'm so glad I found this book. I want to write like she does when I grow up.
Certain stories resonate with imagery, imagination, and originality, such as The Grass Eye, set in Italy. The stories aren't thematically linked, but each makes reference to a deer. It makes the reader wonder with the reading of each story how Tepper will carry it off this time, a little mystery to be solved.
