This was my first "demon" book. I've stayed away from them for a while, but dash it all, this just sounded too good. I'm glad I finally caved.

The Good: Eden. I loved her! She was tough, empathetic and knew enough to be terrified shitless when the situation called for it. She didn't think she could take on the world (a character flaw that bugs me in most paranormal romance and urban fantasy) and was actively trying to get help when she needed it. The Good: Eden. I loved her! She was tough, empathetic and knew enough to be terrified shitless when the situation called for it. She didn't think she could take on the world (a character flaw that bugs me in most paranormal romance and urban fantasy) and was actively trying to get help when she needed it. She even knew when the help she was looking for was wrong and busted her biscuits to get away from said help. Also, you have to love a gal who is so socially awkward around a guy she's attracted to and can still keep up an inner snark dialogue.

More Good: Darrak *fans face* I totally see how he used to be what he used to be. His sarcasm and not-quite-careless flirting was a great break from the uber-alpha paranormal heroes. He was a bad boy (extremely bad) who honestly did want to do the right thing and was trying his damnedest (har har) to make those right (to him) decisions when the chips were down. He wasn't all sunshine and flowers, which is a very good thing, and he was definitely a selfish ass at times. Flawed and trying to turn his "life" around. Just how I love my heroes.

The Bad: I actually can't think of anything right now that was Bad about the story. Yay!

Anyway. I was thrilled that the focus of the book was really Eden and Darrak figuring out how to "live with each other" and their growing relationship. There were action-y subplots and whatnot that gave it a nice break and kept the story from flagging too much.

All in all, a fun, fast read that made me immediately download the second book on my ereader and pre-order the third book.

21 May 2012 EDIT: I re-read this book a few days ago when I was scrolling through my ereader, looking for something to read, and found books two and three. I didn't notice The Mediocre this time, so my enjoyment went up even more. (less)

Pretty decent book. Third person POV. Bad demon becomes good demon. Good person unknowingly becomes black witch via sex. Yeah, that's different. LOL.
Protagonist is very relatable, quirky and funny. I like her.
Love the part about a Goonies poster!
Author didn't say how to get rid of the demon since the one person who could is now dead. Hm. . .

The ending was a nice surprise. Her father is a what? ;o)

I like this one. Curious to read the next.

I have not known Michelle Rowen until I have encountered the Dark Kiss (Nightwatchers series). I have craved for her writings ever since then. She has not yet failed me once of delivering such good novels. She has the ability to entertain her audience with great deal of romance, laughter, and supernatural factoids. She is very effective on transporting you from the real world to the LaLa Land. ;-)

The Demon in Me has a very original plot, but I find the characters were not very complex or deep. Basic scheme of the story: Eden Riley is a [sceptic] psychic who is convinced to help find a killer in a police investigation. To say she has a crush on him is putting it mildly. When they enter a serial killers home to uncover clues, Eden finds herself face to face with the killer. After Ben shoots the killer, Eden is overcome with black smoke that only she can see and quickly finds out that it was a cursed Demon that has now taken up residence in her body.

Eden is the only one that can hear Darrak since he is literally living inside her body. After centuries of not being able to communicate with his hosts, Darrak is excited to finally have someone who can help him break a Black Witches curse that condemned this archdemon to his current predicament. Since Eden is part psychic, Darrak can also take human form outside of her body during the daylight hours.

The author did not disappoint with the fun and witty dialogue with this series. Darrak was sexy, funny and oh so bad but in a good way. You couldn't help but feel the same way Eden does toward the demon. She goes through shock, disbelief and eventually trust and love with the demon.

With a fun plot, sexy demon and a psychic who is as skeptical as a non believer can be, this book will take you on a roller coaster of laughter, suspense and all out fun. Darrak is a demon who could posses me anytime and take up permanent residence in my body! A well done beginning novel to a series that is sure to be a hit and one I look forward to reading the rest of!(less)

Eden was a very likeable character, even though she is not as all powerful and kick ass as so many others heroines. Throughout the story however, she kind of changes her mind relatively often whether Darrak was good or bad.
Darrak is everything you could wish for as a male lead character, sexy, mysterious with a good sense of humor. I especially enjoyed the scenes between him and Eden´s PI partner.
The bad guys in the book - a secret order of are believable and well written.

Combined with supporting characters such as the shapeshifting, home invading cat and a hot-headed cop, Michelle Rowen creates a very entertaining ensemble who definetly have chemestry.

Story
I liked how Eden´s struggle with her possesion was described. It seems that the author has given this part of the story a lot of thought. It really felt like a learning process for Darrak and Eden, who are both testing their boundaries and find that they have to set certain rules. The story moved forward while still taking the time to properly introduce the main characters and their motivations. The almost comical interaction between Darrak and Eden´s PI partner was really refreshing and made me smile.
The romance was very well written and not too rushed, with both sweet and tender, very, very sexy moments and an interesting twist at the very end.
The end however felt, at leat to me, a little rushed. I don´t want to give away any spoilers, but the actions of one certain person, which changed rather fast and drastically.

Worldbuilding
"The Demon in Me" is one of several books including demons as leads/love interests
I´ve read in the last few months (such as The Morgan Kinsley Series, Mark of the Demon, Working for the Devil). Even though Michelle Rowen choses a few already known concepts (which is however inevitable if you write such a story), she still succedes to add her very own take on the whole "possesed by a demon" story. By adding a few of the usual suspects of the paramormal world (weres, witches and shapeshifters just to name few), she creates a believable and interesting world.

Overall
"The Demon in Me" is a charming and fun debut, that kept me very well entertained. Michelle Rowen knows how to to keep her readers hooked and really looking forward to the next book. Another series I´ll definetly keep on reading!

Okay, I think I'm alright. This just shows you how great Michelle Rowen is as an author. She really makes you love the characters as if they were your own friends or neighbors. I have almost never felt loss over a character in the books that I've read until now. I truly loved Selina and got involved in her character and backstory. I hope she shows up again by some miraculous method but even if she doesn't I enjoyed having her around while I could.

Now on to the rest of the review.

Eden Riley, I adore her. She kind of reminded me of October Daye from the series of the same name by Seanan McGuire. She is kind-hearted and cares for others but almost always gets dragged into a problem against her will and out of nowhere. However, she deals with what she is facing and reacts in a human way. She isn't all powerful nor is she able to only rely on herself. She is just the right mix of able to deal with what is going on around her while also trying not to explode from all the hysteria. I felt that I could really relate. A lot of the laughs in the book came from Eden.

Now for the male lead, Darrak. I liked how he kept wavering back and forth between seemingly good to maybe he isn't so good. Rowen wrote this character beautifully. She gave him faults, showed he did do bad things and regretted it, and that even now Eden can't trust him completely despite her love for him. This is realistic because in life nothing is black and white, it's all shades of grey (and no I don't make reference to that book series -shudders-). Darrak reminded me of Angel from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series and Darrak too could very well likely go back to being evil for a short while in future books. I look forward to this character's development.

Leanna is fantastic. Leave it to Ms. Rowen to make all the side characters just as enjoyable as the main ones. At first I thought she was just a cat but then she shows herself to be a shapeshifter and I really liked the dynamic that built up between her and Eden. I can't wait to see her future interactions with both Eden and Darrak. SHE MAKES A MEAN LASAGNA AND DON'T YOU PEOPLE FORGET IT!

Selina...I really hope she comes back somehow :(

Oh and Rosa, the old lady, was the biggest WTF moment in the book. I will never look at elderly ladies with canes the same way again. They could be psycho sorceress wannabes controlling archdemons! YIKES! Oh, but I did want to smack her son Malcolm sometimes. Even after he came to his senses and realized his mother was crazy I didn't like him so much. I am amazed Eden could forgive him.

Anyways, great story, great characters, wonderful writing. LOVE YOU MICHELLE ROWEN!(less)

Characters:

Eden Riley is a woman whose had a few hard knocks in her life and is just trying to make ends meet. She doesn't have a lot of confidence in herself or her abilities, but as the book progresses, she starts to develop a strength of character that is very admirable.

Darrak is a demon that appears to be quite friendly and helpful. He's had to possess numerous bodies over the centuries in order to survive and has slowly developed human qualities that he would have scorned in his former existence.

World-Building:

The world that Eden lives in seems normal enough. But after being possess by a demon, she comes to realize that there's a whole lot more to her world than she ever realized. As the story progresses, she begins to learn more and more about what's really out there. And it slowly occurs to her that demons may not be the most dangerous thing she has to worry about.

Overall Impression:

This was a really enjoyable book to read. It was more of a relaxing read for me and I absolutely loved the interactions between Eden and Darrak, especially when he was inside her head. Made for some very humorous situations! There were some steamy moments between the two of them but those moments were expertly woven into the story and never felt forced or unrealistic. It would have been awesome to have seen into Darrak's head and what he was thinking at times, as he really is an intriguing character (not to mention a complete hottie). So, for anyone looking for an adult paranormal romance read, check this book out...it's definitely escape-worthy!

I've been a little burned out on vampires lately and went searching high and low for a good demon romance, because I thought that might be unique and interesting. this book has its funny moments, but most of the time the book is spent filling us with surprises. Ben and Eden are starting to go out(and i think they r n da next book too), Darrak starts to get jealous and possisive of Eden.(theres a funny part when ben's about to kiss Eden, but Darrak controls her body and slaps Ben-ben was definately surprised....

later on they find the witch selina who turned darrak into what he is now, and she agreed later on to change him back, but of course malcolm and ben(hes our of the picture now, lets just say he saw something he wasnt suppose to see), and malcolm's mom interrupted and malcolm's mom ended up killing selina...now darraks only way to befree of the curse is ruined.....or is it:?????
In the end of the book Rosa(malcolms mother) is killed, and ben has joined the club that are for people that gop against demons. and he knows that Eden's father is an angel, and thats why eden's life is so close to magic.

My feelings toward this book are all mixed up. While reading it I just couldn't put it down, I had this itch to keep reading and reading but once I finish it I never felt like it was the best book ever or anything similar. It was a great read though, original and catching, I really liked it. I think it has a lot of potential to become an amazing series but it has also the potential to become one very, very lame. One can only hope next book is better and not one which will ruin everything.

fun.sexy.engaging. Those are just a few words I could use to descibe The Demon In Me. This is the first book in the Living In Eden series by Ms Rowen. Eden Riley becomes posessed by a demon who just happens to need her help in breaking a curse that keeps him in need of a human "host" body. Darrak is said demon and when in his "human' form is quite a looker which is making it very hard for Eden to have him exorcised from her so she can get on with her life. This is really a case of don't judge a book by its cover. I saw this on the new book shelf and skipped right over it. Saw the sequel (with the same cover practically) and just thought - it looks a bit cheesy. But something made me pick it up and look at the synopsis. Which led to finding the first of the series and testing the waters by reading the first few pages. I was sold.

From establishing bathroom to date rules (Darrak can see EVERYTHING that Eden does) Eden tries to go on as usual. But there are people out there who want Darrak's powers and are willing to sacrifice Eden in order to get them.

In this off the cuff paranormal romance by Michelle Rowen we watch protagonists, Eden and Darrak, deal with their strange new "living" arrangement. Eden's freak outs over the situation are hilarious. Her inter-dialogue is witty and comical with the one liners and zingers abundant.

Eden and Darrak have great chemistry between them that gets hotter and surprisingly sweet as the story goes on. However, the story did seem to drag at times. It was almost as though the book couldn't decide if it wanted to be serious or funny and it made for some awkward reading. I did feel that there were some extra scenes that weren't necessary and were more of a filler.

Eden spends a lot of time flipping back and forth between Darrak being "good" or "bad". As they work to exist with their co-habitation they try to locate and deal with the witch who cursed him. But she isn't anymore willing this go around then before to remove the curse. Throw in some creepy exorcists, a trigger happy cop,and a shape shifting kitty cat and you have a wonderful blend of humor & charm that translates into the start of a fab new series. I look forward to seeing where Ms. Rowen takes Eden and Darrak.

I was really surprised by Michelle Rowen's latest the Demon In Me. I enjoyed her Fanged and Fabulous series as a very light but forgettable read. The Demon in Me was a bit darker, edgier, and yes, still funny, read.

Michelle Rowen has begun an intriguing, new series. It is so hard to figure out what I can share with you without putting in spoilers. It was fairly fast-paced. It contained the humor I have come to expect from her. I have a sneaking suspicion that the heat produced from her scorching scenes may well be found to be a contributing factor of global warming. The twists and turns it led you through as the book reached its conclusion left my mind spinning. At one point, I had to stop reading so I could glance at how much was left. I couldn't see how she was going to be able to finish the story without losing something... yet the ever talented Ms. Rowen pulled it off yet again.

Feelings at the end of the book? A thrill of anticipation to read the next one. A satisfaction that comes from reading an incredibly well written story. That slight emotional drain that comes from being on a roller coaster of emotion. A shocked, "I can't believe that, WHAT?! WTF?!" feeling when the author tucks in all the pieces into a nicely wrapped package then hits the detonator and blows it up in your face. A strong desire to find out her absolute favorite chocolates, find them on the internet, and set up an account to mail them to her on a monthly basis so as to get lots more books. A slight concern that this will be a short series, mixed with hours of wondering how she's going to pull off more. (Clearly, being the AUTHOR and CREATOR of this world, she can do it and probably knows how some things will be resolved, but I'd LOVE to sneak a peek as to how... and the brainstorming that went into THAT!)

In short, I can't really tell you more than you can find out by reading the synopsis without giving away spoilers. With some books, you can hear the spoiler and it doesn't really mess with the reading experience. I absolutely refuse to do it with this book. Nope. No way. Very well written, and it would detract from the experience. At least, I think so. What I CAN do is to tell you that the above are only a FEW of the reasons I will be anticipating, salivating, and counting down the days until October when book 2 will finally be released.

If it was the author's intent to make me really doubt nature the male protagonist (and I suspect it was), she did a good job, perhaps too good. A little more than quarter way through I thought there was a real possibility Darrak could end up being the bad guy even while knowing that it's not Rowen's style and would be atypical for this type of novel. However, it's possible that that would have made for a more intriguing story.

I decided to buy the book after reading a sample on my kindle. Hmm.. a demon possession. Sounds kind of interesting. I think I should've bought a book I really wanted to read for $7.99. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book, but it was JUST OK, and definitely not worth the price.

I don't know who I had a problem with more Eden or Darrack. The uncle was quite funny especially talking to Darrack like he was actually slow. The book just didn't set right with me. I will not be finishing the series....more

All in all I enjoyed this one. Again, it wasn't the deepest novel ever written (Um, yes, there might be a recurring theme in my reading material of late... What of it?? :-), it obviously wasn't meant to be and it was thoroughly enjoyable.

I liked the main characters. I enjoyed the plot and the side characters were also fun. There was some fun humor sprinkled in as well. I'm also looking forward to the next novel (this first novel does end on a bit of a cliffhanger).

Michelle Rowan always confuses me. Not her stories, just my own feelings toward them. I like them. Her characters always appeal to me, and her plotting has a good pace. The problem is, I always feel there is something missing, but can never put my finger on it.
