Für Cody steht das zweite Jahr an der Vlad Dracul High an. Er hofft auf ein entspanntes Jahr, doch daraus wird nichts, denn ausgerechnet seine verhasste Cousine Turk geht dieses Jahr ebenfalls auf die Schule. Dort macht sie sich direkt am ersten Tag bei den beliebtesten Schülern unbeliebt, was auch auf Cody abfärbt.

Dabei stößt er auch auf die Geschichte von dem Ort Crossfield, der mehr oder weniger zu New Sodom gehört, jedoch ein Tabuthema unter den Jentis (Vampire) ist. Schuld daran sind schlimme Mordfälle, die vor mehreren Jahrzehnten stattgefunden haben.
Doch Cody und Turk lässt der Ort nicht mehr los und sie wollen dort ein Kulturzentrum eröffnen - mit ungeahnten Folgen.

Douglas Rees konnte mich auch mit dem zweiten Band der "Highschool der Vampire"-Reihe überzeugen. Der Folgeband knüpft direkt an den ersten Band an und ich konnte mich wieder sehr schnell an die Charaktere gewöhnen. Cody ist nach wie vor mein Liebling, aber auch seine eher eigenwillige Cousine Turk konnte mich gut von sich überzeugen.

Beide sind absolut grundsätzlich. Cody liebt seine Freunde, Turk ist lieber die Einzelgängerin, die sich nur schwer auf Menschen einlassen kann und will. Sie hat vor den Jentis nicht sonderlich viel Respekt und nennt sie Vampire, was für diese eine Beleidigung ist. Auch sonst nimmt Turk kaum Rücksicht, schafft es aber dennoch, dass man sie ins Herz schließt. So verhilft sie Cody dabei, selbständiger zu werden und bringt ihm das Autofahren bei.

Erzählt wird die Geschichte aus der Ich-Perspektive von Cody. Sie liest sich flüssig mit einer saloppen Jugendsprache und macht einfach Spaß. Vor allem die Darstellung der Vampire, bzw. Jenti gefällt mir in dieser Reihe sehr gut. Hier werden Vampire mal nicht als blutdurstige und übernatürlich schöne Wesen dargestellt, was mehr als erfrischend ist.

Die Handlung rund um Crossfield war interessant und erschreckend zugleich. Die Beschreibungen und die Taten in der Vergangenheit haben mich ein wenig an die Judenverfolgung - in diesem Fall Vampirverfolgung - erinnert. Ob dieser Vergleich vom Autor gewollt war oder nicht, steht in den Sternen. Allerdings ist die Umsetzung mehr als gelungen. Daumen hoch für diese Idee!
Eine weitere Idee, die mich begeistert hat, war die Geschichte mit dem Tagebuch. Zwar waren die Einträge eine Spur zu lang für meinen Geschmack, aber dennoch interessant und ich konnte gut nachvollziehen, wieso ein Bruch unter den Jentis entstanden ist.

Die Covergestaltung ist recht simpel und bietet ein kräftiges Dunkelrot. Zwar ist dies nicht unbedingt ein Eyecatcher, aber dennoch passend, denn diese Geschichte hat ein überladenes Cover absolut nicht nötig.

Insgesamt konnte mich auch der zweite Band der "Highschool der Vampire"-Reihe überzeugen und ich bin auf viele weitere Abenteuer rund um Cody, Turk, Justin und den anderen gespannt. Empfehlenswert! (less)

Cody se už v New Sodomu i na škole Vlada Drakuly docela zabydlel. Našel si přátele a pár nepřátel, ale hlavně se dal dohromady s jentiovskou princeznou Ileanou. Jenže svět se mu opět pořádně pohne v základech v okamžiku, kdy se k nim přistěhuje jeho o rok starší sestřenice Turquoise.

Nejen že z jejich půdy vytvoří svůj vlastní malý umělecký koutek, ve škole si znepřátelí, koho jen může, ale teď jí do oka padla opuštěná továrna v Crossfieldu. Má v plánu z ní udělat umělecké centrum. To se nelíbí jentiům, ani gadjům. Crossfield je totiž dosti bolavé místo v jejich společné historii.

Nejspíš jsem se přes své jediovské, promiňte… tedy jentiovské, období přenesla a i na označení gadje jsem si přivykla, protože mě v textu tentokrát nijak nerušili. A já si tak mohla nerušeně užívat téhle fajn upírské oddychovky. Mírný šok nastal až ve chvíli, kdy jsem si znovu přečetla anotaci, jelikož došlo mírně k mýlce. Turk je holka, ne kluk. Ale kdo by se tomu pomatení divil, když se ve skutečnosti jmenuje Rachel. Já tedy ne.

Překvapilo mě, jak lehce a dobře se mi upírské pokračování četlo. Kniha mi i celkově přišla méně naivní a hloupoučká. Jako by se autor v prvním díle otrkal, seznámil nás s tím podstatným, bez čeho bychom se prostě nemohli hnout dál, a až v tom druhém se pořádně odvázal a prostě si své psaní užíval. Alespoň takový dojem tedy z knihy mám já.

Samotný Cody byl dospělejší a jeho počínání s otravnou, přitom velice osobitou, sestřenicí bylo docela legrační. Myslím, že velký podíl na zlepšení příběhu má právě Turquoise. Zkráceně Turk. Celou svou duší i smýšlením umělkyně, která občasně z úst vypouští zajímavá životní moudra, z nichž by se měl poučit nejeden člověk. Pravda, sem tam jsem stejně jako Cody chtěla, aby zmizela a už nekvákla, ale byla to právě ona, kdo vše tak nějak rozproudil.

Ačkoliv se může místy zdát kniha zbytečně překombinovaná, uspěchaná, mírně nelogická, či až moc fantaskní, autorovo poselství je jasné. Můžou mezi námi být jakékoliv překážky, přesto existuje něco, co by nás mohlo spojit. A tím něčím je láska k umění. Ať už v knihách, v malbách, v sochách, v hudbě a zpěvu. Pokud budeme chtít, pojítko se dá vždycky nalézt.

Druhák více ocení mladší čtenáři a lidé, kteří se rádi odreagují u něčeho jednoduchého, přihlouplého a zajímavého. Osobně se mi velice líbila pasáž s úryvky historie jentiů prostřednictvím deníku. Vždycky jsem měla ráda historii. Knize tak dávám 4 hvězdičky.

This poor book, I had no idea they published a second one, none, I was fixing the Children’s Face out display where I work and that’s when I saw it. I completely fangirled out and bought it (after my shift of course.) I think I tore through it in two days. While, it didn’t have as much mythology as the first one did I still really liked it. In Vampire High: Sophomore Year, Rees has probed further into the hearts and minds of the jenti and this sequel is definitely richer for it. Rees has stepped up the game and told a compelling story that deepens the plight of the jenti. Rees has stepped up the game and told a compelling story that deepens the plight of the jenti. The backstory of Crossfield, the largely abandoned town near New Sodom and its black history are the focal point of Rees’ sequel. Terrible things have happened in Crossfield’s past…to the jenti. And they will never forget it. Whereas in Rees’ debut, you got more tepid high school fare and shenanigans, his sequel is quite different…complete and full of substance.

When we last left Cody he was being marked by Dracula and he and Leanna finally had a meeting of the minds (wink wink). He’d become a hero at school and managed to earn the respect of the faculty and his peers. All in all Rees gave us a happy ending to the yearlong conflict that had plagued gadje and jenti alike. With the polo team in full swing, things were finally going swimmingly at Vlad Dracul Magnet School and the local vamp population. All of this changes when Cody’s troubled cousin Turk arrives.

After finally overcoming the prejudices the jenti had about humans, Cody is once again thrown into the deep end, as his cousin inflames his friends and colleagues at school with her irreverent disregard for the tradition and history of the jenti. By openly pursuing an arts center in one of the abandoned factories in Crossfield, Turk engages all forms of opposition especially resurrecting an ancient rift between the Burgundians and Mercians. But some of the jenti who desire long-term change jump aboard and Cody realizes that his cousin is not so cracked up as he’d assumed.

The overall point that Rees is trying to make is that through art and music, the differences between people can find common ground. The art center could be a place where gadje and jenti can bridge the chasm of prejudice. Turk serves as a catalyst for Cody, a more fully realized self that can accomplish great things through perseverance and teamwork. One of the things that Rees makes so appealing in his sequel is that he presents real issues in a paranormal setting that go beyond the shallow contrivances that are so common in this genre. I really found Vampire High: Sophomore Year charming, engaging and a satisfying read. This book is great for middle grade readers, difficult readers and those beyond.

Při jedné ze svých četných toulek po okolí objeví Turk starou tovární čtvrť Crossfield. Cody se pak s Turk, umělkyní až do morku kostí, rozhodne vybudovat v jedné z opuštěných továren umělecké centrum. To se ovšem znelíbí části jentiovského obyvatelstva, která začne jakékoli snahy o vybudování centra mařit. Crossfield totiž za dlouhých válek jentiů s gadji, normálními lidmi, sloužil jako popraviště a hřbitov nepohodlných jentiů.

Ve druhém ročníku se setkáváme se starými známými. Cody se stal po svém odhalení pravé podstaty jentiů hrdinou školy i města New Sodom, má lásku své přítelkyně, jentiovské princezny Ileany, a přátelství jentiovského spolužáka Justina. Svěžím vánkem – ne, spíš vichrem – se stává Turk, nezkrotná, nezastavitelná, sebevědomá umělkyně jdoucí vždy proti proudu, která se svým entuziasmem a střízlivým pohledem na svět stává v tomto díle nejsympatičtější postavou.

Přítomnost Turk je jen zběžně a ne moc uvěřitelně vysvětlena, ale dává příležitost k novým zápletkám. Vzhledem k její bezprostřednosti a faktu, že si z mocných aristokratických jentiů vůbec nic nedělá, dojde k několika šarvátkám a výměnám názorů mezi ní a především Gregorem, jentiovským vévodou. Tyto scény baví a Turk tak čtenář může jen fandit.

Skrze deník dávné obyvatelky města se více dozvíme o historii New Sodomu a chápeme Codyho pohnutky, proč Turk podporuje v jejích snahách vybudovat centrum, na druhou stranu mi parta kolem centra připomínala jednání dětí ze Správné pětky z pera Enid Blytonové. Děti si usmyslely, že půjdou na nebezpečné a zakázané místo, a bez úcty k historii a navzdory přání většiny dospělých si tam udělají, co chtějí. Ani jednání „dospělých“ mi nepřišlo moc logické. Vést válku kvůli vystavění uměleckého centra mi přišlo přehnané, stejně jako další praktiky odpůrců Codyho a Turčiných snah.

Závěrečné kapitoly, jejichž děj mi přišel až příliš překombinovaný, ovšem předávají čtenářům autorovo poselství: umění a hudba dokáže mezi lidmi, přáteli i nepřáteli, smazat i ty největší rozdílnosti. Že umělecké centrum je místo, které může pomoct jentiům i gadjeům, odpůrcům i přívržencům, překlenout propast předsudků vůči tomu druhému. A že vytrvalost a týmová práce růže přináší.

Navzdory několika logickým nesrovnalostem a občasnému přehnanému, až nerealistickému jednání některých postav nabízí román s ponurou obálkou zábavný příběh o přátelství a snaze udělat svět o něco lepším. Stejně jako první díl doporučuji Druhák čtenářům spíše ve věku 12-15 let.(less)

Vampire High was a pretty good book, but not good enough to reallyy stand out from all the other vampire books out there. I received an advance reader's copy from winning a contest and just got around to reading it.
Cody is a great main character; he's funny, sweet, a nice guy, and as is very evident in this book, and I'm guessing in the previous one, he is extremely determined to do what he believes is right, and he never ever gives up, no matter how many obstacles are in the way. I also reall...more

I remember reading Vampire High by Douglas Rees when it was released in 2003 (!). Mind, this was before anyone had ever heard of Twilight. I simply adored Vampire High, as it was funny but also very real, with great characters and a fun story. Now, seven years later, we have a sequel to a book that was obviously not written with sequels in mind.

It's sophomore year for Cody Elliot at New Sodom's prestigious Vlad Dracul High School, and things seem to be going well. He managed to lead the school's water polo team to victory, acquire a girlfriend in the form of a jenti (vampire) princess, and maintain a C average. Not bad for a lowly gadje!

In the satiric and funny sequel to the witty Vampire High, Cody's hopes for a great sophomore year at Vlad Dracul are dashed when his train wreck of a cousin, Turk Stone, moves in and messes with his life.

Turk's a brilliant teen artist and goth with a sky-high ego . Her attitude infuriates the vampire (jenti) students, especially the dark, brooding Gregor. But something FIC Rees 334376

Hmm... I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first. I'm a lot older now than when I read the first Vampire High, which has something to do with it, but another part of this is that the major characters from Vampire High took a dramatic backseat to new characters. I did like Turk a lot when she and Cody had their bonding moment, though.

Different type of style then I usually read but its a pretty good story line.

I have to say I didn't like that he introduced someone new but quickly got attached. I LOVE these two books. What a great tale. So clever. Not dissing the beginning of the book, I just wasn't prepared for a 'new' person. But I love love love both of these books.

This was a fun read. It flowed well, read fast, and the characters were likable and fun, even Cody's cousin Tuck who I thought I would dislike turned out to be a fun likable person.

Don't expect anything deep except for the concept of learning about people and accepting them for who they are and not what you think they should be, but then this was a theme that ran through the last book as well.

If you enjoy the vampire books, then this is one to pick up and read for the fun of reading. Be entertai...more

I it this book was alsome. I loved the fact that the hole shcool was vampires . The only thing that was were was when the main charater said that his girlfriend was feeding on his blood.It was pretty cool that he was part human and still part vampire.

Every bit as good as the first book, if with more depth and a more mature tone. I love Cody who perseveres in spite of everyone's doubts. With each accomplishment, he gains more and more respect of both the jenti and the gadje communities in these books. I really hope Mr. Rees at least goes through senior year with Mr. Elliott!

Not as good as the first, but still enjoyable. The beginning is pretty hard to plod through, but the payoff is pretty decent. I'll probably read the next one.
