"Throughout the ages, many things have been used as currency: livestock, grains, spices, shells, beads, and now paper. But only two things have ever been money gold and silver. When paper money becomes too abundant, and thus loses its value, man always turns back to precious metals. During these times there is always an enormous wealth transfer, and it is within your power ...more

I used to think gold and silver investments were for fringe investors and eccentric conspiracy theorists. My thinking has been shifting.

This book introduced me to two key phenomena:

1. Asset prices fluctuate in relation to each other, but rarely permanently change in value. Precious metals aren’t always a “better” investment than stocks, for example; but a profit can be made off of one when it is undervalued vs. the other. Currently gold is priced well below its historical average against the Dow

If you are poor it is because you lack financial knowledge. Read this and know why you should be buying silver as a great investment for the future.

Notes & Quotes:

" and silver have always won out over fiat currency (a fancy term for money that is not backed by something tangible like gold or silver)." - Michael Maloney (Guide to Investing In Gold & Silver, pg.xx)

Reads like a Nostradamus prophecy which unfortunately may well turn out to be true. And how catastrophic it would be for all of us.

While the metals may be the hottest ticket yet, unfortunately not everyone can really afford it. As one reviewer has mentioned, Maloney makes it sound so easy when it's not.

This is the gripe that I have with writers like Maloney. They make a complex topic like gold and silver investment so fascinatingly simple that when a simpleton like me wants to really get into it

While the final third does for the reader what the title portends, the first two-thirds provide a broad range of monetary history. So fascinating, I read this book twice. I'm not kidding.

11/14/09 Update:
I've now read this book three times.

Excellent book on why it's important to be investing in gold and's slightly outdated (2008) and it kinda' makes you jealous if you weren't heavily invested in precious metals prior to the housing bubble burst. That said, if Maloney is right (and I believe his economics are very sound), then the long-term outlook for gold and silver is very bullish...even if it were to tumble by $100 tomorrow. Oh yeah, and gold and silver are just very good for financial security too. This book has de ...more

Książka przeczytana po polsku.

Mam duży problem z jednoznacznym ocenieniem tej książki. Z jednej strony mamy kilka genialnych pierwszych rozdziałów, w których w sposób dobitny i jednoznaczny opisano egh ... kontrowersje związane z obecnym systemem finansowym. Czytelnik dostaje krótki wstęp do nowoczesnej mikroekonomii - pozbawiony jednak nadmiernego formalizmu charakterystycznego dla środowiska naukowego. Później jest jednak zdecydowanie gorzej. Odbiorca książki jest notorycznie straszony nadchod

Great overview of the history of monetary history and how/why to invest in precious metals. There was also plenty of discussions about the nuts and bolts of investing in precious metals, e.g. what to buy, how to buy, what not to buy, where to store them, etc. Highly recommend to anybody interested in diversifying into metals.

Kind of a mixed review on this book. I thought it did a great job making a case for investing in gold and silver, discussing the history of money/currency and the two precious metals. However, I thought this book lacked a bit on being a "guide". Several times the author references a website when discussing things like coin shops and web brokers but goes into great detail on the history of the gold standard. While I think understanding gold and silver history and such, for an investor more time n ...more

An eye opener. Contains ideas that will rattle your mind and change the way you think about silver. Gold is always regarded as THE go-to safe-haven, but this book will make sure you know why silver is just as good of an investment.

Easy to read but wrong in some important details. The trend (higher prices) is sound and should pay off in the next 5 years.

Through reading this book, one can gain an excellent understanding of the history of real money and fiat currency. As valuable as the explanation and information is, I feel the book failed to be a "guide to investing."

This was an amazing group which went beyond its title of just investing in gold and silver, the deep explanation and helping the reader understand why was more refreshing than the how. And a real economic eye opener of whats going on with the US and oversees goverments...kinda scary, but a real eye opener for the REAL investor of today, really enjoyed this, to the point yet rich in content, and it goes as one of my all time fav's...great stuff mr maloney :)

Of course! Knowledge is power . After reading that book I am thinking deeply to put my savings away from the hands of bad boys " government & greedy big businessmen " by selling gold and silver when the crisis hit "inflation , deflation or even hyper inflation " you will be able to purchase real estate and stocks as cheap as dust "Transformation of wealth " . Because nowadays there are a lot of real estate and share and the stocks which is over valued .
A fascinating read on the history of money, how governments debased it, and the consequences thereof. The conclusion of the book (as you may guess from the title) is that there's another round of consequences coming soon, and that you can protect yourself from it by investing in gold and silver. Worth a close read and careful consideration if (like me) you don't think that the governments of the world can solve the current financial mess.
If you are concerned about the consequences of a government spending money it doesn't have; borrowing money it can't pay back; and printing money to cover its malfeasance, Michael Maloney has much to teach you. As the value of the dollar declines, and the price of gold and silver rises, investment strategies need to be re-examined and adjusted to deal with new realities.

I thought this book was well-written, clear, and interesting. It gave me good information on how to invest in gold and silver, and why it is so important. The knowledge from books about this subject could mean the difference between surviving the coming economic storm or sinking.

Great little read, very interesting & well laid out with an informative background into gold & silver as money & a commodity. Even being British I found this still rather useful to understand how America & the rest of the world can effect their value over time.

This is both an horror story and an eye opener. Our federal government is printing money at will with nothing backing it. This book goes into great detail about the impact of our national debt, how we got there, and how it will never sustain itself.

This book should be called "The World History Of Financial Crises" or something. Michael Maloney does a phenomenal job of tracking fiat currency cycles (and crashes) throughout the last 2500 years. Incredible and eye-opening.
